Any apples beat the odds?

Just that - would love to know if any apple shapes (skinny arms & legs but all weight goes on tummy - often boobs too) have beat the odds and now enjoy a normal-size tummy? Dare I say, even flat? And HOW?!

Sorry, I have never had a flat tummy, even when 8st, its always stuck out a bit. Now I am older and fatter, size 14 (large) its even worse. Going on holiday soon and dreading it. On the positive side, I have great legs Grin

ElspethFlashman · 29/05/2018 10:08

Nope. I think that ship has sailed. I suspect if you had a personal trainer for a few years you'd do it, but otherwise I imagine I'll always have a pooch.

I just want a small pooch as opposed to a big pooch. You can hide a small pooch with clever separates.

Lottapianos · 29/05/2018 10:09

I had a bit of a lifestyle overhaul a few years ago and my large gut is gone. I certainly don't have a washboard stomach but I'm a bit more hourglass shaped these days. What worked for me was cutting way back on processed sugar, running / gym 3 times a week, drinking more water and walking more

Clearoutre · 29/05/2018 10:14

Yes exactly, not expecting the world but something I could reasonably hide would be such an improvement.

Dizzy, rock those legs and have a great hols!

Thanks, legs and arse are my best feature, if I do say so myselfGrin

VogueVVague · 29/05/2018 11:29

I work out and am very very slim everywhere - but i still have a pooch. Its very small - but its still there.

I’m Apple shaped too. I’m currently following the 16/8 diet plus Kefir ( natural probiotic ) every day that helps with bloating . As does cutting down on alcohol and upping the exercise. It also helps to cut down on carbs but eat high fat foods like oily fish and full fat yoghurt, cheeses and nuts. Essentially try and eat a Mediterranean diet as much as possible. Also artificial sweetners have a funny effect on the body’s metabolism and can cause bloating.
My tummy is going down for the first time in years but I still have loads of weight to lose. I will always have a tendency to be Apple shaped though as post menopause most people become more Apple than pear. But at least I have found a way of controlling it.

Mine went when I did the joe wicks bootcamp, but for me the dedication needed wasn't sustainable forever.

Clearoutre · 30/05/2018 02:04

Well done teta. It’s intimidating reading about how much dedication is needed to keep it up. I often think it would be so nice to take that flipping mid-section fat and spread it evenly everywhere else. Might risk actually being in proportion...

Nope, not an apple, more like a rectangle (big arms, no boobs, nice long legs) but even when I was a size 12 at 5'8" my tummy was still protruding.

Destinysdaughter · 30/05/2018 11:08

I've lost 21lbs and 4 inches from my bloated tum since Jan doing a low carb diet. I honestly think it's the only way for Apple shapes to get rid of the bloat!

Glitteryfrog · 30/05/2018 11:57

Yes... But it was gym four times a week, plus running and eating sensibly.
I got down to 62kg and I'm 5'8 and in the right light you could see abs.

But it wasn't sustainable long term.

teta · 30/05/2018 12:02

Clearoute Thank you. But I have a long way to go yet sadly. I actually find the 16/8 relatively easy. I’m hungrier once I start eating than fasting. I find it easy to skip breakfast and have a late lunch. It’s far harder to eat small amounts for meals as I then feel really hungry. It’s also far easier to eat salads in warm weather. I love goats cheese with beetroot and salmon with Caesar salad dressing.Fresh baby tomatoes with torn up basil and vinaigrette is fantastic. My daughter made a brilliant salad yesterday with Chick Peas, red onion, flat leafy parsley, tomatoes, garlic and vinaigrette. It was stunning and so simple.
But this is style and beauty 😁 so I shall stop talking about food. Can you tell we are real foodies!

Youcantflosstomonkeywrench · 30/05/2018 12:59

I do sometimes, but as soon as I stop being on the case my Buddha belly returns, even when I'm still fairly light. I'm currently back on the case (hen do/wedding/ holiday coming up) so I'm running and eating low carb, high plant based food and cutting refined sugar or sweetener. I also try and do some Pilates each day.

coldcoldstar · 30/05/2018 13:57

Yes, I was put on contraception which did some weird things to my hormones and I suddenly became this perfect, thin hourglass literally in the space of a week.
Sadly I also fainted a lot during that period so had to stop the pill but I remember that time very fondly ;)

MaudlinMews · 30/05/2018 14:11

No not really but I have it under control.

I'm an inverted triangle but carry ALL my weight on my trunk.

I recently had an in-body stat measurement done and all other areas were under fat but my trunk carried it all. so my right arm had 1kg of fat, left arm the same, right leg 2.3kg, left leg the same but my trunk had nearly 9kg of fat and that's with a BMI of 22 and lots of lean muscle. It's just genetics unfortunately. Exercise keeps everything tight and toned (weights and cardio) but due to having high hips, my belly will always stick out a little because that's the way my pelvis sits.

I really watch what I eat now and find that low carb is the way to avoid bloat. It's awful. I'd gladly swap my small bum for a big one if it meant I could have a tiny waist.

Clearoutre · 31/05/2018 03:12

Great salad ideas, luckily I LOVE salmon. It’s clear us apples have to work harder and the minute we stop it’s back to pooch-village.

I’m trying to keep up with the running & small portions in the hope of a normal one some day.

Maudlin the results of your measurements are fascinating to have set out like that, in numbers.

Happened to look at a clothes size guide and it was ‘hilarious’ to see what size I should be according to my waist & hips - about 2 or 3 sizes bigger than I actually wear.

OP posts:
BornInALighthouse · 03/06/2018 10:02

I have achieved it once but I'm not sure I am a true apple shape. Broad shoulders, no waist, small boobs and good legs. I think I'm a rectangle who puts weight on my tummy. I don't actually mind my shape but trying to find clothes that fit and look good is a bit of a nightmare.

Lucked · 03/06/2018 10:26

I am not giving up hope. I was thin until my children in my 30s. I have a long body and in my youth I would put on weight on my back over my hips but now it has spread around my whole middle with a non existent waist. Once my BMI hits around 27 I start to look pregnant. My friend has a similar BMI but is an hourglass and looks so glam whereas I look so lumpy and frumpy.

Currently trying a Mediterranean diet and plan to add in 5:2 which has worked before. I think I will need to get and keep my BMI around 22. Loads to loose.
