I am going for a treat day into the next town (I am always in my town and rarely go into the next town) with my mother and my cousin, and would like to get my nails done. I do not know which shape I want, but do not want square. I do not know which colour to get. I do know I want a matte finis h. I also would consider an accent nail, but I am not certain.

Just make sure u don't go to one of these Chinese high street places. They use machines to file your nails and dental glue which is not suitable for nails. I've seen some absolute horrors out of these shops with peoples own nails ripped clean off

Google coffin shape nails they're pretty.

Or if you'd like something more natural, try oval shape Smile

If you have some time to throw at it, youtube the channel Nail Career Education on youtube. Its a charming Canadian woman called Suzie and she does loads of different acrylic nail videos. All sorts of shapes, lengths and designs.
It's also really relaxing to watch.

Hi, I'm not sure if you're been by now so this will be no help at all. But if not:
I've had acrylic nails for about 10 years.
I used to always have square shape with permanent French tip, then I was persuaded to try something different. So I started having different colours, nail art, accent nails. I also switched to coffin shape, which I liked. I've now switched again to almond shape, which I like even more (I like the stiletto shape but with a toddler it's not practical). I've never had Matt finish, I might try it one day. I always have mine quite long- about half an inch from the end of my finger. I like them long not short.
It all depends on what you like the most.

The correct terminology is 'non standard salon'

Saying 'those Chinese places' is at best offensive and at worst, racist

As a side point, it tends to be Vietnamese nail technicians we see on our high streets and in the US.

Tippi hedrin helped set up beauty training colleges during the Vietnam war.
