Are they any good? Worth looking into do you think? Would you recommend any?
Thanks!

I have a boots sensationail kit which is fab.

To be fair I tend to just used gel nail polish now as I like to change the colour all the time, and it’s easier to take off.

Looneytune253 · 27/05/2018 17:56

I got one and it’s no where near as good as salon. Especially the removal, that was an absolute nightmare!!

Inkythemouse · 27/05/2018 18:06

I've got a blue sky one from amazon which I love.
My boss has got one from boots recently which is really clever. The lamp turns itself off when your nails have been under long enough

ICantCopeAnymore · 27/05/2018 18:10

My equipment is just as good as a salon.

I have a Sensationail lamp, primer and topcoat. I buy Gelish polish.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/05/2018 18:34

You’re risking acrylic allergy using gellish under the wrong lamp.

You can’t mix lamps like that. In a salon you’d invalidate your insurance.

This is a bit of a bargain imo

UncomfortableBadger · 28/05/2018 17:48

I bought a Red Carpet Manicure set about 3 years ago and it’s fab - still going strong!

Tend to get up to 2 weeks wear on my hands but up 6 weeks wear on my toes. Good prep is everything and lots of super thin layers help too.

ICantCopeAnymore · 28/05/2018 18:06

It's just a UV curing lamp, same standard as a salon. The brand of polish makes no difference. I've also been using the two together for over five years with absolutely no issues.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/05/2018 20:49

It’s makes a huge difference. Nail coatings will appear dry from 60% cured but your still at risk from acrylic allergy. Only 100% cured is safe to touch.

It’s an unregulated industry and the only ones policing procedures are followed are insurance companies and they’ll only investigate if your sued.

It doesn’t help that some lamps are sold as being suitable for all coatings.

There has been a big rise in acrylic allergy caused by home lamps being used inappropriately. Acrylic allergy would mean you can’t have bone cement used in surgery, so things like hip operations, dental repairs. It also means you won’t be able to wear any nail coating at all because they’re all acrylic based.

My hairdressers gf has gel polish, their not using the right lamp and when she has a spray tan it colours her nails. If it was 100% cured it wouldn’t be able to do that BUT she wants gel polish for £10 and it’s not viable using the correct lamps and prep products.

My lamps £250, I think the gellish lamp is over £300.

ICantCopeAnymore · 28/05/2018 21:21

Odd, my friend who owns a salon has checked the specs on my lamp and said it's fine. I'll have to Google acrylic allergy.

My local salon does a Gelish manicure for £12 so not so bad if I can't use it at home.

lexiewrites · 28/05/2018 21:28

I've bought a bluesky kit from amazon two years ago. I buy the bluesky gel polish from amazon too. I've always found it really good, and it's saved me hundreds as prior to that I got my nails done every two weeks.

BettyPitts · 28/05/2018 21:46

Love my sensationail kit. It's so easy to use and only takes a couple of minutes.

I've got the new one coat one.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/05/2018 21:51

There’s a race to the bottom with prices. Grey market suppliers like amazon and eBay facilitate it, then there’s the out and out fakes.

There’s a shellac colour that I KNOW has been discontinued for about 5 years but you can still buy it on the grey market. I’ve met salon owners who buy off eBay.

Doug Schoon is on Facebook, he writes the nail tech text books that explain the importance of correct protocol when dealing with acrylic monomers.

You need the right photo initiator to interact with the corresponding uv spectrum from the bulb, at the right height and angle for the specified time to be safe.

I’m not being a prig, it’s genuinely unsafe practice. Also I know a lot about allergies. I wasn’t allergic to cows milk for the first 27 years of my life, now I can’t have it any form. That’s how long it took my immune system to decide milk was dangerous and I drank a huge amount of milk until then.

ICantCopeAnymore · 28/05/2018 21:53

I'm with you on allergies. Last year my body decided that wheat and tomatoes are now poisonous.

So I should be OK if I stick to Sensational polishes then?

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/05/2018 21:57

Yes, just don’t get it on skin & always buy from an authorised supplier,

There is rarely an authorised supplier on amazon or eBay.

ICantCopeAnymore · 28/05/2018 22:02

Thanks! I usually get that brand from Boots. I'll scrap my Gelish then!

afishnotabird · 28/05/2018 22:03

The Sensationail starter kit is often down to £35 from £50 in Asda, and their polishes are often reduced too (although they only have about 3 colours)

Howaboutthisone · 29/05/2018 15:38

Interesting posts here, thank you!

It was the blue sky on groupon I was originally looking at then I realised that that deal is for the UV lamp and not the LED one that I've seen really good reviews for.

Hmmm- I'll probably just end up booking into a salon I think.

I’m not sure what’s in blue sky but the removal tells me it isn’t good stuff
