Wear all your clothes - who's with me?

I did this before and last night I got out my ridiculous summer pile of clothes.
I really don't need any new clothes so I'm going to try and wear what I have!
I think I'll start with tops as in taking out some of my winter clothes I found loads I had hardly worn through the winter.
Today: khaki skirt I've NEVER worn, Boden preloved top, white with little green print, sheer tights, beige patent flats, green cardy.

This is such a good idea.

I have so many clothes I can't remember what I have. There are some things in my wardrobe I know I haven't worn for years, but I can't face throwing them out because "you never know". Most of these tend to be boring/functional items that I would pass over in favour of wearing the latest/nicest item.

I have a bit of a charity shop habit, which doesn't help; when you go to a regular shop you are generally looking to fill a gap (e.g. I need a new black skirt), but charity shopping is just a pick and mix of things you probably don't need but just really like!

I do fluctuate between a 10 and a large 12 (fortunately at the lower end of the scale right now; another low carber) so I'm not planning to throw out something specifically because it doesn't fit, but if it's boring, and I can't bring myself to wear it day after day....then why don't I get shot of it?

Good plan to turn the hangers around. Also, with my drawers I use the Marie Kondo folding method, and things are returned to the front of the drawer, so by definition the items at the back are the least worn.

Today I'm wearing a recently purchased navy Gap broderie top with a pair of Whistles jeans I bought last year, but didn't actually wear until now, because they were a little snug.

I tried another outfit today:

  • JoJo denim maternity shorts
  • Boden sleeveless v-neck top in navy and cream
  • Ghost long-ish cream cardi
  • Clark’s tan sandals with slight heel
  • Coach tan cross body bag

Again I liked the outfit so will be keeping all items

Two more tops worn, one Johnny B (I'm quite short and their older teen clothes fit nicely!) and one I think is H&M but I'm wearing it so I can't check!
My blouses are mainly waiting to be ironed so I'm going for summer trousers (will they still fit? Who can say) and t-shirts this week for work.

Oops I forgot about this but it's going well. I think I've worn all my summer trousers and they all fit and are all at least serviceable.
On to tops now. Jean shorts and a White Stuff linen thin jumper with a vest top underneath. It's quite good for me actually to wear non-t-shirt tops at weekends as I tend to think "Oh just t-shirts" and don't get enough wear out of my blouses.

I've had a pair of white trousers from Oasis in my wardrobe for about the past 10 years. I bought them pre-children and they were pretty expensive (by my standards). I'm not sure if I've ever worn them as I was always worried about spilling something on them and ruining them!
Anyway, fast-forward to yesterday. We went out for dinner to celebrate a family birthday (first evening out in goodness knows how long) and I finally wore the trousers. DD (14 months) knocked my spoon out of my hand and I got a lovely, big, red stain on my trousers. Today I put them in the wash on a handwash cycle. The trouser legs are now 5 inches shorter than the lining!! I now really wish I'd worn them when I had the chance.
This summer I'm going to really try & make more of an effort with my clothes and wear what I have rather than 'saving for best'.

drspouse · 03/06/2018 21:52

Oh no Shuffle! Can you convert them into capris?

CointreauVersial · 04/06/2018 00:17

I've been making a conscious decision to wear stuff I'd forgotten about.

Last week I wore a green fine-knit top from Next, which is years old, but still looks good. I also dug out a Boden striped breton which had been languishing forgotten. Then I had a rummage in the loft and found a pair of black work trousers that were previously too small for me....but now aren't. I did have to shorten the length by a couple of inches because they date back to when I always wore heels to work, and now I don't. Happy days - I feel like I have a new pair of trousers for nothing!

BitOutOfPractice · 04/06/2018 05:27

I'm doing this with shoes. I'm on day 40-something so far. Different shoes every day. It's been very interesting actually because it's forced me to Aldo wear different clothes too

Linen jeans, a Pepperberry top that actually fits (tried on a home made top that doesn't but I can let it out), and a Uniqlo fine knit sloppy jumper. Have a small GP procedure and wanted my arms free (but coverable)

Those of you with clothes in different sizes due to not fitting in the smaller ones what are you doing with them - I am trying to do a major declutter at the mo and am getting rid of clothes that are too small that I do not particularly like but have some nice dresses that I do like from white stuff etc that are brand new but just too small.

I also need to give my diet a major overhaul and lose some weight but currently not in right headspace for this.

