Will a LIVE hair colour with lightener really turn my hair orange?

I used cyber purple but it's much darker than I wanted so was going to try ultra violent with "one step lightening and colour"

I emailed the company and they said it shouldn't be used on already coloured hair and may turn my hair orange (it's medium brown naturally but I've been dying it years)

That seems insane to me, as surely you'd only ever be able to use it once (if you can't then use it on coloured hair?)

Anyone got any experience of it?

No experience of that brand but I'm currently going from purple to blonde via many shades of copper, peach and apricot. You'll need a toner to calm the jaffa look.

See I just can't see how it'll send it orange - it's supposed to lighten by 3 shades but it's a purple dye .. ?

I've used a couple of different live colours interchangeably - pure purple and ultra violet I think. They just turn it purple. No idea what mechanism would be required for it to turn orange instead! Maybe they misunderstood your question?

As I understand, you can't colour in top of colour so I would think the one step lighten and colour wouldn't work. You would probably need to either strip the dye with a colour remover or bleach first, then colour with the shade you want.

But also I've found purple shades fade really quickly, so it might not be too dark for long.

Thanks everyone. I've already bought 2 boxes of it now so may just see what happens but glad to know it's unlikely to go orange! (I don't think they misunderstood, I think they're covering their back!)

Because it has bleach in it. Lightener is a 'nice' term for bleach.

And live xxl is an absolute bastard to get out of hair (you basically can’t).

The orange tone comes from lightening your hair. When you lighten brunette hair, the underlying pigment which is orange will be exposed. So you will go through various stages of brassy orange and yellow tones before finally removing the warmth. Obviously this can ruin the integrity of your hair’s condition.

Colouring hair isn’t an exact science which is why they are giving you a disclaimer - colouring pre-coloured hair can end up with erratic results. You may have purple dye, but chances are that your hair could be very warm after lightening it and you may get a strange colour in the end if the purple isn’t strong enough to counteract the orange tone. Think an unflattering muddy sort of colour, or dark hair that isn’t what you wanted but also looks gingery in the sun. They are just saying use the dye at your own risk really

(Honestly I think your biggest issue is that the new purple dye will probably make your hair darker, and also ruin the condition. I doubt the lightener included in the dye is strong enough to lighten your hair as much as you need)
