Tell me about selling on Ebay

I have a few dresses ranging from £50 - £70 that I’ve worn once and likely won’t wear again in the foreseeable future

How much of a faff is it to sell on eBay? if you’ve sold dresses of similar bought price, how much have you sold them on for?

Is it reliable for receiving payment, etc? I uploaded something cheap for sale years ago, but nothing came of it and I’m not sure I can be arsed. But these things are gathering dust, taking up space and I wouldn’t mind a little extra holiday money.

Any dos or don’ts welcome Smile

If you want to achieve anything near the purchase price you need to put up for action WITH a reserve price added so it doesn't go for something like .99p or BUT IT NOW (BIN) and leave it up fir30 days.

Thanks @JemmimaJ

Sorry if this is thick, but is a reserve price the minimum I’m willing to sell it for? And with BIN, does it need to be 30 days?

You need to be realistic about what you will get, but I set the start price at the minimum I would accept, and set the time for 7 days. I always post second class signed for so charge 3.95 for that. You will pay a final value fee to ebay (which they will also apply to your postage). Paypal will also take their cut, again on the total cost. Ebay ticks that you will accept offers by default, make sure you untick this or you will be inundated with ridiculous offers, although you can also set it to automatically reject offers under a certain amount. Be honest in your descriptions, upload loads of photos, etc. Post promptly, let buyer know you have done so. I loathe it with a passion, seriously boring but You will be surprised what sells.

Total faff and waste of time nowadays unfortunately; Ebay and Paypal cream off their share (plus a cut of postage Hmm ). Dishonest buyers abound and are automatically sided with by Ebay, i've given up and just donate to charity shops these days.

Agree with Granny- used to be worth it but there are so many scammers now. They’ll buy something, wear it, damage, then claim it came damaged and send it back for a full refund. Even worse, they won’t send it back at all, and as long as they sent you something and have a tracking receipt showing delivery, eBay with refund them.

I put everything on Buy It Now but allow the Best Offer option so I can negotiate with buyers. I sold a lot of Phase Eight dresses last year (original RRP similar to yours), I’d say the average selling price was £25 - £30

I always start auctions on a Thursday evening for 10 days. I don't use a reserve and find staring with a lowish price helps get the interest. I only accept PayPal and have buyer assist that kicks in with no payment after 2 days.

I have sold bits and bobs for years and find it pretty easy minimum faff.

I always start auctions on a weekend evening
Starting price at minimum I’ll accept, no buy it now or offers
Postage second class recorded
Lots of photos
If I was selling a £50 dress I would start at £15-20 depending on brand
