How to shorten gold chain necklace?

Any ideas? I've tried googling "necklace shortener" and all that comes up are clips that can be used to secure pearl chains that you've doubled over. It's a smooth chain where you can't see the individual links in order to thread something through but I wondered if there was some kind of clip which might work?

TIA for any suggestions 😊

Take it to a jewellers and ask for them to shorten it.

They will cut it and re-solder the end piece back on at your chosen length.

Can you tie a knot in it, near the fastening? If you have long hair you'll never see it.

It's actually gold plated @TrollTheRespawnJeremy rather than gold so not sure it's worth the cost of getting it shortened by a jeweller - plus I'd be a bit embarrassed taking it in! 😳

I'm not sure that will shorten it enough @CointreauVersial but thanks for the suggestion 🙂

I did this with a base metal necklace, jeweller did it for free did look at me with pity though

If you tied a knot a bit further along then can you thread something through to then attach to the fastening?

I got a link from a bead shop that cost me 3p Grin - if the links in your chain are big enough to thread it through at the desired point?

Where I live you would only pay a fiver to gave it shortened

I would do that if you like it

purpleandblue · 02/06/2018 08:40

Thanks for the replies 👍🏼 The links are too small for that unfortunately @cardoon
Good idea @DragonsAndCakes
Might be brave and go to a jewellers...what's the worse that can happen?!
