Killer dress for 50th birthday

tumpymummy · 09/05/2018 01:23

Any suggestions for a dress that I can wear to my 50th birthday party? Am size 14ish and hate my tummy. Must have tried on 30 dresses today and I looked pregnant in most of them. Up until 10-15 years ago (before kids and menopause) I was slim. But now my middle has thickened out I just don't know what suits me. I like all the floral stuff in the shops but am struggling to find anything flattering. (Am apx 5ft5 tall).

What sort of colours do you like and what's the budget? How dressed up do you want to be?

Wrap dresses can be very flattering

Congratulations on your upcoming Birthday.

What’s your budget?

Are there any features you want to showcase, like boobs or legs?

BigFatBloomers · 09/05/2018 02:10

Depending on how big your budget is, these Bombshell dresses are brilliant. They hold you in in all the right places and the draping is very flattering over your stomach.

You quite often see them on ebay

Phase eight have some beautiful dresses. If it’s a confidence thing, and you’re worrying about your middle try a V neck rouched crossover front, with a feature to the side to distract. Don’t go body con but choose something that cinches in the waistline to give you an hourglass look. Make sure the fabric has some stretch to it.

Debut in Debenhams had some beautiful dresses in either a solid colour or floral print. If you have ebay search debut satin dress. Add some Spanx to boost your confidence, only you need to know 😊

I am a similar shape to you and age. I have a few excellent dresses. Wrap dresses look unflattering and aging on me.

Something a bit loser, shift style in silk looks lovely.

What is your budget? I'll post some examples.

tumpymummy · 10/05/2018 18:42

Thanks for suggestions. Budget is up to about £90 if it;s the right dress. Some of your suggestions are lovely, but probably a bit too formal. I am looking for something floral and summery. Today I have been to Debenhams and brought home a few possibles to try, plus also a dress from Phase 8 that I saw on another mumsnet post last night, where the OP had posted some pictures. Unfortunately cant find that thread now, but wanted to thank her for posting dress. If anyone comes up with any other suggestion still open to ideas!

I just bought this H&M dress for my 50th (well, I'm 51 now....party is a bit late). Not floral, but very flattering on.

Is this dressy enough?

Are you me? I am the same age, height and shape as you OP, again a recent change, I have recently discovered Roman and their dresses are really flattering on me

How about a Get Cutie dress? The pencil dress is fabulously flattering on an apple shape.
They are handmade in Brighton and are happy to "tweak" for you if you want a bit longer or different bust to bottom size.
Loads of fabric to choose from as well. They do everything from plain, to full on flowers or Mexican wrestlers! They also sell on eBay if you want to find a bargin version.

Pencil Shape

Thanks all, some great ideas. rattysparklebum I am you! As definitely some interesting dresses at roman originals. Although there isn't a branch very close to me even though I live in a big city. The branches all seem to be in smaller towns. I see they do free postage but £3 charge on returns and there are several that I would want to try so would mean a large amount on the credit card, but might have to try them.

I've got some Roman dresses, am sure I got them in John Lewis, HofF, or Debs, def not directly from Roman.
