She feels like the only 17 year old with dandruff . It’s not actually that bad but she had tried everything. Makes it difficult to wear her hair up or braided . Anyone amy tried and trusted remedies ?

I've just started using Philip Kingsley Itchy, Flaky Scalp and so far so good! It's expensive but if it continues to work then it'll be worth it.

Gosh lots more recommendations. Right going to suggest she increase the washing and make a list of those shampoos and go see what I can get that we have not tried so far .

How long are you sticking with each product for? It takes a few weeks in my experience for the product that eventually works to make a difference.

I've got same problem with my 15 year old dd OP. Tried every shampoo going. Nizoral worked at first now doesn't seem to be as effective.

Combing the conditioner through in the shower is good to stop product build-up if she has fine hair.

Inarutneedhelp · 04/05/2018 12:58

She sticks with them for ages . She has extremely thick hair . She uses conditioners in the long length of her hair. Some work for a while but then don’t seem as effective .

I was told by my doctor I probably had psoriasis of the scalp and was prescribed Nizoral. That did work. I found being pregnant made the problem go away completely so I'm assuming it's related to hormones. Nowadays I don't use conditioner on the roots and I wash more frequently. I also find that dying my hair makes a huge difference so I redye my hair once it starts getting itchy again. Not sure that I have visible flakes on my shoulders though there are flakes on my scalp, mine is more a problem with itchiness.

When my dd had a really bad bout of eczema her dermatologist nurse recommended Dermax (for dandruff as well) shampoo, it is available on prescription also. Brilliant stuff.

Apple cider vinegar left on the scalp for an hour or two. Do it once or twice a week to start then once a week. We used one with ‘the mother’ still in it. I was sceptical but it worked.

Inarutneedhelp · 06/05/2018 08:07

Queen what do you do just rub it in wet or dry hair ?

What worked best for me was aspirin! Buy the dissolvable stuff (about 20p a packet) and add one to the shampoo in your hand and let it mostly dissolve before washing. I did that for a couple of weeks and then added the last two or three to the bottle (where they dissolved really slowly but that's another issue). I have dry skin generally, and if I have a flair upon my scalp I always go back to aspirin.

Biologifemini · 06/05/2018 08:14

Does she dry her scalp properly?
I have thick hair and if it is fungal, warm damp conditions will make it worse.
I had dandruff for a period and washed it daily and blasted my roots properly dry. Dandruff went pretty fast.
I’d also change her pillowcase with each hair wash until it is gone.
As I understand it is a superficial skin infection so you have to treat it like a fungal skin infection otherwise it will just keep coming back.

Biologifemini · 06/05/2018 08:15

Oh sorry - add diluted Apple cider vinegar to her hair as a pre wash.
That kills most stuff dead.

Sparkletastic · 06/05/2018 08:16

T Gel and washing at least every other day.

AnnaMagnani · 06/05/2018 09:06

T-Gel or Nizoral.

DH had miserable dandruff for years, insisted he knew what he was doing. Eventually I got fed up of looking at it Blush and got him some T-gel and it was gone. He doesn't have it any more.

inarut I put some in a cup and dabbed it on DC’s scalp with cotton wool when her hair was dry then washed it out as normal a couple of hours later. It doesn’t smell great but it worked!

BossBaby7 · 06/05/2018 17:26

Op vinegar works!!! I shampoo then I use it neat or 1:1 water to vinegar and dip my fingers and massage the scalp leave 20 mins then wash hair with water only stings eyes though so be careful. Repeat 2 or 3 times a week.
Lush shampoo bar is very good too.

BossBaby7 · 06/05/2018 17:27

Or if you have a spray bottle it should make the vinegar application easier but watch out for eyes!