I don't know whether to just get rid off anything too small and enjoy wearing the right size clothes for me now or shove the more in the loft and hope that I will get round to losing some weight and be able to wear them.

my budget is going to be pretty restricted going forward and unlikely to be able to spend to the same standard in the future but do I have the willpower to lose and keep the weight off.

One thing I do know I am fed up of seeing all the clothes that I cannot get into and hanging on to them is not helping my decluttering _ but at least I'm not the only one who appears to be like this :-)

greenberet · 04/06/2018 13:22

BitOutOfPractice - 40 days lol - I often wonder how many days I could go if I could fit into all my clothes - I have far too many - I want to simplify my life and not to have to make decisions like this - but some days I like to wear something different and not the same old - yet most of the time the same old does and when I want something different I tend to buy new - hence why so many clothes still with labels on - because the urge soon passes.

I need to find a cure!

CointreauVersial · 04/06/2018 13:27

Greenberet - I have a 6ft rail in my loft (which is a walk-in), so anything I can't currently fit into, or is out of season, goes there. My weight only fluctuates by 20lbs or so, so it's mostly trousers and skirts that are a problem.

Every now and then, I weed a few things out of my wardrobe to go on the rail, and have a pick-through of the rail to see if there's anything I want to bring back into circulation. I've just lost a stone, so am almost back to my ideal weight, and it's lovely being able to dig out treasures I haven't fitted into for ages. Although the rail could really do with a cull - in amongst the classic/timeless items there are some things I can't see I'll EVER wear again, no matter what I weigh.

WellTidy · 04/06/2018 13:56

Greenberet I have loads of storage in DS' room, so everything that doesn't fit me is in there at the moment. In terms of all of my clothes, I would estimate that about 90% of them just don't fit. I really want to lose weight, as I love my clothes that don't fit, but I am short on willpower. I am just not in the right place to do it right now. I am hoping that will change.

Today I am wearing new clothes (had to buy bigger sizes):
M & S white 3/4 length trousers
Cobalt blue top which is a knock off of the Boden Ravello top (mine is from M&S)
Moshulu Wasabi sandals in blackcurrant
V pleased to be using an old Radley tan bag that I re-discovered!

greenberet · 04/06/2018 17:38

Thanks for the replies although I'm not really sure if they help me :-) - I have storage in Dd's room which currently has smart winter clothes in plus two suitcases - summer clothes in my room and prob 90% don't fit either -also have summer holiday clothes - I seem to have acquired duplicate clothes in different sizes most of which I can't currently wear _ I also seem to go through phases and with recent hot weather have wanted to wear dresses but those I have don't fit and so have bought new - but kept old - bottom line I think just too many bloody clothes - I don't work so don't really need the smart stuff but every now and then get fed up of wearing jeans - I bought everything out the loft so could see what I had - and don't want to put it back as have impending house move...

Shufflebumnessie · 04/06/2018 20:28

drspouse - Unfortunately not as they didn't just shrink length ways. If I drop about 4 sizes I might just be able to squeeze in to them!! Grin

drspouse · 11/06/2018 15:52

Tried on two tops this morning and don't like either of them! One has a hideous bow at the back and I will sell/give it away. The other is nice but a bit tight so I'll keep it and see if I can lose a tiny bit more weight.

In answer to the previous post about clothes that are too small - if it's way too small - get rid - if only a bit too small like this top - keep in wardrobe but not if it gets to be ridiculous.

I don't keep tshirts that are too small, as I have too many anyway and I'd need to lose way too much weight for them not to look bad if things are stretchy already.

OP posts:
drspouse · 16/07/2018 18:51

Right I lost this but... I've worn all my skirts! except one that's too tight but I'm keeping it anyway
Rain today so I'm wearing trousers (Boden chinos) and a long tunic.

The summer weather has been great. I have been wearing holiday clothes in the UK, as has everyone, and the streets have looked so much more cheerful with the injection of colour. This is the summer of the 21st century so far! I don't quite have things I last wore in 76, but I rarely dump stuff unless it's shabby and threadbare (and then I'm pretty ruthless) so I have quite a range to choose from, and I am really enjoying dressing this summer.

drspouse · 17/07/2018 16:21

Yes that's me OCSock. I go to hot and sunny places for work sometimes it's a hard life so I normally get things out for the summer, put them away unworn, not this year!
