Eyelash extensions

I've just been to enquire about having these done at a salon that I've been to before to have my hair done.

When I asked if I needed a patch test, she said I didn't need one, yet the few other places where I enquired have said I did. I told her I haven't had eyelash extensions before, but have had my hair done at the salon before. I chose to have Russian lashes. I'm not having them done for a couple of weeks but I'm just a bit unsure as to why I don't need a patch test at this place? I would have thought its standard practice everywhere? I think a phone call is in order!

Okay so I've rang the salon & they said the actual eyelash extension/glue doesn't touch the skin, it's adhered to the eyelash itself about half way down & they wouldn't do a patch test anyway as it would be putting glue onto your skin that wouldn't come off.

I wonder if this is just an alternative way they do it, more research I think! I'm having them done before I go away & the last thing I want is something going wrong 4 days before I fly! I can't get in anywhere else, there was Superdrug, but I got a bad feeling when I enquired in there!

Not sure if Russians are the same as classics but I had to get patch test for classic extensions.

I recently had eyelash extensions and didn’t have to have a patch test. The glue doesn’t touch your skin. I have never had a reaction to any hair colour products or lash lift (which I did have a patch test for) but I will say my eyes watered a lot because of the glue fumes. I was streaming for whole treatment but it wore off straight after. My eyes were a bit puffy after because of this. Just something to bear in mind maybe.

Ive had lash extensions at various places for around 6 years or more now. I have always been asked to have a patch test 48 hours before treatment.

The glue doesn't touch your skin but it doesn't mean you won't be allergic to it. Someone I know had a reaction to the glue and had to go back the next day for them removing.

Ok so I've been googling about it & surprise surprise lots of horror stories, cue DM stories about ladies who have had reactions to because they weren't patch tested!

I am a bit 🤔 about going ahead with them now. I don't want to risk ruining the first holiday in 6 yrs just because I wanted some eyelash extensions! Maybe Superdrug was a safer bet after all, she did offer a patch test & it is my eye area we're talking about! I think I'd be a fool to have something done that I'd not had done before without having a patch test - or am I over thinking it?

Unless I can find a really good bloody mascara!

Tbh, I got patch tested and everything was fine. I went away for the weekend and my right eye became very sore with a red lump on lash line.

I ended up pulling them off as they irritated me.

I’ve had patch tests at the two places I’ve had them done. As bekind says though, a lot of people find them too irritating even if they don’t react to the glue. I love mine and have had them done every fortnight for 6 years now! Loads of my friends found them really annoying though and had picked them off within a couple of days.

youvegottobekidding · 10/05/2018 22:52

The more I actually think about it, the more I'm talk myself out of it, I don't usually bother with lashes/nails or anything like this, I just wanted to have nice lashes/have a change for my holiday. And it's another expense too! I occasionally wear contact lenses, not very often, but maybe more so on holiday.

I've just seen somewhere not far from that does lash tinting for a very reasonable price, I think that might be more suitable for me, after all I'll be spending most of the holiday in the pool & beach with the kids. I may just go for that.

You should maybe try elleebana lash lift op?

I work in a salon and our insurance requires us to patch test. Although the glue doesn't touch the skin it can still cause a reaction and I have seen it happen. I've had clients had them on for years then suddenly became allergic. Tbh I wouldn't have them done by someone who was happy to do them without a patch test I'd go somewhere else.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 07:51

I’ve been having mine done for a year, and I needed a patch test every time I went somewhere new. My friend now does them at her house and she insisted, because it invalidates her insurance without it.

Perfecto · 11/05/2018 07:56

I had a patch test for eyelash tinting which I had before eyelash flares. The eyelash tint was rubbish by the way although I have fine lashes so it didn’t make any difference.

cookiesaurus · 11/05/2018 08:01

You could try LVL instead - it's like a perm for eyelashes so adds in a bit if curl and makes them look longer.

You definitely need to have a patch test first though but it's brilliant especially if you aren't used to false lashes. I much prefer LVL as it's more natural yet still enhances your lashes.

The glue on false eyelashes can also be eroded when using sun cream.

Enjoy your holiday!

youvegottobekidding · 11/05/2018 08:11

Thanks for the replies, I definitely think it's not worth the risk going ahead without a patch test. At least I know there's an alternative if I decide not to have eyelash extensions.

I used to have eyelash extensions quite often. First place I went to did not do a test (I was naive!) and I had no problems for months. Then I had a bad reaction and was told I could not wear extensions, contact lens or mascara for two weeks. Gutted. I've now not worn them for over a year and recently went somewhere else to try them again. They did a test with the glue on a patch of skin behind my ear and I had an IMMEDIATE reaction. So no extensions for me! I now use Spectaculash eyelash serum - been using for a few weeks and will not go back to extensions again as my lashes now look ok _ yeah they are never going to be looooong, but they look good enough for me with mascara. You only get one pair of eyes and I would definitely not risk it!
