Hair that is neither properly straight or properly curly, just annoying.

What do you do? Is it about having a great haircut or going for a perm? An added problem is age and salt and pepperage, lol.

I would like to know too!

ChangingStates · 23/05/2018 22:43

I have this kind of hair and have a choppy bob to encourage the kink / curl- more of a mussed messy look.

HolyMerlot · 23/05/2018 22:46

I have this problem too!

The curls are much better when abroad so can usually get away with squeezing wet hair and letting it dry naturally.

At home, much to my dismay, I've gotten into the habit of putting some curlier curls (?) in with my straighteners. It used to take me about 40 minutes because my hair is longer than my shoulders and fairly thick but after a few months of practice I can now get it looking good in about 8 minutes - I even impress myself sometimes with the speed! I only wash my hair every 2-3 days too so once it's been curled I can wear the curls that day, sleep on them, and then just give them a brush the next morning and I'm good to go! They stay in really well.

I find curls far easier because they don't necessarily have to be perfect, plus they last 2-3 days, whereas if I straighten my hair I'm lucky if my hair is still satisfyingly straight but the time I drive to work in the damp Welsh air Hmm

I've got this type if hair and recently had a choppy long bob. To style all I do is rub a bit of elnet mousse, twist it into a bun with a barrel clip, leave to dry naturally or blow dry. After a few hours, I have love soft waves with little effort.

WeeMadArthur · 23/05/2018 22:50

I have this, and it’s fine as well. It used to be shoulder length and took 10 minutes to straighten each morning, or 5 mins with a Babyliss Big Hair. Got fed up and had it cut a bit shorter each time I got it cut, it’s a longish pixie cut now. Takes less than a minute to dry and style now and there is no floppage or weird waves appearing midday anymore. Such a relief!

For the salt and pepperage try hair print, an organic none toxic hair colour which restores your hair back to its original colour.

Mine's like this.

Ask your hairdresser to cut it with a razor and a disconnected layer. Mine did and it took out a lot of the weight and made the curls come up so I had volume.

I've recently done some highlights at home and it's really helped to neutralise the first greys I was getting.

Lastly, I've just discovered Creme of Argan leave in conditioner for about £6 a bottle in superdrug. I just smooth it through damp hair every morning and turn upside down with a diffuser in the hairdryer. Takes about 5 minutes. Lovely light, fluffy curls (but then I like mine to be like a lion's mane, maybe not for everyone!)

Thank you so much for replies. Very useful tips there. I'm edging up to a visit to the hairdressers and now I know what to ask for!

Do you use product ? My hair is a frizzy mess without anything . With its amazing ( I know I know but it is ) I do think we are conditioned to think that people in the media wake up with amazing hair but in reality they are faffed with for hours ..

FelicitationsFacilitations · 24/05/2018 12:43

I agree with pigpoglet - product really helps!

Boswellox · 24/05/2018 13:44

Hi pigpoglet, I have bought cheapskate products for frizzy hair, which haven't worked very well, but hesitate to buy the more expensive ones in case they don't work either, lol. Flaminglingos upthread had a minimal hassle sounding routine using Elnet Mousse so I thought I might give that a try.

You need to try a mousse and learn to diffuse your hair properly ( look at you tube for techniques ) it is all trial and error though ..
Have you heard of the curly girl method ? This may work better for you? If I want my hair mega curly I do this and use cantu products .. every few washes I need to use head and shoulders though and it creates a different curl .
I absolutely could not do my hair without any products though . I always get complimented on my hair but I had to learn how to work it ( luckily I guess I did that in my teens )

hammeringinmyhead · 24/05/2018 14:36

I put far curls in with a wand, mostly around the top layer, then run my fingers through (you should never brush dry curly hair). They last for 2-3 days.

MildlyFedUp · 25/05/2018 12:32

I have never been able to achieve good curls with a diffuser, only by scrunching product in when wet and then leaving completely to dry naturally. Going shorter encourages curls, as do layers. Mine is salt and pepper too so I am having highlights in a couple of weeks. Highlights accentuate curls too.

octopusrus · 25/05/2018 22:41

Following!

ScarletBegonia1234 · 25/05/2018 22:43

I had the same. Got much less curly after pregnancy for some reason and just always looked crap. I got a perm! And I LOVE IT!!!

Biologifemini · 26/05/2018 06:37

Google French girl hair
This is the hair lots of people like. Not curly nor straight but messy and cool
Sounds great !!!

Bettyfood · 26/05/2018 06:43

I have this sort of hair but quite like it as it takes curl well and is easy to straighten. I have a long, graduated bob, wash and straighten it twice a week (but it also looks fine if I leave it to dry naturally) and use a bit of dry shampoo sometimes.

FelicitationsFacilitations · 26/05/2018 07:07

Agree betty - i love being so versatile, everything from lions mane curls to straight sleek and groomed with effortlessly messy in between Grin

Boswellox · 27/05/2018 19:20

Thanks to all for the helpful advice. Some time ago I bought a product for "beach hair" that seemed to be basically salted water in a spray. Anyone else find using an old toothbrush to coral frizzy stray hairs useful?
