Which dress for graduation?

It's Winter where I am so I will be wearing tights and sheer long-sleeved Uniqlo heattech underneath.

Which one do I choose?

Is it you graduating, or someone else? If it’s you be aware that you might need to pin the gown to your dress, so the first one might get pulled up. Otherwise go for whichever is the comfiest as there’s a lot of sitting around...

Is there a dress code? My graduation was extremely formal and anything above the knee wouldn’t have been allowed.

MelanieCheeks · 31/05/2018 06:55

Neither of them looks particularly "graduating dress" to me. If you have to wear a gown, can you try something like that over the dresses to see how that would look?

DrowningEveryDay · 31/05/2018 07:00

Above the knee is allowed. Yes we will wear a gown over it so the dress won’t be seen.

I'm not sure I'd choose either for a graduation tbh but I think the one on the left looks a bit less structured and would therefore fit better under a gown.

And congratulations!

Neither (and I work at university graduations). In the first one the glimpse of skin will look strange with your hood and the second to me looks like a party dress.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 31/05/2018 07:22

Also IMO very short dresses under a gown look odd.

GuntyMcGee · 31/05/2018 07:32

I have to agree with previous posters. They both look like party dresses, rather than graduation attire. Plus the flare of both skirts wouldn't sit right under a gown.

Most women I've known who have graduated have worn more office appropriate dresses - knee or below knee pencil style dresses or skirts.

Anything short or revealing looks odd under a graduation gown.

If it’s a standard type UK undergraduate gown, it hangs from your shoulders; you will see the dress underneath.

Imo, neither is appropriate, a graduation ceremony is a formal, professional occasion not a party (that comes afterwards!) so formal, professional attire is appropriate and I don’t think either is formal/professional.

BUT I work at a university and lots of women do wear more what I would consider party/club wear to graduate, so putting those considerations aside, I think the opening at the front of the first will sit oddly under the hood; the top of the second is better but the skirt looks quite “puffy” so might look odd under a less structured, longer gown.

RoseWhiteTips · 31/05/2018 13:24

Neither. They don’t have sufficient gravitas for the occasion.
