Long haul...

Atalune · 03/06/2018 15:43

I’m travelling long haul with DH and kids who will be 7 and 10. I am well travelled and have flown heaps, but it’s been a while!

I was thinking, comfy bra, long like vest, t shirt, cashmere sweater, hareems, Nike’s. Big scarf for comfort, usefulness.

Does this sound ok?

Kids will be in joggers, tops and warm hoodies with a change spare just in case. Nike’s and DD has a little infinity scarf she can bring. Both will have small neck cushions and we will take those Turkish towels as blankets.

DH can dress himself!

Take some warm socks so you can take your shoes off on the plane. Layers are always good, and nothing tight round the middle or light coloured. Big cotton pants are a must imo too.

goose1964 · 03/06/2018 21:01

Not wear but moisturiser and plenty of water.be careful taking your shoes off because feet can swell during flight

Atalune · 03/06/2018 21:46

Can I take water on the flight after security? I sound like such a dumb dumb!

After security yes I think you can.

I second the plenty of water and moisturiser !

CMOTDibbler · 03/06/2018 21:57

Yes, and you can take an empty reusable bottle through security and fill it from one of the water points.

Atalune · 03/06/2018 22:08

Now that is a tip top tip that I can get behind.

Moisturise and no make up, yes!

I normally dress similarly but in workout leggings and soft hoodie rather than harems and cashmere. It sounds fine!

bingohandjob · 03/06/2018 22:32

If late/night flight I'd take comfortable ear plugs and eye mask for everyone - the ones on planes are always rubbish. And something to snack on that's not sugary, you end up eating crap - I'd take nuts/jerky.

BusterGonad · 03/06/2018 22:35

Take your own head phones too and maybe a foot spray, just in case!

Longdistance · 03/06/2018 22:39

Gah! Never take your shoes off on a plane. Your feet expand, so it’ll be difficult to get your feet back into your shoes.

No make up.

Drink plenty of water.

Relaxed clothing, which you’ve listed above, but not sure about your Nike’s if you’re going to take your shoes off.

EdWinchester · 03/06/2018 22:43

I am flying long(ish) haul in 2 weeks (9 hours).

I usually wear skinny jeans and a vest top with another slouchy top over it. I am always frozen on planes, but make use of the blankets and socks.

I have, however, just bought some Harem trousers from Hush, and may wear them instead.

I go against advice and wear makeup, barely move and drink copious alcohol.

Atalune · 03/06/2018 22:51

I’d love to drink copiously and and sleep, but alas parenting gets in the way. 🙄

Stretchy shoes are top of my list.... I had the worst experience flying to New York and taking my boots off to put thick socks on. Couldn't get the bloody things on when we landed and we were nearly the last off the plane and the last in the immigration queue, much to DHs disgust............

BusterGonad · 05/06/2018 16:53

Oh I love drinking copious amounts of alcohol on flights too! 🍷 🍺

IrmaFayLear · 05/06/2018 17:03

skinny jeans, EdWinchester ?! I would say these are the very worst garment you can wear.

I once made the mistake of wearing jeans on a long-haul flight and didn't realise that one swells up everywhere . My knees were agony and I had to undo them.

I wouldn't wear a cashmere top, either, unless one is in First Class. Imagine the crap that's all over those seats. The first thing I do when I arrive on holiday is make sure that I wash everyone's clothes they've been wearing on the plane, or if no washing facilities, they go straight into a dirty laundry bag. The smell of plane on clothes is rank.

Bluebats · 05/06/2018 17:09

I have never had any inch of my body swell on a plane.

Still would never wear skinny jeans though. They’d be so uncomfortable!

Next do some great comfortable trousers, they’re like joggers around the top so elasticated with strings but fitted nicely around the leg and a material that looks much smarter than a jogger.

I’ve been desperately trying to find a comfy jumper that isn’t cashmere or that awful cotton style that sports jumpers often come in. Just really soft. So I’ll be watching the thread with interest.

EdWinchester · 05/06/2018 17:34

I don’t tend to swell up on planes.

Only once, flying to Delhi, did my feet swell and turn into big fat sausages. That was 20 years ago and it’s never happened since.

My skinny jeans are v comfortable and more importantly for me, warm. As I said, I’m always frozen on planes.

purestpetal · 05/06/2018 19:39

Don’t take nuts!
Very worst thing - there could be fellow passengers with allergies.
Anaphylactic even!

Chanelprincess · 05/06/2018 23:23

Gentle face wipes, mini deodorant, 70% alcohol hand sanitizer, cashmere socks and throw. I usually have some travel sized Neom products with me too to help me relax. Definitely no alcohol and lots of water and all over intense moisturiser for a few days before the flight.

Atalune · 06/06/2018 07:08

Oooh I like the idea of little travel sized neom. products, I’ll have a hunt

Mosaic123 · 06/06/2018 09:23

I think hoodies are not comfortable. You are leaning back on too much material.

KatharinaRosalie · 06/06/2018 14:11

I always take a spare set of clothes for myself as well. Flight socks or runin compression calf sleeves really help against feet swelling up.

ShotsFired · 06/06/2018 14:18

I wear clean and tidy on board, then have something to change into to sleep in - leggings, soft socks and bra and long sleeves. Often also take a large scarf (one of those fake pashmina things).

Also clean knickers to change back into along with my first outfit when we are almost there.

(But I only fly long haul where I get a lie flat bed so I actually sleep. In the days when I was in economy, I wore stretchy and soft and just powered through to my very final destination before having a shower - changing is pointless then)

Atalune · 06/06/2018 17:03

shorsfired oh to have a flat bed......😌
