OK I have hit 40 and the last time I bought make up was 8 years ago for my wedding. Hardly ever wear it but want to start wearing a bit - not too much.

What should I get? look out for? Makes to buy?

Please help I have no idea.

I also don't like lipstick cece - you might find lip gloss or a very sheer lip colour (clinique have some nice ones) a good start, and try neutral colours like beige, nude or subtle pink. You don't have to go from nothing to a face full of slap, you've got to feel comfortable.

creamy blushers are better and last longer than powder try natural blush from clinique

I know LL - I just love all that stuff

It's really true though! It is! I say that as a longtime make-up-phobe who only really discovered make-up as an adult - have only been using blusher since last year. It does make you look a lot better in a very quick and easy way. Which you need when you are a haggard old bat who keeps going to bed too late like me.

I used to be very scared of make-up counters but now I lurve them - even though I don't actually buy much (tend to spend a long time tracking down something I really adore before buying). My MIL asked me to take her make-up shopping in the big city (she's a farmer) so I took her to Harvey Nicks and she sp[ent £250 at MAC - my head nearly fell off.)

I second Bobbi Brown - love them, not at all intimidating, and gave good advice, eg for a more natural look go for black/brown mascara not black, even tho I am quite dark. Obvious really but had never thought of it and it did make a difference.

Have you got an Aveda or Origins near you ?-they have lovely make-up and staff are very friendly.
I love Space nk but the staff in my local one are not friendly and are VERY intimidating.
The Aveda tinted moisturer is fab, very natural looking.
I like Clinique lipglosses and their Naturally Glossy mascara.

Body Shop are good and if you go in store you can book a make over, I find they are a lot more "normal" and have time to talk than the bigger stores like Boots and Debenhams.

Afternoon all,

I am currently wearing some clinique foundation in neutral to try it out. I was very brave and went in at 9.30 before it got busy! So haven't bought any yet but gauging reactions to this...

Was wondering though whether I should opt for one with sun protection built in?

Have new Chanel Mascara - can't remember what it called but got a nifty wand and everyone has started congratulating me on wearing mascara - which I have done for years - although an Estee Lauder one - so it must show!!

Think it was called superfit foundation. The clinique lady wasn't there and the other lady couldn't find the barely there make up.

So far it has had a good reaction in playground but DH isn't home yet.
