Are sarongs dated?

I'm going on holiday in July, camping in France. The campsite is almost right on the beach so I'm wondering what to wear. I have plenty of swimwear but I'm not hugely body confident at the moment. Do people still wear sarongs? I have some from 20 years ago! Or were they a thing back then but dated now? Thanks.

If I saw someone over 40 in a sarong (assume you are as you have 20 year old sarongs) I would think 'it's a middle aged woman in a middle aged woman outfit'. On a 20 year old, they can look cool if dressed right. If you are trying to go for something more chic and fashionable, what about some light, loose fitting trousers, or a maxi skirt? Throw on a loose button up over the top and tie around the waist.

You very rarely see twenty year olds in sarongs. We spent two weeks in the Caribbean last summer. Huge resort but High end and older crowd. I didnt see one woman in a sarong.

I saw a few older women in maxi dresses they put over their bikinis if going to the bar or restaurant, some in knee length sun dresses, that kind of thing, where they wished to cover up, lots of shorts of varying lengths, but no sarongs whatsoever,,

The op is going camping in France. Nobody will care that she's wearing a sarong, it isn't a fashion parade in which people feel obligated to wear impractical less suitable garments because they're "in".

DragonsAndCakes · 13/06/2018 12:15

If it’s just your bottom half you want to cover, then how about just a skirt?

Tatiebee · 13/06/2018 12:18

I think sarongs look really elegant and can be very flattering if tied properly.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/06/2018 15:08

"For a cover up I cross the ends over my chest and tie behind my neck like a dress."

I do this as well.

That wasn't very nice spanishwife Hmm

qwertyuiopy · 13/06/2018 15:10

spanishwife is a try hard!

spanishwife · 13/06/2018 16:18

qwertyuiopy In what way does my comment make you think I'm a try hard??

I've just re-read that you're camping in France OP - so surely it doesn't matter in the slightest what you are wearing. Nobody will be chic.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/06/2018 18:42

Are people really that bothered about being chic on the beach or by the pool? Really?

hendricksy · 13/06/2018 18:58

I will wear a sarong because I'm hourglass with chunky legs and it shows off my best bits . I have a beach dress but it doesn't show my waist and just my legs so I look twice the size than with a sarong .

Badgoushk · 13/06/2018 22:19

Thanks everyone! I don't massively care about what I look like. It was more curiosity as I haven't noticed sarongs around much. I'm 40 and am happy to dress for my age. But I also want to look nice/respectable!

I realise I just completely contradicted myself there!

OP, I get where you're coming from. It may not be a fashion parade by the pool, but you still want to feel comfortable and not self-conscious.

halfwitpicker · 14/06/2018 12:54

Honestly it'll look great. I wear stuff all the time that's not 'current' or 'on trend' or whatever jargon but I look ah-may-zing!
