Help! Dress needed for wedding in Spain

LondonGin · 26/05/2018 10:43

Friend is getting married in Spain. In August.
Coastal wedding. It’ll be boiling.
I’m a size 16 (18 really on top) 5’7”. Great kegs. Big tummy.
Like blue & white combos but not dead set on them. I would say I really have a “style” I live in jeans/ roll up chinos and silk/cotton shirts. Joules Harbour tops. I like a few of the Hobbs dresses but nothing is screaming out to me.
I don’t wear heels- want something I can get sandals for. Dress. Nothing too high cut. No halterneck. The dresses I normally go for are going to be ridiculously hot in the sun so I’m a bit lost! Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Legs... not kegs 🙄

Morning or evening wedding? I guess evening in August...

Is the bride Spanish? In my experience Spanish weddings are a bit more formal. More long party dresses in the style you normally find in Coast

VogueVVague · 26/05/2018 11:33

Are the guests actually spanish or is just a british wedding in spain?

In my experience weddings in france/italy/spain tend to be more glam eveningwear style than the british light and frothy look.

margaritasbythesea · 26/05/2018 14:50

I am in Spain and the Spanish do go all out, although it could me a simple dress with great jewellery. Budget? Any good?

I love this spotty wrap dress from Boden, also available in blue and white.

Argeles · 26/05/2018 20:52

I adore this dress:

I also really like this one:

I think both would work well with sandals - gold ones would be beautiful. You could wear some gold coloured jewellery too to dress the dresses up more for the evening.

LondonGin · 26/05/2018 23:58

Yes, bride is Spanish, groom English. It’s definitely going to be a bit more formal. Afternoon/evening wedding.

I went shopping today. I’m not a fan of busy patterns like the ones you posted @Argeles but they did have lots in Phase 8!
There were lots of lovely ones in Coast but they were just v thick fabric. I bought a dress on a whim as there was a sale on. It’s nice, but it doesn’t feel like ‘the one’. It’s not a wrap dress but did actually look lovely on. Love the colours

I have shoulder length wavy brown hair which I’m planning on wearing down. No idea about jewellery. I’m definitely less is more.

Another thing to add to my list if dislikes- asymmetric hems and anything that frills at the bottom...
Budget- up to £200

@margaritas I like the dress/ apart from the sleeve ends 🙈

I love that coast dress!

Whys that not right? Big navy hat and flat sandles you'll look ace

LondonGin · 27/05/2018 00:37

I think it’s because I had set my sights on something else. In a kind of I knew what I wanted but couldn’t find it way. I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on- I didn’t have to convince myself it looked alright! I think I’m just holding on to an idea I can’t find materially!
Maybe I’ll try it on again in the morning...

Argeles · 27/05/2018 01:37

@LondonGin

I love the strap detail on the dress that you bought.

Try it on again in the morning, but put your make up on (if you wear it), and do your hair first to gain a proper sense as to how you’ll feel in the dress.

Something like this that shows your legs and covers your tummy?

Help! Dress needed for wedding in Spain
Grasslands · 27/05/2018 02:30

my sil (Spanish) got married in spain 2 years ago this august...
it was hot, the men wore full tux's (shirt collars so stiff my husband thought they might sever a jugular if they turned their heads) the women...oh my wore the most divine of fabrics, gorgeous jacquards and satin...long formal dresses...
i wore something made of jersey and sadly was very very out of place one of two shorter dresses but again fabrics to die for and petticoats.

Trumpton · 27/05/2018 03:06

THIS is lovely. Much better in real life than in the photo. A friend is thinking of it for a hot wedding but don’t know if it’s glam enough for Spain !

Pictureiswonky · 27/05/2018 07:47

This is the kind of dress I tend to see at many weddings in Spain

Or this kind for short dresses. Also it's acceptable to wear black to a wedding. I don't particularly like it but it's perfectly normal

Have you got a tkmaxx or a prom shop near you also ebay or carboot sales.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 27/05/2018 10:49

I live in Spain and the Spanish wedding 'rule' is long dresses for evening weddings although these days things are getting a little more relaxed.

LockedOutOfMN · 27/05/2018 10:58

We live in Spain.

OP, you need a long, formal dress. Usually people wear block colour rather than patterns. Most of the ones posted here so far are beautiful but too casual for a Spanish wedding.

I would definitely wear your hair up because of the heat.

Hats are not obligatory but one might make you feel cooler.

Fascinators are not worn.

LondonGin · 27/05/2018 12:20

@pictureiswonky ooh I like that! Might have to convince myself on the one shoulder but I will look out for it shopping today. My normal go to colour is navy blue.

@grasslands jacquard is my usual go to fabric. I have beautiful, lined dresses on the knee dresses but they are so heavy and thick!
When I started looking every dress I liked was just so heavy.
There is a large British attendance, and the brides family is v relaxed and have been good and communicating this, so I don’t think it will be tux’s but definitely suits rather than shirts and chinos for the men.

I’ll do my hair and see how I feel in the dress later!
Thanks for all your help so far!!

OP, it may not feel as hot as you think (I don't mean this to sound patronising) and you'll be having so much fun you won't really notice / care. Spanish people tend to hang out in the shade rather than the sun and any indoor parts of the ceremony will be airconditioned, as will your accommodation where you get ready and your taxi to the event. If it's a church wedding, the church will be cool. Also be prepared for the temperature to drop at night-time. And for the celebrations to go on until very late!

Also, not being patronising again, Spanish don't drink as fast as British, in general, at weddings, and they also eat while drinking so you can expect to have water or refreshing soft drinks along with the typical cava (or the cava will be diluted) and plenty of salty tapas which will keep you from feeling excessively hot.

One thing we love to do in Spain is to stand around. I know you've said you'll wear flat shoes, but make sure they're really comfortable ones. Plan as if you're only going to be sitting down in the church and for dinner. There's likely to be a long period outside the church and upon arrival at the reception where you'll be standing up.

You'll have a lovely time. Spanish weddings are great and the people are really friendly.

(Disclaimer: the whole of this post is a massive generalisation based on my own experiences in this country!)

LondonGin · 27/05/2018 14:44

@lockedoutofmn I spent most of my teens living in Italy & France so I’m used to the weather and lifestyle but I get hot and bothered in a dress for a wedding here in the UK, let alone overseas! What you’re saying is entirely how I expect it to be!

Its just I’m not comfortable dressing up, so I think that’s a massive part of it. I’m more a silk shirt and chunky necklace person!
I work on my feet so used to standing up, shoes I’m much better at choosing!!
