Do you have a garment steamer?

I might buy this one as I really want a decent standing steamer - mainly for dresses, jackets and my work wardrobe. I despise ironing.

Just wondering if you have one and if you like it? Which one would you recommend?

Watching with interest...also thinking about getting one.

I have a handheld one, it's great, also hate ironing. You can get more wear out of dry clean only stuff with it. Storing that big one and getting it out would annoy me though. The small one is enough to do a couple of items at a time. It doesn't replace an iron if you want a really crisp look on e.g. a cotton shirt, but I can't be arsed with that.

I got the Tefal handheld one recently, it’s about £50. Takes ages to steam something like a cotton formal shirt but it’s great for delicate materials like silk.

halfwitpicker · 06/06/2018 20:57

Wow, never heard of those.

GreenMeerkat · 06/06/2018 21:21

Yes. I use it instead of ironing as i hate ironing.

rightknockered · 06/06/2018 22:36

I have one, it's still in the box.

lhastingsmua · 06/06/2018 22:54

Thanks everyone!! Sounds promising!

The one I linked earlier is half price (£85) at Argos so I might go for it now.

The Tefal one looks good too - I was leaning towards a standing one because I used to work at Topshop and we had a standing steamer for the House of CB/Mistress Rocks dresses and it was amazing. So I just thought to go for a standing one, but I guess I haven’t really considered the practicality of moving it around once it’s full and where I’d like to store it.

Thanks for all your replies, I definitely want a handheld one now after doing some research! Glad I posted

@Ofthread thanks, would you recommend it?

I have a SteamOne. It's the big standing one, but I have the space, so it's never put away, just stands next to my wardrobe. Handheld has it's benefits but you won't get the same steam pressure, so might not be enough for more challenging fabrics.

DoctorStrange · 07/06/2018 12:27

I've got a £20 handheld one from Amazon - it works really well and is an easier option than ironing.

It's also very good at steaming wallpaper pre-removal, as I found out last week! Grin

Yes, I like mine, haven't had any problems with it and have used it quite a lot over 4 years or so. Have burnt myself a few times a bit on the steam (the body doesn't get hot), but that is just ineptitude!

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 07/06/2018 21:41

I have a steam iron so I just hold that up to clothes that I want to steam rather than press, works a treat.

LighthouseSouth · 08/06/2018 14:52

I didn't realise these were so expensive
has anyone tried one in the £20 bracket please? Thanks.

Ofthread · 08/06/2018 23:52

Haven’t tried but this has good reviews: www.amazon.co.uk/YOLEO-Upgraded-Clothes-Capacity-Portable/dp/B07BXVQGP9/ref=lp_3576383031_1_17?s=kitchen-appliances&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1528498148&sr=1-17

They are all basically the same thing anyway.

blueshoes · 09/06/2018 00:49

It just freshens clothes, but does not clean nor iron. It is neither here nor there, took up a lot of space and in the end, I hardly used my standing steamer. I was relieved when I finally got rid of it

lhastingsmua · 16/06/2018 15:09

Thanks all. I ended up going for a Philips handheld steamer in the end, quite excited for it to arrive.
