Where to buy simple summer clothes?

Imfinehowareyou · 24/06/2018 18:56

I need to get new summer clothes and want really simple cotton and jersey items. I'm looking for plain or really simple patterns. So for example, I am picturing plain black loose fabric trousers and plain cotton tunics. Everything seems to be too busy and made in manmade fabrics. Do these clothes exist for a normal high st price? To make it trickier I'm 5ft 1 and pear shaped (and not rich).

Cotton and linen are not cheap fabrics so you just won’t find them in the bargain basement. However, the sales are on. Look at Massimo Dutti, Kin by John Lewis, Arket and Cos. All use natural fabrics. Arket do excellent longer line shirt style tunics. Also try Saltwater if you like their Cornish vibe. M&S have some cheaper linen and it’s fine.

Thank you! Looks like I need to move into the less but better world of clothing!! I like some of the Boden stuff but baulk at the price. I will check out your suggestions.

I know everyone likes to hate M&S but the Chichester one was full of cotton and linen today - loose trousers, cotton chinos, linen shirts and shorts, cotton T-shirts in various colours and styles. Quite a lot of navy, white and khaki in with the watermelon and other bright shades. Also some nice summery accessories. Jigsaw had a lot of cotton or cotton or silk things too.

The best cotton things I've found recently have been at Sainsbury's, of all places.

I also got some Levis denim shorts in the sale.

There’s a great brand called Lucy & Yak. They’re a little pricier than the high street BUT they’re sustainable, beautifully made and last really well and everything else you asked for in your PP.

I try hard to buy things in M&S, but must admit that I looked in there today and couldn't find a single thing that I'd be prepared to wear, apart from a denim midi skirt which I've already got!

Uniqulo is my go-to for plain basics in natural fabrics.

butlerswharf · 24/06/2018 19:44

I'd say for what you're after Uniqlo would be the best option.

BubblesBuddy · 24/06/2018 19:48

I think the MandS cotton chinos are great. Ditto their linen shirts. Try looking on line for greater variety. Some of their stores only stock granny stuff.

Processedpea · 24/06/2018 19:50

yes uniqlo, try their drape pants \link{https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-drape-pants-405203.html?dwvar_405203_color=COL09&dwvar_405203_size=SMB003&cgid=IDpants1492\here} they are 100% rayon but vv comfortable and thin, also come in lots of designs perfect for summer

Processedpea · 24/06/2018 19:51

if you search drape pants on there they come in more designs and colours, if you can get to a store they have loads more

teta · 24/06/2018 20:00

H&M have lots of cotton & linen online. Join the H&M club and you will get 10% off.

The Chichester M&S is really good I nearly always buy something in there. It seems like the collection is edited or something.

Imfinehowareyou · 24/06/2018 21:23

You guys are awesome, thank you so much. I have a lot to look at now. Seriously, this is so helpful. The Uniqlo drape pants are spot on 😃

Yes - the Chichester one is FAR better than the Guildford M&S (my nearest one.)

Kleptronic · 24/06/2018 21:43

Try Mango, they do a lot of cotton. You have to stay alert though.

teta · 25/06/2018 13:38

Oyshu have lots of cotton and linen. I’ve just received a parcel today with a red kaftan dress in cotton and a saffron linen t shirt and they’re both really pretty and very reasonably priced.

Tanaqui · 25/06/2018 17:07

M and s have a linen shirt in a beautiful French navy colour, but it is too boxy for me. The trousers and dresses don’t seem to have the same colour way! Joules is good for cotton if you can see past all the insane prints, so is Crew if you like a preppy vibe.

user1457017537 · 25/06/2018 17:55

I looked at the M&S shirts and thought they were boxy too. I didn’t see the French navy but I find the colours are a bit off, just not nice shades at all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2018 18:51

Agree re the colours in M&S.

Not a fan of linen generally, and find M&S linen especially thick and scratchy.

This looks a lovely shape, if anyone is fond of navy.
