Possibly posting in the wrong section, not sure. Just feeling a bit weird at the moment. I am 48, still have regular periods. But I feel weird. I am 1 stone overweight, not a massive amount but I am only 5.2" so I feel rather uncomfortable with the way I look. Most of my excess weight is on my thighs. I have pretty much stopped drinking alcohol because it was making me feel awful; I rarely eat processed carbs because they make my tummy bloat like crazy. However, my sugar cravings are beyond ridiculous and despite really wanting to lose weight, I just can't seem to stop myself from bingeing on sweets. Once thing I have noticed lately is that I procrastinate in every aspect of my life. I work full time, I study part time, I have a family (DC are 13 and 10) and a large ish house. I don't have much of a social life so I have quite a lot of time to do things, yet I will easily waste 4 solid hours every day on the internet doing absolutely nothing, but thinking the million chores that need doing in the house, my coursework, spending time with my kids.... I could cook better meals, yet I really can't be bothered. I am really struggling to master the energy to do anything beyond the bare minimum. DH does a massive amount by the way, and DC will do some chores. I just know I could be doing so much more and yet I am struggling to find the mental and physical energy. I have bought so many books recently, and I haven't gone beyond the first chapter in any of them. Can't focus my brain on anything. Exercise-wise, this has always been a struggle, and if I manage the 30day shred 4 times a week then I feel I've done well. I drink a lot of water, at least 2 litres a day. I hate going to the hairdressers, I have put off going to the dentist for 6 years now, I could do with a pedicure but finding somewhere and then actually going is such a hassle, I think I need my hearing tested, I definitely need an adjustment on my reading glasses... It's all just a bit meh. Anyone else feel like this?

mooncup, that menu sounds lush, but if I had that for dinner I'd have heartburn like hell!

The carbs I am talking about are mainly wholegrain, so oats or wholemeal bread etc.

My dad and sisters are the same, we are all slim and sporty but eat quite a lot of carbs. This works for us.

I read recently that some people have a gun that makes them metabolise carbohydrates efficiently, and other people don't have this gen.

Am just saying all this to make the point that not everyone is the same, and different diets suit different people.

Slow release carbs mixed with protein works best for me.

So for me, breakfast of muesli (now called Overnight oats by some people) with fruit and greek yoghurt. Or two slices of wholemeal toast with jam or butter and a boiled egg.

Lunch today was big bowl of rice/veg/lentil salad with feta cheese

Dinner: baked salmon, green beans, asparagus and mashed potato, pudding: fruit salad (mainly pineapple and apple)

Not big on snacking, but had a biscuit with my tea this pm.

carbs rule Wink

Strangely reassuring to read this thread and know I’m not the only one. We could start a club! Except we probably couldn’t be bothered......

I’m on a few FB pages for peri menopausal women. It’s very useful and makes me realise we are all going through it in one way or another.
I’m 44 and had it confirmed by my gp last summer.

Sometimes I feel ok other days I feel pretty rotten.

Maca is helping me with my lack of sex drive caused by VA

Magnesium glycinate helps me sleep and stops my joints aching so much.

SJW and black cohosh help my anxiety/low mood and night sweats.

Maca is a supplement useful to balance hormones.
And SJW is St. John’s wort

Some people do tolerate carbs but the fact we’ve got a massive obesity and diabetes crisis suggests the Calorie In Calorie Out high carb diet (approx 50% of daily intake) isn’t suitable for many people

This lack of energy described on this thread could also possibly be down the the high carb diet most of the UK eat.

It is relatively new this level of carb intake and when you look at how our body deals with such high carbs (e.g. the insulin produced means our body literally won’t burn fat cells and just craves more and more carbs to keep going) it’s hardly surprising everyone is knackered and fat

MagnifyingGlassSearch · 21/05/2018 21:39

Where can I get the carbohydrate metabolising gun? Sounds like the solution to all my problems.Grin

Peanutbuttercups21 · 21/05/2018 21:48

The gun is called CARDIO

Sorry, it requires work to eat carbs....

FreeMantle · 21/05/2018 23:23

I already do low carbs. Fall off the wagon school holidays but trying.

I had put CBA down to too much internet. Every year I'd feel the need to paint a room or two in the house.
I realised this year the idea not even occurred to me.

I feel better for getting out in the garden now that summers here.I wonder if I need more natural light and less screens.

Eolian · 22/05/2018 08:32

I am prone to heartburn and also have no gallbladder (removed due to gallstones). And yet low carb (high fat) largely gets rid of my heartburn.

DustyMaiden · 22/05/2018 08:38

I feel the same, I’m 56 still have periods. B12 has made a considerable difference.

amigababy · 22/05/2018 10:07

I keep wanting to try low carb but I'm veggie, I know it's still doable but so much more restrictive.
When I did eat meat 20 years ago I lost weight on the slimming world red days diet by eating so much more meat and fish, vegetables ( and fruit admittedly) and limited carbs, it worked. I can't bring myself to eat meat and fish now or give up fruit so I never really get going. Dh eats bread and potatoes but he runs and can metabolise anything ( even 4 pints of beer of a night!!) Not fair, he is getting fitter in his 50s but whenever I start exercising I get an illness, or an injury and end up feeling older and more hopeless. I keep trying though.....

ItsalmostSummer · 22/05/2018 11:39

OP, I could have written your posts. Everything people are saying here I can relate to. Ugh! I am feeling so lazy and don’t want to do anything. I CBA either. It’s all too much. I am permanently grumpy and was always hungry.
However I have just started the low carb high fat thing and finally have stopped eating all the time and feeling so sluggish. Eating healthy fats is so filling. Anyway I hope you find a solution. I think LCHF is the way and I am going to incorporate this to a long term plan for myself. That I think is the magic pill - oh go watch that movie of sane ne The Maguc Pill. It’s faacinating.

mrsreynolds · 22/05/2018 16:38

God yes

Yes

To all of it

😣

mooncuplanding · 22/05/2018 16:39

Eolian

I agree that pretty much all digestive stuff clears up very quickly on LCHF

I think there’s a misunderstanding about what LCHF diets are. It seems so counter intuitive to eat fat to lose fat and that fat fuels the body more efficiently than carbs because it goes against the guidelines of low fat high carb diets

I just know it works better than I could ever have believed and isn’t a fad grapefruit type diet and is backed up by massive swathes of research

alwaysthepessimist · 22/05/2018 16:47

Oh this is me too - it has got better since I started HRT though - I am early though 47 now, been on HRT about 9 months, I also take a B12 supplement (max dose one), D3 (again max dose) and a magnesium tablet daily. I also take chlorella - I buy it off Amazon in the tablet form, it seriously helps with the bloating & I do also take herbal water remedies, weight wise it is so damn hard to lose but I am doing the 5:2 now and finds it suits me at this stage of life way, way better than anything else. I rarely drink, it doesn't suit me anymore & I try to avoid carbs but I am sugar dependent, I am trying to wean off slowly but the cravings some days are worse than when I had PMT - I have been told it will get easier but...........I am still waiting.
