Silkepil/Epilady - Anyone got one?

Do they work for upper and lower leg? I'm a bit of a hairy monster - hairs like barbed wire (attractive eh?)and sick of shaving. Hate waxing so this may be the answer. How quick is regrowth? Does it reeeealy hurt?

I've got an Epilady which I've had for about 20 years. It does work, and it eventually makes your hair grow back finer. I don't use it on my upper legs so I can't comment on that. TBH, I do prefer waxing as it's quicker (if someone else is doing it) but it's quite good all the same. I found that it was quite painful to use at first, but I got used to it, and I don't mind the feeling at all now. Besides, it's nowhere near as painful as childbirth.

the new ones are supposed to be good

am tempted

I remember trying one when they first came out and tbh would rather endure childbirth than risk it again. it hurt!!

It really hurts when you first start, then you go kinda numb. I used to use my Silkepil for the whole leg, some bikini line too, but that was back in the days before babies. It takes bloody ages, sometimes a whole afternoon (I used to take snack breaks). Now I don't have the time, so go get a salon wax. I still use the silkepil for those tufts that appear in between waxes, though, it's very useful for those, especially in the summer.

There again you could get a wax and use the epilator for constant maintenance. I used to do that, a patch of regrowth every day or two, it used keep me hairfree for most of the summer and beyond.

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!

ChiTownLady · 21/05/2007 14:35

I have a new one and use it on underARMS - WHERE i think its very effective - Bikini line is also good - but grit your teeth ( i aksi tend to get more ingrown hairs with this though - compared to waxing) Bizzarely I can't use it to do my legs as I think it hurts too much !

TricityBendix · 21/05/2007 21:14

I was determined to make it work and thought if I can just put up with it, it will get better. After a while I started shaking and my heart was racing. I felt that was the time to give up.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 21/05/2007 21:16

I didn't cry when I got a tattoo but I cried everytime I used my Silkepil!
I used to do it on my legs occasionally when I could face it as it did mean you didn't need to shave for a bit longer. But you get red spots for a few days so all a bit pointless really.

i bought one off qvc. i got home from work one night and decided to have a little play with it while watching tv. i wasnt planning on doing a large amount, just a patch test type of thing. i actually fell off the sofa it hurt that much!!! i havent touched it since!!

AuldAlliance · 21/05/2007 21:29

I've just got a new one and find it quite good, much better than older models. The pain isn't that bad. I don't use it for upper legs, only for lower.
Main risk IMO is ingrowing hairs, you need to exfoliate legs regularly to prevent them.
Can't remember what make mine is, but could stagger to the bathroom to have a look if you are interested

fruittea · 21/05/2007 21:34

Can't remember what one I'v got, but I've got one, and I think it's great. Yes, it hurts a bit, but not as much as childbirth as someone said earlier . First time I used it, I took a couple of nurofen beforehand, but red wine works as well. Once you've got beyond the first minute or so, you get used to it - bit like eyebrow plucking, the first few sting, then you adjust.

When I bought mine they had a money back guarantee - if it hurt more than you could stand, you could send it back within 90 days. I didn't. But you could look out for a similar offer - got mine in Boots.

Could you borrow one to try out? It's not invasive so there's not really a hygeine issue in terms of borrowing.
