Posh wedding - 11 year old

We (whole family) been invited to a pretty smart wedding - village church followed by reception in a ginormous marquee in the grounds of the family seat. The dress code for all guests is "morning suit". Amazingly (!) I'm sorted for myself, apart from still needing to get a hat/headwear of some sort, but I'm struggling with what sort of thing DD should be wearing.

She's 11, tall, but not skinny. Starting to develop boobs and hips but most grownup clothes don't quite work on her shape yet. She tends to wear age 13/14 or 14+ sized clothes from Tesco/Asda/H&M. She lives in hoodies and jeans/shorts normally but isn't averse to dresses as long as they're not "sparkly".

I can't even picture in my head what sort of thing tween/teens might wear for this dress code. Can anyone link to anything that might give me an idea where to pitch the "dressy-ness" level and where to shop - I'm thinking Monsoon but also want to avoid anything that looks too much like a prom dress or bridesmaid dress...

Most of the suggestions above are too babyish, flouncy and frilly and would look a disaster on an 11 year old who is the size of a petite woman. Next are particularly bad at producing clothes that are the same for a 5 year old as a 14 year old. Funnily enough they don't want to wear the same things! Lady Louise looks smart but the outfit makes her look like a middle-aged matron rather than a pretty young girl. The fabric looks too hot and thick for a warm day.

The New Look jumpsuit is the best idea so far.

If she's age 13/14 in clothes then that's a size 8-10 ladies and there will be loads of choice there.

Something like this would be lovely.

I think New Look teen range is very poor quality. The jumpsuit doesn't look suitable to me.
I think the Next dress is age appropriate.
She may be the size of a petite woman but she is an 11 year old child, not even a teenager yet.

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 12:00

Except she doesn't like sparkly or silver or gold and also won't wear open toed shoes either.

Next is a good shout though - I've never looked there for shoes for her. Dunno why, I'm a size 43 so they're one of my go-to places.

I have a feeling we'll be spending some time together on the Next website over the weekend!

I agree, Pinkkahori. That green Next dress with the pink sash was lovely and pitched just right. Not babyish or little girly, but not too old for an 11yo either.

I didn't really take to the Lady Louise outfit either.

Scabbersley · 24/05/2018 12:09

Lady Louise looked awful, poor kid. Frumpy old outfit.

I go to a lot of posh do's and the new look jumpsuit is a bit...meh...

the next dress is just right IMO

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 12:13

I have to say, I don't really like the Next dress - for me its too dark overall for a summer dress and I think the pink line straight down the front just looks odd.

I like the shape and simplicity of the LL dress and I think DD will too. Though a different pattern fabric would be better I agree. Don't like the cardy or the shoes on LL.

when dd was 11 and HAD to wear a dress I bought a really nice simple white and blue striped one from Boden. It was the most inoffensive thing ever.

Yvest · 24/05/2018 12:28

My DD went to a smart wedding the other week and wore a lovely simple short sleeved navy skater dress and white converse shoes. She looked fabulous and totally age appropriate. She wouldn’t have touched the flamingo dress or probably the one with a pink bow. If she has boobs then don’t go for something too young stick to very simple.

These kinds of David Charles dresses are perfect for that age davidcharleschildrenswear.com/shop/special-offers/textured-navy-formal-dress/?attribute_pa_age=10-years&gclid=CjwKCAjwxZnYBRAVEiwANMTRX1d4rBCPYZelnNjiYyZiGUgGO7LZVA1L-8_1H59JILyDY4HfL3yJQBoCit8QAvD_BwE

They’re expensive but look for copies on the high street or on Ebay. They’re lovely with converse or nice trainers and the 11/12 year olds don’t find them too young

GreenthoughtInAGreenShade · 24/05/2018 12:28

I’m an old codger so my taste isn’t necessarily consistent with what an eleven-yr-old would be seen dead in, but i love sketchers for flats that look elegant but fasten with velcro and still allow you to climb trees.

Something like these:

My 14 year old was at my wedding in December and wore a Yumi dress, they sell them in John Lewis, House of Fraser etc. Loads of choice of designs. Got hers in the sale too think it was £18?

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 12:38

I think that David Charles dress is perfect... which knowing my luck means DD will probably hate it! Like the idea of white/blush converse with it too

OP posts:
Scabbersley · 24/05/2018 14:13

Boden do similar. Dd wore hers with silver converse rip offs

mckenzie · 24/05/2018 14:48

I love the David Charles one, and a gorgeous colour too.

DD's dress was very similar but a high street brand and so considerably cheaper which for a single wear I was quite happy with.

Will your DD ever wear it again OP?

gastromum · 24/05/2018 15:37

Dorothy Perkins do a similar style to the David Charles dress and in several colours...

Both can be worn with converse style shoes :)

SenecaFalls · 24/05/2018 15:45

Won't Converse be too casual for this type of wedding?

Carolynnnna · 24/05/2018 15:49

Second vote for Yumi.

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 17:08

Will she wear it again? Yes, definitely, if it’s a dress she likes, whether she’d have another occasion where it was suitable to wear it before outgrowing is a different question...then again I have an unfortunate tendency to save clothes I love “for best” so I’m not the best to advise :-)

My daughter wore patent black dr marten brogues with Capri trousers and an eastern western fusion kameez. Looked great and comfortable. She also has paired converse sneakers with a lace skirt and broderie anglaise blouse

animaginativeusername · 24/05/2018 18:01

pakistani fashion stores as Janan, or brands khaadi have casual and formal clothing, which can be worn with leggings, trousers or as dress alone - are great as they have different styles and fits

makeupmaven · 24/05/2018 19:12

Lady Louise's dress was by Alaia... and it's about £2000! I think it's a nice look to replicate though. Smile

Diamonddealeroncemore · 24/05/2018 19:23

When my non dress wearing daughter had to dress up for a wedding we compromised and she wore flowery DMs with her dress (boots not shoes). She looked quirky and an individual which she certainly was!

goose1964 · 24/05/2018 20:36

I rather like this but I suspect that it might be a threat to get this for her to get her to choose something else

Ha ha, wierd though, from the front that dress is almost exactly what she wore as a bridesmaid a couple of years ago. She loved that dress!

Hoosh · 25/05/2018 11:35

I think smart trainers (simple Vans-type style with a bit more sole than Converse, but not huge and clunky) or DMs with a dress would look cool and quirky and absolutely fine on an 11-year-old.

Absolutely fine on anyone of any age actually Smile

Hoosh · 25/05/2018 11:39

Something like this but possibly a cheaper version - depends on your budget:
