Help me please? I need a Mother of the Bride dress, is this ok?

Ralph Lauren. I am 5ft 8, a size 10-12 depending on the style, olive skin and dark hair, I have a more bulgy tummy than I have ever had and am 55. The wedding is outdoors in August this year, I have no idea what to wear as I am a Fatface kinda person. What colour accessories?

If not, what would you suggest? I really want to look good for my only daughter's day.

Nice dress! I would accessorise with the same bright pink in the dress. Pink shoes, pink 3/4 sleeve jacket, gold or silver earrings, no necklace with that high neck line.

Mercurial123 · 05/05/2018 16:58

Nice dress but yet another designer using polyester, it's really annoying.

Jonbb · 05/05/2018 17:02

A bit short for a church wedding?

Evangeline3 · 05/05/2018 17:03

I like it but it looks quite short?

Paintbox · 05/05/2018 17:09

Another one thinking it is a bit short, especially for someone 5’8”.

margotsdevil · 05/05/2018 17:22

It's a lovely dress but maybe not massively "mother of the bride"? Depends how much of a statement you want to make though. I would wear this as an ordinary guest with a hat/wrap.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/05/2018 17:24

I like the dress. Attractive pattern. I agree with others that you might want to think about whether a man-made fibre is the best thing for what might be a hot day, but knowing the British summer it could be quite a cool day even in August.

Really too short? Model in pictures is 5'10", OP is 5' 8". On the model it's a little above knee level standing. Seems fine to me. OP has an olive skin tone. If I wore that I'd look like a walking cushion but I'm 5'5" and have very pale skin (even in summer) and sturdy legs as well as a bit of a tum.

I assume you're happy to go sleeveless? That's another area I could do with covering up if I expected to be closely observed, sigh.

TeisanLap · 05/05/2018 17:31

OP, Im 5'8" and wear RL dresses. The length will be fine on you.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/05/2018 17:34

I also think it looks a bit short for a wedding, it makes it look less elegant. Lovely for a holiday but maybe not enough gravitas for a bride’s Mother ?

Haberpop · 05/05/2018 17:41

It sat on my knee when I tried it on is that too short? (I am a good 2in shorter than the model) It's not a church wedding, it's outdoor. The dress felt lovely and light on, it is the first one I have tried that I felt comfortable in. I thought a short jacket with three quarter length sleeves in case the weather is cooler. The wedding was originally planned for the beach so was planned to be a laid back affair but then my dad got sick so the wedding was moved closer to home so dad could attend but sadly that wasn't to be.

Whereabouts in the country are you OP? There may be some better places to go to close to you? And total budget for shoes, dress, hat and bag?

Haberpop · 05/05/2018 17:50

Depths of Suffolk, I can probably go upto £400 in total.

Also all that polyester, outer and lining, will be hot and sticky in August. Silk or cotton would be far nicer to wear.

sonjadog · 05/05/2018 18:37

Knee length sounds fine. I agree it is a bit short on the model. It is a nice dress.

Swifey · 05/05/2018 19:00

Look up Gina Baconni, good dresses and about the right price, then accessorise well.
I think that RL dress will be too hot and too short. You want to be elegant, but not frumpy.

Swifey · 05/05/2018 19:06

Or Karen Millen has some lovely stuff at the moment too!!
You could order a load from John Lewis and then try them all on at home and see what suits.

Swifey · 05/05/2018 19:09

Also, rather than buying a hat, you can always hire one. If you go to a good milliner they will annotate a hat or fascinator to match/compliment your outfit. They will ask you to take it with you.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 05/05/2018 19:09

Polyester feels light until you wear it in the heat. You will feel like a boiled ham. Don’t do it.

goose1964 · 05/05/2018 19:13

I like it, it would look fab with a cropped jacket in one of the primary colours from the dress. How formal is the wedding though? I wore a purple swing dress for DDs wedding (she helped me choose) that dress would have been OTT

SirVixofVixHall · 05/05/2018 19:25

I was just looking at the outlet. There are several dresses by Milly (in the wedding guest section ) that are similar shapes but in silk/cotton. Such as this one here www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/knee-length_cod1071994539331184.html

SirVixofVixHall · 05/05/2018 19:28

This is pretty, but a bit over budget. www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/midi_cod2526016082314354.html

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 05/05/2018 20:02

If you’ve good legs, I’d say yes. Sorry to be judge but, you did ask 😊. With a dress that short, your legs need to be slim, varicose vein free and in tights.
