Am I brave enough to embrace the grey?

Mid 40s. I've been dying my hair for years and years. First for the condition and shine it gave as well as playing with different colours. Now due to necessity.

The problem is, I'm increasingly allergic to hair dye. It makes me incredibly itchy, unbearably so for several hours after colouring my hair. So I've stopped using several brands and am left with one I think I can still use.

But... it's the age defy stuff and it doesn't really seem to cover the grey. Or if it does, not for long.

I stuck a root cover up on recently and had the same itching, and really didn't like how dark my hair seemed. So I'm going to use the couple of boxes of the age defy stuff as it seems to blend the grey a little without actually covering it.

It's my first step towards going grey properly I think. DH doesn't care and has asked me why I bother dying it for years. My sister will be horrified.

Go and have a look at the grombre page on instagram. It can look fabulous but the transition period is hard.

Do but be prepared for it not to suit you.

I grew mine out over the last couple of years as I got bored with having to dye, build up etc - I have v fast growing hair and it was miserable keeping on top of it.

I am the same age as you and about 30/40% grey. My problem is not the grey but the remaining mousy brown. I love the grey (I have a little mallen streak) but there is no contrast and I have warm skin tone so look washed out.

My recent compromise is a Superdrug colour shampoo used like a hair mask on a Sunday night. Light colour, doesn't cover the grey but warms it all up. Maybe worth a try - it's less than 2 quid a bottle and might be ok from an allergy pov.
