Newly converted real soap users - what changes have you noticed?

I'm not sure if this is related to using soap instead of shower gel or something else has caused this change but I no longer have hard dead skin on the heels of my feet and dh whose feet have always been a bit of a mess with cracks etc has found the same thing - but he's a bit more cynical about soap being the reason.
So I'm curious soap users - have you noticed the same thing?

Anybody got a good face soap recommendation for those with lots of sebaceous filaments please? Found coal tar soap just seemed to coat my face with residue. Other than that I've been washing my face with liquid hand wash for years Blush.

QueenOlives · 07/06/2018 22:40

Read this, ordered some soap. Been using it since Tuesday. My feet are softer on the heel already ! So odd

I'm converting fast!

KnownUnknowns · 08/06/2018 00:12

Ive been trying to convince dd to use soap rather than shower gel for ages and the soft heels thing really sold it to her.
I’ve also gone back to using gloves for washing up, so my hands only come into contact with detergent when I’m using s public loo, and they feel softer already.

I don't wake up covered in sweat and I feel fresher all day.

daftyburd · 08/06/2018 08:09

I use the Dr Bronners unscented baby soap and it doubles as a makeup brush cleaner. Thinking of trying some of the other fragrances. Citrus could be nice. Keep the baby soap for hands and brushes.

Ifonlyus · 08/06/2018 08:25

I forgot to put deodorant on one day and my armpits did not smell. I was at work without the ability to get some so I kept checking once I realised. But no, no odour.

Now that you mention the feet thing - there is less hard skin but it might be because summer is so late starting, I'm not regularly wearing sandals or barefoot yet.

Ifonlyus · 08/06/2018 08:26

Mind you, I've just felt my elbows, and the skin is softer there too...

SluttyButty · 08/06/2018 08:37

Never tried washing my feet with soap other than when I was a child. I regularly wash my arm pits and under boob with bar soap because shower gel just doesn't clean the sweaty bacteria off and you get that nasty sour yeast smell under your boobs 🤢

I'm off out soon and will be passing a body shop so I'll pop in and have a mooch, I usually use Asda or Aldi's own bars but this gives me an excuse to buy something really lovely smelling Grin

expatinscotland · 08/06/2018 08:40

DS and DH use Imperial Leather. DD and I use Nivea soap.

MrsSchadenfreude · 08/06/2018 09:12

We use Nigerian black soap - it's called Dodu Osun, and smells slightly medicinal.

Givemeabreakt · 08/06/2018 10:51

Love this thread. I swapped from shower gel to soap and definitely feel cleaner. My favourite soap is the lavender little soap company one. The smell is beautiful.

littlepooch · 08/06/2018 12:11

I love this thread! Going to give it another week then treat myself to some special soap.

Any soap dish recommendations? Preferably that can be bought online? X

QueenOlives · 08/06/2018 13:09

I don't actively clean my feet unless they are muddy. They don't really ever smell (I'm lucky I know) and so mine have softened by the effects of the water collects near my feet in the shower.

bonzo77 · 08/06/2018 13:27

I’ve used bar soap always really, due to cost and plastic, and habit. Usually the cheapest plain white stuff, 4 pack for about £1. Unscented is better for me. As kids we always had Pears or Simple. Might treat myself to Pears next time.

Have recently changed to solid shampoo which actually I don’t find much different to normal shampoo (Boots own coconut one, 75p). I’m not that keen on the solid conditioner though, as I think it’s making me itchy.

Soap dishes: I wanted something non breakable that also wouldn’t chip my bath / sink / tiles. Also not keen on wood / bamboo as they go manky. So have got silicone ones from eBay I think, about £1.50 each.

QueenOlives · 08/06/2018 13:31

Do you use a regular conditioner then Bonzo?

bonzo77 · 08/06/2018 14:02

I’m alternating between the solid one and others. Boots tea tree and mint or another which I think is L’Oréal

TheClitterati · 08/06/2018 14:12

I finally finished my Lush Honey shampoo bar and I'm now using a solid shampoo I got from a local soap maker at a fair. It seems to be VERY harsh - I'm not sure I'll be finishing it.

Shame if it doesn't work out as I like the idea of supporting local soap makers. But my hair does feel like straw! Will give it one more go. Maybe I'm not using enough conditioner?

Bugjune · 08/06/2018 14:24

I have some Nesti Dante winging it's way to me thanks to this thread.

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 08/06/2018 17:53

I bought about 3 years supply if soap after the last thread! TK Maxx usually. I got this holder for the shower and it's really goid, even for the big bars.

happypoobum · 08/06/2018 18:45

I use Wrights coal tar as I absolutely love the smell. My skin is quite oily so I don't really have a problem with any drying effects.

I feel so much cleaner and fresher all day, even if I have done a lot of physical work. Today I spent about three/four hours cleaning house from top to bottom and mowing lawns and I don't feel whiffy at all.

It also makes my bathroom smell gorgeous.

QueenOlives · 08/06/2018 22:40

Thanks Bonzo

Those using soap instead of shower gel/ liquid hand soaps etc. Are you also using it on your face ?

MissMarplesKnitting · 08/06/2018 22:51

Interesting sideline.

Me and my bar soap are now besties.

Whilst in France recently I forgot my deodorant (read: entire washbag, mummy packing fail, thank god the makeup was separate).

I bought a cheapo french deodorant, aluminium free, not anti perspirant. It's Les Petit Marseillais (?) and.....I love it. No stinkiness AT ALL. Now I'm not particularly sweaty or suffer from BO normally but I expected to, you know, pong a bit in the humidity. Nothing.

Maybe the French have this thing sussed?!

Sadly, I only bought one bottle and am now perusing french goods websites and contemplating paying well over the iddsfor more of this stuff.

oohyoudevilyou · 08/06/2018 23:02

I'm another Dudu Osun fan, but Cidal isn't bad either and easier to get hold of in places like Home Bargains.

expatinscotland · 08/06/2018 23:08

My mother takes DD to this huge Whole Foods in the US and she buys about 10 bars of soap. I really love her almond one. They spend ages sniffing all the soaps there and choosing what she would like.

We haven't used shower gel in years.

We all use Funky shampoo bars but I still use conditioner in a bottle as haven't found bar conditioners to work so well. Any suggestions?

DD uses the coconut oil pre-shampoo treatment on her hair as she swims often.

slippermaiden · 08/06/2018 23:11

I have used soap for a few months now. We always had it for hand washing but I use it for showers now too, I like Waitrose soaps as they aren't tested on animals, also have a nice lavender one from Tesco's. I feel cleaner when I've used it and no plastic waste at all.
