10 Year old DD - hairy legs and under arms

Hi All,

As the subject says my DD is 10 and starting to get quite hairy under her arms and legs, she is feeling paranoid to wear certain types of dresses/shirts etc, so what do you guys recommend for hair removal at that age?

Mine has a battery Lady Shave - easy to use and no risk of hurting herself. I did say she could try my epilator but she couldn't believe how much it hurt Grin

margaritasbythesea · 10/05/2018 13:42

Lady shave here too. I do it for her but only because she wants me to.

ColdFeetAndHotCakes · 10/05/2018 14:36

10 feels a bit young to be going full on with a razor. I personally don't shave, so advice from me is if you don't feel comfortable in a situation (eg. I wouldn't be comfortable showing my legs or underarms in an office, but am happy to wear shorts and a sports bra hiking or on the beach) then a thin cardigan and a thin pair of tights and nobody will be any the wiser.

If you have an electric beard trimmer or a hair trimmer set (the electric ones with a guard) it's super easy to trim your underarm hair down without irritating the skin. When it's short it lays flat against your underarm and nobody notices, but when it's longer it can stick out a bit and be more noticeable.

BadTasteFlump · 10/05/2018 14:42

Hmm have to say I disagree coldfeet. If the DD wants to shave, it's her body, her choice, surely? And telling her how to 'hide' it under tights is only going to make her feel the hair is something to be embarrassed about, surely?

Jozxyqk · 10/05/2018 14:54

I agree with BadTasteFlump. I am a dedicated razor-avoider (i.e. I'm generally too lazy to deal with it). DD is 6 & has no concept yet that some women remove body hair. However when she starts getting more hairy, she'll get an electric razor to start with, as soon as she asks me about it. I got very dark & thick body hair from about 11 (despite being dark blonde) & it was bloody miserable not being able to remove it easily & being worried how visible it was. Her body, her life, her choice. Not everyone's cut out to be a radical feminist from the time they take their first steps, it takes some of us decades to get there. Or longer.

BadTasteFlump · 10/05/2018 14:57

Or they can be a feminist who shaves Smile

BadTasteFlump · 10/05/2018 14:58

Sorry didn't mean to sound pissy!

My 10 year old has been getting a bit hairy lately, i got her a battery lady shave. No risk of cutting herself and easy to use. She knows she doesn't have to shave if she doesn't want to, but giving her her own razor means she can make her own choice.

SmallestInTheClass · 10/05/2018 17:56

Agree, Lady shave. If she wants to remove it she will somehow so you might as well support her. Let her know it's OK not to if she doesn't want, but support her if she does. I used a pair of scissors as a girl as I was too scared and embarrassed to ask for a razor.

MeanTangerine · 10/05/2018 18:18

I vote for the electric shaver. I "wasn't allowed" to remove my leg hair at that age, so I sliced my shins to shreds with my dad's old disposable bic. It was still preferable to being hairy.

greeneggblueegg · 10/05/2018 18:19

My 10 yo DD is quite hairy and has been using a lady shaver for her lower legs. However she has recently been complaining that her pubic hair "is too long" and is annoying her. Not sure what to advise Confused

Jozxyqk · 11/05/2018 10:12

BadTasteFlump - no offence taken - my decision not to shave my legs actually hasn't got so much to do with my feminist principles at the fact that a lot of the time I don't feel well enough to stand in the shower long enough to do it. My feminist principles just stop me caring about the inevitable result. Grin TBH if I could manage it, I'd do it regularly but I don't like the regrowth.

I do shave under my arms though, as that takes 20 seconds once or twice a week & it means my deodorant works better. So that's a hygiene issue.

lovely123 · 11/05/2018 10:35

Thanks for all the views, I will look into a ladyshave

My girls use the GilletteVenus disposable razors that have the moisture bar on them. They haven’t cut themselves & get a close shave. The electric razor gave them a rash & didn’t work at all. I tried waxing them as I am a beauty therapist but they found it too painful.

LoveInTokyo · 11/05/2018 11:00

What everybody else said about the ladyshave.

I imagine most of her classmates will start removing their leg and underarm hair as soon as it becomes visible. There’s no sense in making your daughter feel self conscious just because she’s hitting puberty a bit earlier than some of the others.

Marylou2 · 11/05/2018 11:05

DD 11 is using a Gillette Venus disposable to shave underarms with great success. It only takes 30 seconds once a week. We use the Gillette gel too. No irritation or cuts at all. I did it for her the firm couple of time and now she happily does it herself in the shower. She watched me do my legs last week and has asked if she can try that too before holiday. I use exactly the same method as underarms. It’s quick and easy. Rinse and moisturise legs after. No bother at all. The time to start is when it bothers the child. Maybe eight, maybe never.

Wallywobbles · 11/05/2018 11:19

DD1 started shaving underarms at 9/10. Legs we wax with much drama a few times a year. She uses à trimer thing on bikini line now at 13.
