Looking expensive in bright colour and print

rightknockered · 19/05/2018 23:04

I can't wear neutral shades and beige, linen or loose clothes without looking like a sack lady.
I need brightly coloured shoes to balance my inverted triangle shape, I need structure otherwise I look like a blob, a skinny stick in baggy clothes.
But now I'm worried that maybe I look cheap and brash.
Any advice on how to wear colour without looking tacky? i can't do all that beige, especially not next to my face.

In my view this depends on skintone for the most part. If you are darker light colours are tricky, deeper tones look better. Case in point amal clooneys outfit yesterday. Although fabric matters. Polyester is more noticeable in darker shades. Also combining with black tends to look cheap. Navy charcoal etc looks more thought out and therefore polished.

I love the groomed/expensive-looking threads. But I fundamentally disagree that you cannot look chic in bright colours. A few things in my experience:

  • avoid cheap fabrics
  • wear a bright block colour with neutral shoes, jacket and bag
  • get your colours done so that you pick shades which suit you (I am an Autumn. So I wear a lot of mustard, rust, teal or peacock, orange etc. All with tan shoes/belt or a navy jacket).
  • make sure things aren't too tight-fitting
  • get a seamstress on everything you wear to make sure it fits properly
  • wear heels you can walk in
  • if the colour is bright, wear discreet jewellery

Having said that, rules are made to be broken! Wear whatever makes you feel good and if that is a polyester, tight, bright pink, cleavage-baring dress with green heels and a big gold bag then do it Smile Life is too goddamn short to do anything else.

I too have to wear bright colour. I'm very pale and neutral colours just make me look washed out.

Personally, I think a lot of comes down to the fabric and design. I avoid cheap looking fabrics. I also try to avoid anything too 'trendy' or with too many details etc. I also hate going over board with accessories. Making sure everything fits properly and shoes kept polished and clean etc all help.

Totally agree with the above. I go for structured clothes in slightly thicker fabrics - anything clingy or tight just looks awful.

Just wear them. I daren't post on those threads as I don't want to start a fight.

I agree, Amal looked standout gorgeous in that yellow dress. I can't wear yellow on my top half unless I wear a brighter colour on my lower half, so usually white. I have an inverted triangle shape to deal with, and can easily look a bit American footballer if not careful.
It's so difficult to find natural fabrics without buying linen in the summer, and I do avoid polyester - doesn't go well with the menopause. Navy is a good colour on me, so that mixed with a bright colour would work. I do wear a lot of black though. What about black with a subtle but bright print? Or white with black? White is the only pale colour I can wear without looking washed out, a very optically bright clear white. So white shoes/trainers work well for me, and recently discovered white bags look better than tan.

What about jewel colours?
So navy with emerald, navy with turquoise, navy and red.
Or of course, fall back -navy with hot pink.

I would trust your instincts. It sounds like you already have a very good idea of what suits you and you certainly know a lot more than some poster who's never even seen you.

Bright courts look better with white than they do with navy or black. If you are going bright I would avoid prints altogether. You ca. Still buyjnenjust buy it in fitted cuts.
