If you were going away for 10 days to Greece...

what would you pack?

It's been a good 2 years since we last went away and my summer clothes really had already past their best before dates before then, so i'm starting with nothing.
I've always been one to over pack, but as i'm starting from scratch I don't really have that problem. But I don't know what I should be going out getting.

I've fallen out with the rest of my wardrobe so nothing I can use from there either...

Thank you!

Don't rule out maxis OP, I am 5'2" and (I think) I look good in a maxi dress. The style has to be good, nothing too fussy, but especially if I wear with comfortable wedges it can actually make me look taller. I find them really easy to wear on holidays, I love dresses as there's no faffing about finding 'matching' items and they can be quite cool to wear in the heat too.

goose1964 · 30/05/2018 12:08

I'm probably no use as our Greek holidays are more cultural than pool or beach. I always manage to pack too much of something and not enough of another. I usually take shorts and t-shirt for the sight seeing days. A couple of swimsuits for beach, pool days. A couple of sarongs to cover my legs going to pool etc and to cover my shoulders in monasteries, skirt below knee length for said monasteries. In the evening I usually take a couple of dresses an t-shirts and skirts. And a girt huge hat and prescription sunglasses. I've had the latter since the 80s and they're back in fashion

princessbear80 · 30/05/2018 12:10

@dizzymaybe I like those maxi dresses. How do they fit over a normal bra, do the straps show? I don’t like wearing strapless bras.

CaptainBrickbeard · 30/05/2018 12:13

I’m in Crete for a week in July; I’ll take 3-4 mix and match bikinis and 5-6 sundresses. Sunglasses, sunhat. I’d quite like to get a play suit if I can find one that suits me and maybe a couple of kimono cover-ups. Strappy crocs (they’re waterproof and comfortable but don’t look like crocs!)

DontCallMeCharlotte · 30/05/2018 13:20

Ooh I'm going to Greece in a couple of weeks!

I'm a generously proportioned apple but I'm happy to wear shorts with longer sleeveless tops during the day.

Evening is cropped or linen trousers with floaty tops (of which I have many). Shoes are my downfall, so this year I will only (she says between gritted teeth) take skechers, these for the beach: tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Navy-Lazer-Cut-Mule-Flip-Flops/132841143-Navy?searchTerm=:relevance&searchProduct=&istCompanyId=07cf3c1d-7207-477f-aab0-212732e114dd&istItemId=-xlqtqqrwai&istBid=tztx&mteam=Arg&ch=PPC&med=Shopping&src=Google&acc=S50%20-%20Sainsbury%27s%20-%20Tu%20Clothing&adg=Shopping%20-%20Womens%20-%20Shoes%20and%20Boots%20-%20Medium&kw=132909574132841143&cmp=Shopping%20-%20Womens%20-%20Medium&mt=&_$ja=tsid:[ACCOUNT_ID]|cid:1331482276|agid:52981677266|tid:pla-435848029427|crid:263764687158|nw:g|rnd:7317400121561980415|dvc:c|adp:1o7|mt:|loc:9045864 (sorry about epic link), Birkies and some flat sparkly sandals for the evening.

Make sure you take a lightweight scarf to use as a cover up or even a "towel" in case of an unplanned swim!

Last year I bought a dress from M&S similar to this: www.marksandspencer.com/printed-half-sleeve-swing-dress/p/p60156466?image=SD_01_T42_8729_F4_X_EC_90&color=NAVYMIX&prevPage=plp

It was brilliant as a beach dress as it just didn't crease and dried really quickly. In fact one day we drove all round the island stopping at loads of beaches for a swim. Then ended up going straight out to dinner in a "naice" restaurant and it looked perfectly fine for that.

Have a lovely time!

Off topic but go to a few French pharmacies and the hondos centre.
All great value and have nice Greek and French products.
Frezyderm is popular on s and b but I haven’t tried it yet

Jumping in..does anyone know where you can get slimline linen trousers? My old ones look soooo baggy?!

I agree with others that staple items are good and mix and match up, I took way too much last time I went away!

