Dry, coarse curly hair - help

spugymonster · 09/06/2018 12:59

I need some product advice please! My hair is so coarse and fly away. Booo. I hate it! I've tried various products but just can't find one that fights all the frizz and keeps the curl in place. It's the front of my hair that's the worst, the back is ok. I don't like wet look products so I guess that narrows things down. Any ideas? Pleeeease! I'll attach a pic, scribble out my ugly mug 😂 I prefer the front a bit wavy as I don't like tight curls either... tough cookie aren't it.

@GardenGeek I have it cut regularly. It's just the texture of my hair....

@GardenGeek ah thanks. I'll ask my hairdresser next time I go. She has wavy hair so that always gives me a bit more confidence 😂 just been looking a microfibre towels/turbans see if that'll make a difference. Do you use zero sulphate shampoos?

Well what a difference! I bought some sulphate free shampoo and conditioner and did a tonne of research yesterday. Used the new shampoo and conditioner. Used a micro fibre towel (just used a tea towel to see if it worked before forking out for a turban🤣🤣🤣) put serum on hair when wet. Didn't rub it with a towel. Diffuser dried more than I normally do and I've got way more curl definition! Feels a bit dry and isn't perfect but much better 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My daughter has similar hair and uses Boots curl creme when it's wet. It's about £2 a tub and lasts ages.

spugymonster · 10/06/2018 14:35

@GardenGeek ok so I've read about t-shirts, what do you do, wrap your hair up in it like you would a towel? Sorry to sound thick!!!

i'm using almond oil on my hair at the moment and it was 16 euro but the best thing I've used in ages. I have a pot of coconut fat at home and was contemplating using that as all of the shop serums seem very gloopy and plasticky.

I got my hair cut in to a graduated bob, chin length and it sort of works with the curlyness. What the other poster was saying about dry cutting is interesting because the hair dresser cut it in to a triangle when it was wet, dried it (I was really panicking) and then when it was dry he cut it in to a shape that works with the curl

spugymonster · 10/06/2018 14:36

@BibiThree does it look wet after she's dried it? I don't like wet look products so I'm always quite minimalistic with what I use. What's her regime!? Interested to hear how all these curly girls get on! X

I use Aphrodite Hair Serum. First bought on holiday to Greece/ Cyprus, but available on line around 6 to 8 euros. If you know anyone going to Greece, see if they will bring one tube back to sample.

BibiThree · 10/06/2018 14:42

No, it doesn't look wet. She smooths a bit of the creme through after washing and combs with a wife toothed comb, then lets it dry naturally. Doesn't go crispy or look wet, just controls the curls, so they don't look frizzy.

BibiThree · 10/06/2018 14:43

*wide toothed comb

It took a bit of trial and error to get the quantity right, but it's super cheap so not a huge waste of money if it's not for you.

spugymonster · 10/06/2018 15:46

@BibiThree I'll give it a go thanks 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I just get nervous as my hair is super thin and fine even though it's curly so if it ended up with a wet look I'd look like a wet poodle I'm sure 😂 will have another go tomorrow at product in wet hair (so alien to me but worked a bit for me today). Need to get out my rut and get this frizzy mess sorted 😂

GardenGeek
How do you find a hairdresser who does a dry cut. Is it something they will advertise?

Definitely look up Curly Girl Method on google. It takes time to see results but your hair will thank you for it ultimately. Try curly girls uk on Facebook too.

spugymonster · 10/06/2018 21:24

@Skinfulnappies46 just been looking at it. Thanks. It's the product on soaking hair that's bemusing me as it's so alien but will give it another go tomorrow! I'm shocked at how much difference sulphate free shampoo and conditioner made with one wash!

InternalGangsta · 11/06/2018 07:34

Watching this with interest as I have a similar problem. Which sulphate free shampoo did you use? I could only find a silicone free one.
