Have been invited to Holyrood next month and need a hat and dress. Really struggling to find something appropriate and nice. Something in a light colour but colourful too? Conservative-ish neck and sleeves. Coast and JL are letting me down. Although I love the green colour that's new in to coast. Any suggestions?

As you say, think 'traditional wedding'
Not too short. Covered shoulders.
Dress and jacket would be the norm.
Oh, and shoes you can walk in, ON THE GRASS.
Covered in toes, obviously, but I'm thinking about the heels.

Thanks backforgood. I'm finding a lot of the styles that are in are not appropriate.

I love this coast dress bit not sure about the helpline www.coast-stores.com/p/jean-ombre-dress/1992698

Lots of women will wear hats. My cousin’s wife went to one at Buck. Palace recently and wore one, she was not alone.
Congratulations on the invite, hope you have a lovely tome.

HelenaJustina · 10/06/2018 07:58

time!

EdithWeston · 10/06/2018 08:23

You need comfy shoes, with a heel that'll be OK on grass.

I'd recommend a hat.

What is your budget? And what style of clothes do you like best for smart do's?

My DM went a few years ago and had completely unsuitable shoes on and ended up taking them off. She then obviously stood out and was picked from the crowd to talk to Prince Charles Grin

goose1964 · 10/06/2018 10:32

This with a jacket actually the shoes have a decent heel for walking on grass

I went last year - yes to hat and comfy shoes. there is a lot of standing around being bored quite honestly. Summer dress and smart jacket witll do it.

Walkthroughthefire · 10/06/2018 19:41

Lol scaredofthecity.
Some great suggestions. Thank you. Will bear in mind the shoes. I think a day in actual shops trying on hats is in order.

I went to the one at Buckingham Palace this week. Don’t bother with heels - most women had swapped them for flats by the end. I wore sparkly crocs flip flops as I have a sprained ankle and plantar fasciitis and didn’t stand out. Pretty much anything goes in terms of dresses. I wouldn’t go too short or too low cut, but you certainly don’t need to be as modest as Kate and Meghan. Most women at mine were wearing smaller fascinators. I wore a rather large one and definitely had the biggest one. You are very unlikely to actually interact with any of the Royals. You could easily attend the whole thing without even seeing them to be honest!

FannyFifer · 10/06/2018 19:51

I wear wedges as it's mostly on grass.
Mind your brolly.
