Need some help with hair! (Bleaching)

So, I've recently been to the hairdressers and had my hair bleached then dyed a dark blonde in an attempt to disguise the rapidly approaching grey.
At first it had some lovely streaks and colours in it and I really liked it. Now, a couple of weeks later, it seems to have kind of blended into almost one colour, there's no streaks any more and the colour looks really dull. Is this normal? I really wasn't expecting this to happen and I'm quite unhappy with it now. Just wondering if I've done something wrong. Before and after photos:

What colour is it naturally? Seems incredibly odd to bleach it then dye it that light brown. The streaks unfortunately don’t look natural at all - sort of atomic kitten circa 2005. I think you should be getting advice from another hairdresser

The curl you’ve given it is gorgeous though!

Thanks for offering your rather rude critique of my hair. Pretty sure I didn't ask for opinions on my choice of colour though.

Has anyone actually had any experience with this problem? Insults like above not necessary. :)

Huh? Isn't comments on your colour exactly what you asked for??

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 31/05/2018 20:58

She was asking if it was normal for the streaks to disappear. I wouldn’t have thought so OP and I’d be really disappointed!

nicnacsaffywac · 31/05/2018 20:59

The hair dye could have faded, some hair doesn't hold dye very well and depending on shampoos used etc could fade out. Was it definitely bleach used? I would have expected blonde streaks to be left if the dye had faded?

fruitcider · 31/05/2018 21:00

Basically the original colour was terribly brassy and it's toned down over time. Your blended pic looks loads better. Yes it is normal for brassy hair to die down.

fruitcider · 31/05/2018 21:01

Also the lighting is completely different in both photos so not a true comparison.

Lemmon3101 · 31/05/2018 21:02

I don't really know where the confusion is coming from - where did I ask for opinions on my choice of colour? I asked why it has gone really dull and practically blended into one??

I'm confused as to how a bleached bit of hair blends into a dark brown bit of hair - you can see the difference after 3 weeks on the pictures. I want advice from people who have had their hair bleached. Not 'I think your colour choice makes you look like atomic kitten'.

Whoa calm down op! Jeez

Processedpea · 31/05/2018 21:04

I like the streaks seems like they put on a dark toner and it's faded maybe get a lighter toner next time but I would go back and seek their opinion

ShatnersBassoon · 31/05/2018 21:05

Which photo is the most recent one? The one that doesn't show your face?

Lemmon3101 · 31/05/2018 21:05

Thanks to those that actually answered - yes it was definitely bleached which is why I'm a little confused.

You are also right on the lighting - here is s picture of me in the same room with the same light on the day I had it done, it might give a better comparison.

When you bleach your hair, you open the cuticles, so applying dye straight away means the colour molecules do not stay on the hair shaft as the cuticles will not close due to the harshness of the bleach, that is why the colour fades. You can keep applying an intense conditioner to help close the cuticles
, but in all honesty, the more more you wash your hair, th3 quicker th3 colour will fade

Lemmon3101 · 31/05/2018 21:33

Thanks Helga55, that would explain why my hairdresser said it would be better not to dye it the same day then I guess, but when it was just bleached it was VERY bright and even she said it was too much. How can I combat that? Could I just buy a normal supermarket hair dye now it's a couple of weeks later or do you think that will make it worse?

You could use a shampoo called 'touch of silver', that would take the brassy/brights tones away. Or you could get a semi permanent colour, li,e a 4-6 wash colour to use once a week. You can use these colours as the colour molecules are larger than permanent colour molecules and more likely to be trapped up the hairs cuticles, therefore encouraging the colour to last for longer

ShirleyPhallus · 31/05/2018 22:34

Hi OP - i didn’t mean to offend, your photos are switched over and it looks like the latter one is first. I also complimented you on the way you’ve curled it so not a totally rude critique!

I honestly think it looks much better afterwards though, much more natural and blended

If you’re sensitive to comments though beware of posting on a forum and asking for them....!!

ShirleyPhallus · 31/05/2018 22:35

.... and actually, I didn’t offer advice on the colour of choice. Saying it was an odd choice to bleach it then dye light brown was a comment on the hairdresser’s choice of method rather than your colour choice!

Lemmon3101 · 31/05/2018 22:49

Thanks very much Helga, I'll give that a go. Funnily enough my hairdresser did actually say semi-permanent colour would be the way to go if I were to dye it again. I'm guessing you have experience in this field!

ShirleyPhallus it's fine, I'm not normally that sensitive I was just a bit taken aback, it came across as a bit of a nasty thing to say and I hadn't asked for opinions on the colour choice. If I had I would have expected replies like yours, it is the internet after all lol. It was actually bleached then dyed a dark blonde colour, not a light brown. My natural hair colour is dark brown so what you see is partly my normal colour and partly dyed - I was after lighter streaks to try and disguise the grey I'm starting to get.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/05/2018 22:55

I think your hair is beautiful :) But you are right, you cant really see the streaks anymore. That would annoy me too.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 02/06/2018 14:22

More than likely to do with the porosity of your hair from the bleaching, it’ll just have absorbed all the other colours. What colour were you before? I ask as I’m a little surprised your hairdresser bleached and then dyed in one sitting, a gradual process may have had better results (not a hairdresser but get my hair done in a salon regularly and we chat about this stuff as I am a bit obsessed with my hair)!
