Why on earth are so many teen bras padded?

Really?

DD is 11 and very tall and slim - developing overnight it seems and she needs a bra. They all seem to either be padded or underwired and I want to get her something soft without it making her bust look any bigger than it is. She's getting a bit self conscious as it is.

Any recommendations?

M&s do non padded triangle shaped ones. I buy triangle bras (google them) as well as sports bras that just keep you feeling secure and comfy.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 02/05/2018 17:08

I don’t think the ‘padding’ most bras in the shops have us to make breasts look bigger but to stop nipples being visable. That’s certainly what I wear them for.

FootnerFace · 02/05/2018 17:08

When my breasts started developping they were a strange shape that i didnt see in teens or other women and my nipples were so sensitive and sore i would have loved padded ones for comfort, protection as my nipples used to hurt and become hard so easily that id try to push them hard back in and yes nicer shape.

Rainboho · 02/05/2018 17:09

It’s not to make things look bigger, it’s for comfort as everything can be quite sore when you’re growing.

acornsandnuts · 02/05/2018 17:09

I don’t think they’re all padded rather Moulded seems to be the thing

FootnerFace · 02/05/2018 17:11

I used to cross my arms against my chest to hide my visible nipples. I would have loved a padded bra but mum eventually only bought me flimpsy huge half cotton half lace non wired non padded brasiers. Awful. Im buying mine padded ones.

GummyGoddess · 02/05/2018 17:12

I'm pretty sure it's to stop nipples showing and to give a uniform shape rather than making them look bigger.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/05/2018 17:13

There are loads advertised as 'padded' acorns, as well as moulded. I think I'm just getting old and a bit po faced ... Grin

DDs say they prefer moulded so nipples aren't visible. M&S have some lovely soft teen bras without wiring.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/05/2018 17:14

She's so self conscious about them. I think maybe moulded might be the way to go.

Actually, that's a really good point.

Oh gods, you've reminded me!! URGH!!

I wore sports bras as an (early developing really awkward really uncomfortable) pre-teen, then these horrible triangle half lacy things that would look terrible under a Tshirt and make it totally obvious where my nipples are and also ITCH, then discovered (lightly) padded underwires and never looked back.

1)comfortable 2)no visible nipples 3) smooth under a Tshirt.

MarthaArthur · 02/05/2018 17:26

Debenhams do also non wired blouse appropriate bras that cover nipples.

SmallestInTheClass · 02/05/2018 17:34

Yes definitely to help cover nipples, so embarrasing to have them poking out. Mortifying at any age but especially as a teenager.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 02/05/2018 17:37

Moulded bras definitely the way forward under white school shirts. I loathed the way you could see nipples through bra and shirt Shock Still wear thick moulded ones now to avoid it.

hazeyjane · 02/05/2018 17:41

I think it's because everything's a bit more sensitive as they are developing so a bit of padding adds protection. If you want non padded, and sports bras - John Lewis do both (dd1 - 12 - said their sports bras are the best)

OP - I was also outraged at ‘padded’ bras being sold for young teens!
However, I think it’s more to do with semantics. Moulded would better describe the ones DD13 wears from M&S. They don’t make her bust look any bigger but I think she likes the fact they cover her nipples.

MrsJayy · 02/05/2018 19:08

Every few months there is a shocked mum going first bra shopping for the daughter and there is always reassurance that it is fine and no big deal Smile

ragged · 02/05/2018 19:47

New nipples chafe.

motorpink · 02/05/2018 19:51

Push up bras are what makes your boobs look bigger. Normal padded/moulded don’t do that.
