Sorry To Be Dull BUT................What do you think of BROWN CARPET? Good or Bad Idea???

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 07:54

We are moving in a few weeks and have to choose a carpet, the living room walls will be sandy/ creamy colour, the sofa has toffee coloured throws with a mix of brown and cream cushions and we have wooden furniture.

The carpet needs to be used in the lounge, hall/ stairs/ landing and our bedroom (which will have 2 beige walls and 2 choc brown walls)

Brown carpet reminds me of the 70's era (before i was born - but i did grow up early 80's with a brown and orange swirly carpet!) if we put brown carpet down will i regret it? I'm worried it's out of fashion and in a couple of years i will wish i'd had something else.

We can't have cream because it's far too light we have 2 kids and I childmind so needs to be hard waring.

Any thoughts?

My friend inherited a bron carpet and it does look really dark.
Can you not have a wood floor?

It does show up quite a lot as well, the brown carpet

twentypence · 20/05/2007 07:59

Our carpet is sort of brown. Like a donkey really. Through the house - it just looks neutral and nice. We didn't choose it, inherited with the house. Goes with everything.

Are we talking chocolate brown here?

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 08:00

We can't afford wood flooring and its only rented.

It's a fairly light brown not really dark

Lovemygirls - have you thought about candystrip or even a Tartan? Candystrip looks absolutely fantastic when fitted and hides a multitude. Brown carpet does look good it is warm and welcoming. My advice to you would be to paint some of the wall colours onto some paper or card and take it along with you to the carpet shop to see which shade of brown and there are so many looks best. Candystrips and Tartans are very practical with children. Go for the heavest quality you can afford and don't be put off by anything which has a Nylon content as it makes it easier to clean. Strangely Nylon carpet is generally more expensive than wool carpets. Gosh tell me to stop...I could go on for hours

How brown?

We have a beige-ish speckled one that has welcomed vomit, nappy training, etc etc and still looks and smells fine. But I think you'll be unhappy with a purely brown one.

What about a teraccota shade - it would bounce off the light coloured walls and give them a bit of warmth?

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 08:12

very similar to this one

we have sandy/beigey (light donkey !) coloured carpet on the stairs, landing, and 2 bedrooms. It doesnt show bits, cat hair, dog hair and looks clean and presentable after 3 years wear. My mother in law on the other hand, has had a dark chocolate brown carpet in her lounge/dining room, hall, and it shows up everything. She is forever out with the dyson, and it always looks, well, bitty. If you can reconsider to something lighter or perhaps with a fleck or texture to it I think you would be happier.
Gosh carpet advice at 8.12 on a sunday morning - I must get a life!!!
xxxx

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 08:15

I think a dark floor can make a room look smaller. (One of the best things I ever did was rip a brown carpet out of our living room and sand the floors) I'd go for a lighter carpet with a stain guard. We moved into a house with a light carpet, and even red wine wiped off; I presume it must have had some sort of protection on it.

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 08:17

Oh yes will definately be getting a stain treated carpet I wouldn't even consider not doing, we had the one we have now stain treated and its been a god send, everything comes off with either a baby wipe or car upholstry cleaner its fab!

What about the one i linked to? Is that too dark?

OP posts:
YohoAhoy · 20/05/2007 08:53

Just popped on quickly and saw this - we have the same carpet, only in one of the beige/fawn colours (can't remember which!)

It's hard wearing and despite being quite light, has accomodated all sorts of spills

COuld you not go for the one next to the one you linked to if you're worried yours is too dark?

LoveMyGirls · 20/05/2007 08:56

I dont think its too dark, just asking to see what others think.

Didn't know if suddenly all the netural colours were going to be seen as old fashioned?

lovemygirls - I have a brown carpet about that shade in my house - it was here when we moved in. It's definitely a cheaper (though not too cheap) carpet and it is really easy to clean. But the pile makes a difference to me - I hate that it doesn't feel 'homely', more like what you'd get in an office because it's quite a tight loop - I think even a short tuft would be nicer. Anyway, a bit speckled brown/cream and hides dirt well - wall colours it seems to go with are creams, coffees and soft greens.

Having said all that - I wouldn't choose it - when the kids are a bit older we're going to wood doenstairs and a mid-tone warmer colour (don't know what yet) on the stairs and bedrooms.

HUmmmmm I was looking at if it was hard waring I guess looking at it might not be so comfy to sit on, walk on, lie on etc
Might have to re think.

I thought the texture would make it last longer and not to see the dirt but the texture could make it hard to clean, hoover etc

Hilllary · 20/05/2007 09:12

No dont like brown, very depressing and makes a room feel smaller.

(but then thats just my opinion

jezebeltheharlot · 20/05/2007 09:15

you will regret it and I dont like the colour you linked to.

Think terracotta would be nicer and warmer and last longer.

Smurfs · 20/05/2007 10:14

LoveMyGirls - there are some carpets for sale on ebay that 100% wool for similar money...worth a look I think!

MrsBadger · 20/05/2007 16:55

chocolate brown shows bits badly

digestive biscuit is a v good colour

ours is a bit lighter (malted milk / rich tea) and looks fab but does get a bit grubby.
