Products for wavy hair and curly girl method

I’ve had My hair cut into a long bob and want to bring out the curl more.
I’ve been reading about the curly girl method on blogs but all the terminology has confused me.
I’m a bit confused about how often I should wash it. It says decrease your wash to every other day but I only do it every 5 or so days now, so that’s an increase?

Also can you name a specific shampoo/ conditioner to use?

Personally, I no longer use shampoo at all and just wash my hair with conditioner. I can't say I follow the curly girl method as such, I found it a bit confusing too, but just doing that one change has made an enormous difference. Pantene conditioner works best for me.

mrsshelby44 · 18/06/2018 07:09

I use L’Oreal extraordinary clay conditioner.
I use Johnson top to toe wash as shampoo when I need to which isn't very often as I just co-wash every other day.

And I use shockwaves mouse the one with the green label as a styling product or Pantene pro-v when I can find it.

If you just use conditioner all the time doesn’t your hair feel greasy?

mrsshelby44 · 18/06/2018 07:17

No I rinse it out throughly and we all different hair types so what works for one night not work for the other. I'm mixed race and have very thick curly, waist long hair. I literally have the hair of about 4 people lol. I find shampoo drys my hair out which is why this no poo method has been great for me.

Strax · 18/06/2018 07:23

Not in the slightest nancy. Shampoo just dries it out and makes it frizzy. Conditioner washes leave it soft and bouncy curls.

nancy75 · 18/06/2018 07:39

I’ve got similar very thick curly dry hair, so do you just wash it as if you are using shampoo but with conditioner?

mrsshelby44 · 18/06/2018 08:07

Yes exactly the same. Just make sure to massage you scalp extra to loosen any build up

nancy75 · 18/06/2018 08:12

Right I’m going to try this. Is it special conditioner? Can I do it with whatever I w got in the bathroom now?

AlbusPercival · 18/06/2018 09:31

Thanks all

Nancy as I understand it it needs to be silicone free conditioner

Are you meant to use some sort of product too?

OP posts:
AlbusPercival · 18/06/2018 11:28

Also how much conditioner do I use? Slather it on, or keep it minimal?

OP posts:
Furrycushion · 18/06/2018 11:31

I slather it on

Furrycushion · 18/06/2018 11:32

Make sure it is silicone free though.

AlbusPercival · 18/06/2018 11:59

The ones I've suggested are all sulphate and silicone free and you can get them from the supermarket.

AlbusPercival · 18/06/2018 16:15

Thanks Mrs I think I have the top to toe wash in the cupboard from when DS was born

If you’re using co-wash only then you should clarify once a month or you’ll get build up.

naichick · 18/06/2018 17:42

Sorry I mean use a clarifying shampoo once a week. FB has a good curly girl support group and I have been using curlbot to check if products are CG friendly.

naichick · 18/06/2018 17:42

Once a month.. argh sorry wasn’t trying to confuse you!

Strax · 18/06/2018 17:44

Do you have any suggestions for clarifying shampoos naichick? I have only used shampoo once in the 8/9 months I've been co-washing and it was straight back to a frizzy mess. I only wash my hair twice a week so wouldn't shampoo once a week but might do once a month or so if it didn't wreck it!

AlbusPercival · 18/06/2018 17:48

Naichick

Do you mean wash with conditioner only, then with clarifying shampoo monthly?

OP posts:
naichick · 18/06/2018 18:08

I just got one today by twisted sista as was ysing the wrong one lol. I actually don’t co wash as my hair is fine and wavy/curly so gets weighed down if I co wash.

naichick · 18/06/2018 18:09

Yeah if you are co washing then use a clarifying shampoo once a montb. Its all a but trial and error actually!

RaspberryBeret34 · 18/06/2018 18:21

I do the curly girl method and love it. You need to use conditioner and styling products with no silicones, waxes or mineral oil if you are not using shampoo. You can wash your hair as often or little as you like.

You can do a modified curly girl where you use no products with silicones, waxes or mineral oils in but you can use sulphate free shampoo. I do full conditioner only.

Conditioners I like are:
Superdrug extracts (all conditioners are CG friendly)
Wilko happy hair (as above, all types OK)
Tresemme botanique coconut or Tresemme Undon (these are the only Tresemme ones that are CG friendly, Undone is being discontinued though)
Yes to Blueberries and Yes to Carrots
Garnier Ultimate Blends white bottle one (rice and oats I think).

To wash with conditioner, you need to use absolutely loads (I use 3 big handfuls to wash), put lots all over your scalp and roots plus through the lengths and really massage and scrub it in. I add a bit more water and scrub again then rinse really well with warm-hot water while scrubbing too. Then I add more conditioner, wide tooth comb or finger comb then rinse that out. I then add a little bit more that I don't rinse, as a leave in. My hair always feels super clean and looks much less greasy than it did before. Also, when using silicones, I could never wear my hair down the second day after washing as it just went into rats tails but now I just wash every few days and wear it down all the time.

Styling products I like are Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly or Pantene curls mousse although at the moment, I just leave in some conditioner and am finding my hair happiest with that. If your hair is crunchy when dry after using gel/mousse, then scrunch out the crunch till it isn't. Oh and use a t-shirt rather than a towel, either plop your hair (wrap up in the t-shirt) or just scrunch some water out with it.

At night, I just put it in a high pony tail or bun with a satin scrunchie and in the morning, I take it out and run a little Boots Botanics hair serum (I love that stuff!) over it to get rid of any frizzy bits and tame it a little.

Sorry - a bit long!!

RaspberryBeret34 · 18/06/2018 18:24

Oh and I haven't used shampoo in over 2 years and no build up at all. Some people do a clarifying rinse with cider vinegar every now and then or do a conditioner wash with lemon juice mixed in (juice of 1 lemon mixed with however much conditioner you'd use to wash).
