Anybody gone grey and then hated it ?

Am in early 50's. Up until last year I was literally covering the emerging greys every few weeks. Having read a couple of threads on here about embracing the grey I decided to start going lighter so had some caramelly highlights put in to disguise the regrowth. Did this a few times and the growing grey kind of merged in quite subtly but unfortunately the process ruined my hair and turned it into the texture of candy floss Grin
Bits started breaking off so I ended up with a wodge of hair a lot shorter than the rest - not a good look !
A few weeks ago I bit the bullet and have had it cut into a pixie. Cut's great but I really feel that the grey massively ages me - I've also noticed that most women with short hair are also grey so I irrationally feel older ! I'm almost at the point of dyeing it to a warmish brown again - got a castings from boots - but really dont want to get into the vicious circle of dyeing again Any advice from people who've persisted with the grey or not would be great !

Yes me! Absolutely hated it, even though I’d tried very hard to convince myself that I would embrace the grey! I just looked so much older and washed out. The relief when I threw on the L’Oréal castings 😀 and I don’t regret it, I’d rather go through the hassle of having to dye it every few weeks.

I knowq exactly what you mean I catch the sight of myself in the mirror abc think who's that Shock

The thing is, it isn’t the grey that wrecked your hair, just the highlights.

I’ve gone silver and my hair has never been in better condition.
I love it. Get loads of compliments on it.

Why don’t you just leave the bleached highlights to grow out and really embrace your silver side?

You’ll need to have a few masques in it to recondition it after the bleach of the highlights, but in a few months you won’t know yourself.

A tip I got from a going silver site is to wear slightly more make up, or a darker shade than normal. And a bright lippy. And bright scarf near your face.

I used a fake tan on my face instead of make up, and it stopped me from looking washed out in the initial growth stages.

Yes me! I went pixie and grew mine out for two years, fed up of white roots and from a feminist perspective I really didn't agree with women having to dye their hair to fit into the social norm. But after two years I looked 55 rather than 45 and in January I went blonde again and couldn't be happier

ImperfectTents · 28/05/2018 11:09

It's a huge mental adjustment. I would much rather have my old hair back but reality is I have grey hair. Experiment with toners and keep the haircut sharp. I generally wear some makeup to give my face colour. I have been tempted to reach for the nice n easy but tbh that isn't a great look and the roots are terrible.

I think you should push through for another few months and see how you feel.

NotMeNoNo · 28/05/2018 13:34

I have a pixie cut but have demi permanent colour which is a bit kinder to the hair. Im only about 25% grey naturally.

Also since having my hair cut short, I've upped the makeup and always wear some interesting stud earrings.

PhyllisWig · 28/05/2018 14:48

Me. Some days I love it - I seem to be developing a Mallen streak on one side which I love. A lot of the time though I think it washes me out.

I have mousy brown hair and salt and pepper grey. I'm probably around 30/40% grey at 43. I am also warm toned and naturally a bit scruffy so sharp sleek hair looks wrong and the grey looks dirty.

Dh says it's not the grey, it's the mousy bits. I think I suit contrast and the contrast between the mouse and the grey isn't enough.

Am considering a few highlights but am nervous about upkeep as I dont have the cash for a 6 week touch up.

thefirstmrsdewinter · 28/05/2018 16:25

Like anything else grey won't suit everyone. Salt and pepper doesn't suit me. It's ageing and washes out my face. Darker hair makes my eyes look bluer and my skin look clearer.

I leave a few hairs out at the hairline and that breaks it up enough so it isn't a solid block of colour, which can be ageing. Also conceals roots a bit better. I expect eventually it will look too dark and I'll have to grasp the nettle but I'm hoping by then I'll have more grey and less salt and pepper iyswim.

It's great that a lot of women feel good about their greys but I wouldn't like one dogma to be replaced by another. Is it better to stop dyeing your hair only to be compelled to apply loads of makeup to stop looking washed out - ?

Mercurial123 · 28/05/2018 16:35

A couple of my friends have gone grey and they look stunning. Their hair was black and now it's grey it's a beautiful steel colour. I am quite jealous.

Myrnafoy · 28/05/2018 18:18

I had loads of lighter highlights put in so as to camouflage age the grey as it grew. I wanted ashy ones but because my hair prob has a slight reddish hue - not ginger but warm brown, they ended up brassy and yellow after a few months and just didn't look right. Ds aged 10 says my hair looked like a tigers fur Shock

I have gone down the hi lights route (allergic to all hair dyes)

I just look washed out. Hair has gone wiry.

As for
A tip I got from a going silver site is to wear slightly more make up, or a darker shade than normal. And a bright lippy. And bright scarf near your face

I have never worn make up and don't own any scarfs.
I don't like anything round my neck.

Just want to buy some hair dye I am not allergic to

QuiteCleanBandit · 28/05/2018 18:32

Oh god
Bright scarves !
Who on earth wants to wear a bright scarf Confused

QuiteCleanBandit · 28/05/2018 18:35

I did -go grey I mean.
I looked like someones granny age 42.
It doesnt suit everyone and despite the lovely grey beauties in pics that are always posted most people just look old and boring

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2018 19:09

I want hair like tiger fur!

CountFosco · 28/05/2018 19:20

I've also noticed that most women with short hair are also grey so I irrationally feel older!

I think that's because the young almost 100% have long hair. I can think of one 20something at work with short hair, she looks stunning, very gamine. There is no-one in their 30s with anything shorter than a bob then a few of us in our 40s (I've only got a few greys - does that help?) and fifties. But in my Mum's generation (70s) there are lots of women with short hair, my Mum has had short hair for the majority of her life.

Loopytiles · 28/05/2018 19:21

It may be the grey/short hair double whammy.

DownAtFraggleRock · 28/05/2018 19:26

I had brown (dyed) hair with a very silver badger stripe when I needed a colour top up, so I bleached mine and toned it silver to grow the grey out.

I'm three months in - it seems to be very grey (used to be dark blonde). Darker in the back - praying the front is silver or I don't think i'm going to like it much Sad

I bloody loved it bleached/silver so if it's hideous I'll reach for the bleach Grin

MargotLovedTom1 · 28/05/2018 19:59

Yep. Spent a year growing it out. It made me look much older than my years, as well as sallow, washed out and knackered. I dyed it back to brown and haven't regretted it for a moment.

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/05/2018 20:44

Unfortunately the Superdrug one

Says
Do not use on bleached, blonde or grey hair.

It also says its hyper allergic

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2018 20:50

What I want to know is ..how do you know how grey you really are if you dye it all the time? I’m 48 and need to dye my hair every 4 weeks with a so called permanent dye. But because of that I don’t know how much grey there really is.. I know the worst bits but not the whole shebang. I started going grey at 21.

woodhill · 28/05/2018 20:52

So true, I'm 50. If I could go to an island and grow it out

ilovecherries · 28/05/2018 21:19

My situation is slightly different in that I'm a full time wig wearer due to alopecia - so no real idea what colour my hair might be, as I was colouring it before my last shed, which was rapid, total and probably permanent. However, at nearly 60 I decided I might be meant to be grey, so bought a silver wig. I do think it quite suits me, but I tend only to wear it if I feel I'm looking a bit 'edgier'. Day to day it makes me feel invisible, and I was convinced that everyone from baristas to bus drivers to travel agents talked to me differently. So unless I'm going for a very specific look, I'm back to wearing shades of red, brown and blonde.
