Is there any one thing you've done, small or big, cheap or pricey, that has changed your style for the better?

I have a terrible tendency to over-heat in the summer but nevertheless used to spend the summer SWELTERING in long trousers, envious of breezy-looking people in floaty skirts and dresses, because I had such problems de-fuzzing my legs.

Waxing only lasted about a week (followed by 5-6 weeks of bumpy re-growth), shaving caused sore and bright red razor rash no matter how I did it. Hair-removal cream caused rashes and the effect barely lasted.

2 summers ago I saved up and forked out for laser hair removal for my legs.

I have only just twigged the HUGE difference it has made to the way I dress in the warmer months/on holiday. I hadn't really noticed how easily I can pop on a dress these days in the warm weather without having to think days in advance about how to get my legs hair-free and non-rash-covered. It was just never worth even trying to wear a dress, skirt, shorts because I was always either too hairy or too covered in a rash! I cannot tell you (this is probably really obvious to most people tbf) how much COOLER and more comfortable I feel on hot days.

In addition, I'm not that confident about much of my appearance but my legs are actually pretty decent so it's so nice to be able to feel I'm not hiding them away all summer long just because of depilation issues!

Is there any one thing you've done that made such a huge difference to the way you dress?

I've treated myself to some cheapy cotton sundresses these past 2 summers and it's revolutionised my wardrobe, the long too-hot chinos/linen trousers are relegated and haven't been out in a while.

Laser wasn't cheap (though I got a special offer, still it was well over £500 which is more than I spend on ANYTHING in a huge block like that) but it really was worth it and I only wish I'd done it blooming years ago. I'm now 41 and regret all those sweltering summers feeling silly in hot trousers/long skirts when I could have worn a nice pair of shorts like a normal 30 year old!!

  1. Exercising regularly...
  2. Coming up with a basic structure for outfits based on my body shape which is plain, simple top, patterned/print bottom (or a dress!)
  3. La Roche Posay products

Not particularly cheap but i had my eyebrows microbladed and they have transformed my face as I now have shape and definition. I've dropped the BOTOX as I no longer feel the need as my eyebrows frame my face.

And following a batch of over 40 women on Instagram for inspiration. I follow a few european ones for more style ideas as i find most of the UK ones are more about fashion and what's in now, than actually being stylish. I find that very helpful as I often get compliments on how I look but I'm certainly not fashionable.

Wear sunglasses almost always in bright daylight. Slows down the wrinkles developing with squinting.

Finally accepted that green doesn't work on me. Ditto all sludgy colours.

Got my hair cut in the style that best suited my bone structure. I held off for years because my mum has something similar...for a good reason!

Madonnasmum can I ask which European grammers you follow please? I love Audrey Lombard's style, but sadly I'm not a dainty size 6 with a cascade of hair.

margaritabythesea I follow MyFashionable40s, 40NotFrumpy, WelliesAndChampagne and a few others I can't remember? I suit low key + preppy + jeans + tomboy styles. Feminine, flouncy stuff does me no favours at all.

Thanks Confusssed.

starkid snap! I've never had so many compliments since getting a pixie crop. It's made me look and feel fresher. I can highly recommend using a texturing hair powder to give it that slightly ruffled effect.

Lost a load of weight.

It's actually saved me money as I was eating good healthy food but far too much of it, so now my food bill is a good bit smaller (also eat less meat)

I had nice clothes when I was bigger but because of the way clothes are sized up (scaled up or down from a size 10 pattern) they never hung properly, they were always bunching or flapping about.

My clothes fit properly now and it makes a world of difference

Going to see a dermatologist. Yes, her appointments haven’t been cheap, but most of the products she has recommended have been much cheaper than the ones I was using previously, plus they actually work and my skin looks the best it has done in years!

Great thread. Doing project 333 really helped me to get my shit together. Having less choice and having thought through what went together at the beginning of the season made dressing effortless.

Haven’t done it this season as renovating and Christ it shows Grin