Fleurchamp · 30/05/2018 13:31

I generally pack for a week and then do washing if self catering or use the hotel laundry service.
Mykonos is quite glam in places so I would probably take something a bit more dressy/ something I could dress up easily.
Syros is sleepy in comparison and you could wear daytime dresses/ shorts for evening.
I took on a recent holiday:
2 pairs of shorts (khaki green & navy)
2 vests/ bandeaus (black & white)
2 t- shirts (white & grey)
1 thin long sleeve t shirt (to wear if chilly/ in the evening) (breton)
1 pair khaki chino trousers
Pjs/ loungewear for in villa
1 jersey dress (black) easy to dress up or down
1 smarter dress (flowery)
1 thin coatigan (black)
2 bikinis
1 swim suit
1 beach cover up
Running kit

I wore boyfriend jeans and a thin long sleeve t shirt to travel in (which was a godsend as the evenings were pretty chilly).

But this was a family villa type holiday with small kids. DH and I made it out for dinner alone twice!

Shoes are always my issue - I took flip flops, saltwaters, NB trainers that I can run in but look ok with jeans/ shorts and a pair of block heeled sandals.

Having seen this all written down it looks like loads but it really wasn’t!!

If orange is your colour then this stunning silk maxi dress is currently on the tk maxx website for a barganous £80 (original £650 down to 260 on retailer’s site)

Included the link to retailer as they have a better description and photos

Redtartanshoes · 03/06/2018 09:51

I usually go away for a week.

6 bikinis. I know but have loads and live them all
2 pairs of shorts for day
Couple of Kaftan cover ups for lunch
3/4 vests
6 dresses. Again I know but it’s really easy then
1 flip flop
1 sandal
Gym stuff.

Easily fits into hand luggage

FreiasBathtub · 03/06/2018 10:11

I started packing according to this guide last year and it has changed my life. Not kidding. I think the key is, if you're not planning on washing clothes, to keep your beach/pre shower clothes completely separate from your post shower evening clothes.

You might want to up the quantities for 10 days, I usually take a bit more than she advises but am a chronic over packer!

Branleuse · 03/06/2018 10:12

I'd take about 5 light dresses and sandals and a few bikinis

AnyFucker · 03/06/2018 10:21

Slim linen trousers can be found in H +M. I bought a black cut off pair this week that look great with sandals.

They also had white, khaki, a beige stripe and blue and white stripe (if you don't mind looking like a butcher)

MinesaPinot · 03/06/2018 11:53

I'm going to Greece for 2 weeks in August. For the last couple of years we've been on cruises and had to take 'proper' clothes so this year it will be nice to relax a bit and go back to a resort we've been several times before.

I am planning on taking:-

3 swimsuits (2 for lazing round the pool and one for my early morning swim)
2 bandeau playsuits
a couple of knee length A-line strappy t-shirt dresses for out and about/strolling to the village during the day
shorts - one pair black, one white
2-4 vest tops to match
White floaty trousers
2/3 floaty tops to match
2 maxis
2 midis/knee length
pair of pool/day flip flops
pair of dressy flat sandals for evening (metallic or jewelled)
plus undies, hat, pool bag and bag for evening

What I usually do is take enough so I have a different evening outfit for the first week, and then rotate for the second. I'm a bit more relaxed during the day as we don't do much other than laze round the pool and have a bit of a stroll down to the village at lunchtime.

I tend to travel in something comfy (dress or leggings/t-shirt combo) with Converse or similar, so that I've got trainer type shoes if I want to go walking. And I always throw on my denim jacket and take a sarong that I can use as a scarf while travelling, just in case the air conditioning on the plane is a bit fierce.

PurpleHazel · 03/06/2018 16:24

On a laid-back Greek island, clothing is fairly low key, esp if there are yachts coming in in the evenings (they tend to wear polos, sweatshirts and shorts)
For two weeks as in villa with washing machine, I take:
a couple of beach dresses
five casual dresses (inc. this year one of the lovely next linen dresses linked upthread)
cotton or linen long trousers and harem pants for the evening to repel mozzies
a couple of long sleeved overshirts for the same reason and to cover up to visit monasteries
Few pretty good to coordinate
A light cardi for travelling/if the winds get up in the evening
Sarong for beach
Three swimsuits including at least one tankini as makes changing at the beach much easier
Comfortable sandals for walking
Flip flops for pool /around house
Wedges for evening
Mostly navy in navy, white, shades of blue so it all goes together and can be swapped around

And most important for most islands and which doesn't seem to have been mentioned, pool shoes for swimming in the sea in case there are sea urchins !!! Very painful if you stand on one.

Anyone found a nice plain blue, turquoise or white sarong as I'm struggling to replace mine?
