Can you be allergic to one shade of foundation?

I have used the Estee Lauder double wear foundation in Pale Almond with no problems at all.

At the airport the other month I got colour matched again, this time to Ivory Beige.

After holiday I had surgery on my jaw which involved a lot of swelling to my face, my face was very sore etc.

I have noticed my face is so pimply, almost more of a rash than acne. I have suffered with my skin but single whiteheads, these are loads of red bumps.

I don't know if it is the foundation which I have only wore maybe 4 times in the last 6 weeks or something to do with the surgery which was 5 weeks ago.

So can you be allergic to one shade of foundation?

You can develop allergies to anything at any time, even if you’ve used it for ages. It’s weird. I’d patch test the foundation behind your ear or on the back of your wrist and see if you react in the same way, then you’ll know whether or not it’s the culprit.

That's a really good idea, I will put some on my wrist. Would it react the same way as my face? I really hope it's not the foundation, it cost me a blinking fortune!

I wouldn't be surprised as I react to purple mascara of the same brand as the brown and black ones I wear.

I am doing a patch test on my arm to see if I can pin point it to the foundation.

I am prone to spots buy this is different..

Your back is the closest likeness to the skin on your face. That's why allergy patch tests are done there. I'd try it there if you can.

Oh good advice thanks I will try and get some on there! Upper back?

Is there anything else you've changed? I had an awful reaction on my face and jawline a couple of weeks ago, spent ages wondering what it was then it twigged - I had used a new hair shampoo, turns out it was that. I've also had a reaction on my neck to out of date perfume. Also worth thinking about detergents/anything used in your laundry, any medication for your jaw etc?

I wouldn't have thought it would be a shade change as that's not a huge jump in shades, but it might be a slightly different formula sold in airports/overseas? I bought doublewear in the USA before and I swear it was different.

On a separate note, PP mentions purple mascara being a problem - this might be because it contains red based dyes and strangely red dyes in both cosmetics and tattoos seem to be the ones that cause the most reactions in people for some reason.

Annoyingly this is usually a process of elimination

Yes upper back. I had been using the same foundation since I got married 15 years ago.

Only now has it made my skin react in the worst way. Turns out I'm allergic to Disodium EDTA which is in most foundations.

Dermatologist who did my patch test said you can develop a reaction to something that never bothered your skin before.

DextroDependant · 25/05/2018 10:55

Actually I am using a new shampoo. I am using an anti dandruff shqmpii that I haven't used before.

Detergents are same as usual.

I couldn't reach my back properly so will get my sister to do it later when she comes round. My arm was fine though.

Leave it on for as long as you can (as in days). But I was like you in thinking it was some of the new products I had tried. Turned out it was the old ones. Obviously my skin had just had enough 😂

DextroDependant · 25/05/2018 20:09

I am trying to remember when I broke out, I have barley worn makeup since my face was so sore.

I had this once with a Jo Malone perfume. And I mean ONCE.

Was going through a tremendously stressful time and I sprayed the thing and came it in hives everywhere it touched (unfortunately I got it on my face). V similar to pic.

When the stress went, the perfume caused no issues.

Don’t know if that’s helpful, or just me rambling...

PinglePongle · 25/05/2018 20:55

Foundation is water based so it is possible that there is a dodgy batch, if you report it to them they will ask for you to send it back and they will test it

DextroDependant · 25/05/2018 21:37

I have had a pretty stressful time. I will leave the foundation off for a week and see of it clears up although I have actually tried that already and stop using the shampoo.

I have actually gone back on the pill too but I don't know what came first the spots or the pill. It's the Dianette one to clear up my hormonal spots.
