Frizzy grey hair - short or longer??

Over the past 15 years my hair has gone from chestnut brown, silky and lovely, to a grey, wiry frizzy mess. I struggle to make it look smart for work (I'm partially disabled so it is challenging to do much to it).

If it was cut short, would it be easier to maintain, or would it just be a short frizzy mess?

Thanks for any perspectives!

I have short grey hair. Used to be dark brown. Some good styling products and a decent modern short hairstyle shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Have a Google of short, funky hairstyles that should give you some nice ideas.

Possibly. I found with short hair that I needed it trimming every 4 weeks or so, otherwise it looked shapeless. But, it was easy in terms of wash, comb and leave to dry 😊

I have just had mine cut short, after having a bob for years.
Wow what a difference, I used to spend lots of time and money getting rid of the frizzy mess, in the end my hair was so damaged that I decided to get it cut short.
Now its just wash and go (with a little styling wax in )

OP. I really couldn't say what would happen if you had it cut short. To be honest I've thought of doing the same with my hair, but am too cowardly incase it doesn't look right.

Y'see, I'm in a similar situation to you with my hair, except that I colour mine as I'm loathe to go grey. Mine used to be almost black in colour, very long, shiny and smooth.
It has also become curly when wet, yet can look wiry when dry. Damn that menopause!! Grin

Anyway, my hair is now shoulder length and layered . When washed I first towel dry it, then dry the parting and fringe with the hairdryer.
I then add some Argan oil by Hair Xpertise from Superdrug, to the ends, before then adding some conditioning creme on top. I then leave it to dry naturally as I've found my hairdryer just dries it out even more now.
When combed with a wide tooth comb, it becomes soft and springy at the ends.

I find this easy to maintain. Wash it twice a week. Have a cut about 3 times a year. Inbetween, I cut and thin out my fringe.

And that's it. It works well for me, regardless of what I'm doing.

I think having silver/white/grey hair is the perfect time for a crop!
Not because it doesn’t look lovely long - but, l think short ( well cut 😉) silver looks so chic!

Silvercatowner · 01/06/2018 16:59

Hmmm thanks. So tempted to cut it all off. I can't be bothered with it.

And yes I agree purest - silver is gorgeous as a colour! It's the texture that isn't so gorgeous!

I am thinking of having mine coloured again - 3 colours blended in, to blend the grey in and the back (which is quite brown underneath).

It is a bit expensive but it adds a more tidy texture and looks less frizzy and more curly.

purestpetal · 01/06/2018 17:08

Maybe ‘go with’ the texture a little.
I have very wavy hair, so prone to frizz... no matter how short l’ve gone - the texture still persists.
I think you could go very short on the sides, and keep the top section longer. You’d be able to style that smoother. I don’t know if it would be tricky for you? A bit of frizz ease ( or similar) works very well
One of my teen sons has an extreme version of the style l’ve mentioned. It is amazingly easy to take care of.
Just don’t make the sides bald GrinWink

And if you could stretch to it - some straightening irons - they would help eliminate the frizz...
Actually, if you could manage that, you’d just need to use it all over the bits that were annoying you...

its not cheap but wella straight or loreal xtenso are a game changer . from frizz to waves. lasts a year if done competently.

Jimwenttothedarklands · 01/06/2018 19:36

I'm not anti long grey hair and think it can look fabulous but when it is frizzy too, it really isn't good. So if you can't tame the frizz, chop it!

specialsubject · 01/06/2018 19:45

...which will give short frizz....

FlatTopVera · 01/06/2018 19:59

Short grey hair all the way! I’m early 50s. Wash, towel dry and add a little putty. Easy and no frizz.

Frizzy grey hair - short or longer??
purestpetal · 01/06/2018 21:20

flat yes, that’s the chic l was referring to! :)
