Hair cut for fine, long hair.

Name changed so I can add a photo.

I'm a bit fed up with my hair. It is pretty fine and I feel always looks scruffy. This is partly because I have no skills whatsoever in styling it and partly I think because the cut is wrong.

It is one length apart from some very long layers which I asked for because I don't like very blunt ends (again, because I don't have the skills or time to straighten/blow dry it properly after every wash to make it sit right) and what used to be a side fringe that I've been growing out.

So, I need a cut that is low maintenance, but not drastically short (I need to tie back for work and don't want a pixie type cut.) I'm not sure I want lots of layers because I've tried that before and they tend to flick out in my hair. I'd like to be able to wear it down and for it to look good! Any ideas?

Bear in mind in the photo I've done nothing with my hair today and just got caught in a heavy rain shower...

Not helpful sorry, but your hair is gorgeous

I love the wavy bits at the end, it looks like youve styled it like that!

Wingbing · 31/05/2018 17:42

You have naturally beautiful hair!

Neednewhair · 31/05/2018 17:50

Thanks, this wasn't meant to be fishing for compliments Blush No, not helpful!

It was just brushed in the photo and looks not too bad but after a short time it's limp and lifeless!

Goodness me that isn't fine hair by any stretch of the imagination! It's lovely.

Neednewhair · 31/05/2018 18:25

Hmm, in the picture it's all pushed forwards onto my shoulders so that's all of it. Nothing falling down my back. I guess that makes it look thicker.

Still, it needs a cut. How should I get it done?

I think you’d suit a lob.

Rainshowers · 31/05/2018 20:09

Following this as mine is similar (although doesn’t look as nice at the ends!) and with post-partum hair loss is looking sorry for itself. Was just saying to DH I need to get a decent cut but I don’t know what to get done!

Neednewhair · 31/05/2018 20:13

@Rainshowers Mine is just coming back a bit after DS. I actually have short fluffy baby hair bits around my hairline Hmm

I like these styles - basically angled lobs, I have similar hair to you & recently got it cut like this. Only thing is it needs 'doing' to a degree, but I'm thinking about getting one of these too:

@luxurybiscuit Is your hair coloured at all? Often wonder whether those styles sort of need the highlights. What do you have to do to style it in the mornings?

Just asked DH if I could pull off those styles or if they are "too cool" for me. His answer, "that type of style needs to be maintained. You'd need to look after it." BlushGrin He knows me so well.

I have fine hair - trust me you do not

luxurybiscuit · 31/05/2018 20:41

My hair is a very similar colour to the first pic - it is coloured (because I am 50% grey in reality, !) but it is coloured my natural colour - no highlights & I tend to just have a root tint and have it worked through at the end so it keeps a lot of the natural tones.

I wash it every other day and use dry shampoo - I've only just had this done so am using my GHDs after upside down blasting it dry, using volumising stuff at the roots & a bit of serum (sounds a lot more high maintenance than it or I am!). I'm hoping the styling brush I mentioned, which is a ceramic base and rotates itself) which the hairdresser used on me in the salon will mean I can style it in about 3 minutes. I previously had hair very similar to you and used XL velcro rollers a lot which gave the impression of lots of volume - might be worth trying that if you aren't quite ready to take the plunge on a lob!

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 31/05/2018 20:50

I second an angled lob. I took the plunge and cut my (very) long hair about this time last year into an angled lob and I don’t regret a thing.

It’s super easy to style and has a lot more volume to it. I find myself curling it a lot more as it’s a 10 minute job as opposed to a 45 minute job when it was long.

Day to day I just pop a bit of mousse in, tip my head upside down and blowdry.

Found a couple of before /after pics

Neednewhair · 31/05/2018 21:06

Thanks for the tips @luxurybiscuit. I do maybe need to be prepared to do a bit more to it!

@NotExactlyHappyToHelp Your hair looks lovely! Is it shaped/shorter around the front at all? Did you tell the hairdresser how angled you wanted it? I like the fact that yours doesn't seem like a huge contrast in length between the front and the back.
When it's not curled, do you have to use straighteners for it to sit right or is a quick blow dry enough?

OP posts:
NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 31/05/2018 21:16

Aw thank you. It’s not shaped at the front apart from I have a long side fringey thing on the one side. I didn’t tell the hairdresser much just showed him a couple of pics but he’s my BIL and a hairdressing god so I trusted him. No straighteners needed day to day, just blowdry and go. I only ever use them if I want it to look really sleek. I do have fairly straight hair naturally though.
