At home permanent hair dye

My hair is naturally fair - dark blonde I'll say. The bottom ends are old blonde highlights and top is brown for a somewhat ombre effect (read: bad hairdresser job!) And want an at home due to make it all a light caramel brown / dark blonde. What brands are decent and won't leave me a weird shade of orange?

Don't do it! If your hair is two different colours now, that at home colour will come out as two different colours! I'd get the bottom highlights cut off and go to a propoer hairdresser for a colour.

When I've coloured over highlights I've used a warm/golden brown colour as ash tones can make it look a bit khaki-toned, and reddish brown will look a bit too bright on the highlighted bits. When I've done it (quite often, even though I'm always advised not to!) I use nice n easy. Gives quite a nice multi-tonal effect IMO.

I would not do it myself at home.
Hair has to be stripped of some of the darker colour before you can successfully get caramel. I am working toward an ash or caramel.

I'm having mine lightened after using same shade of home dye for ages and hair was getting darker and darker like a witch. Apart from the roots which were red colour.

After years of at home colouring I now use a brilliant hairdresser.
It really is worth the money if you can spare it.
I went to a hairdresser to have my hair washed when our bathroom was being refitted.
I ended up with brilliant advice on hair colouring and am now having my overdyed, build up of colour, gradually lightened every 4 weeks.
Picked her by looking at various websites with examples of the work they do.
