Are these sandals big enough (with feet pictures!)

For the first summer in 10 years I'm not in a surgical contraption of some sort for walking. OK, I can't manage much more than tevas (tried birkenstocks, but just couldn't make them work), but I am still ridiculously happy. But having put the them on, my feet feel stupidly vulnerable and exposed, especially my toes. This is my normal size, do I need to size up? Where are your toes meant to sit in sandals?

I think it's more the style of the sandal that's the issue. The straps seem to sit in a strange place on your foot. Most sandals seem to be more over towards the toes. And the strap near your ankle looks too big. Are there are any other styles in the same brand you can try on?

MollyHuaCha · 02/05/2018 10:09

They look too big around the ankle.

ilovecherries · 02/05/2018 10:15

Hm, you might be right. These were the only ones in the range that came nearest to looking like a normal sandal rather than a walking shoe with cut-outs, which was why I chose them. Plus the fact that they aren't that coloured canvas type material that a lot of walking sandals are. Maybe Tevas aren't going to be the answer after all. I was hoping it was just down to the shock of seeing my bare feet that was making me feel odd. I tried Hotter tourists, but they weren't right either, and salt waters are just too thin. I desperately want to wear summer dresses this year.

No, the ankle is fine. Because it's Velcro it's double thickness which is making it look bulky, but it's actually very secure.

They are very strange. Most sandals would reach the ends of your toes at least. I couldn't wear them. Too much foot exposed at the front. The size looks fine. As long as when you are standing your toes don't go over the edge.

Hoppinggreen · 02/05/2018 10:31

That is quite a lot of toe sticking out, looks a bit odd. Sorry

DelphiniumBlue · 02/05/2018 10:37

They aren't a good fit for you - it looks as if at least 2 toes are touching the outside ridge, which will be uncomfortable long term.
Try Clark's or somewhere like Sports Direct where you can try on a variety of more sporty ( cushioned-soled) styles, like Karrimor.

GottaFindTchange · 02/05/2018 10:45

I think your sandals look nice- perhaps go up half a size?? The tan leather goes with absolutely anything and they look comfortable.
I would suggest you paint your nails- all sandals look better with a bit of colour on the toenails!!

Have you tried Fitflops?
I'm a big fan- there are lots of styles to choose from and many are frumpy but there are plenty which aren't. I like their sandals (nothing with a toe post thanks). They don't rub and are good for walking round all day in.

QueenDandelion · 02/05/2018 10:57

I think you do need the toe end to be a bit longer for your toes to look and feel more comfortable.

I'd also agree with painting your nails if you're up for that – I love getting my colourful toes out in summer, and if my toenails are bare they do somehow look a lot bigger.

The double strap also makes the sandals look more chunky - though I appreciate you're limited for choice. Have a look at crocs, camper and keens for some more comfy and foot-friendly options.

ilovecherries · 02/05/2018 11:28

Oh yes, will def be getting my nails done :). I can't believe I've managed to get to this stage, so even though the sandals are fugly, it feels pretty miraculous to me to be wearing them at all. Unfortunately, I spent over three hours in an outdoors shop in Keswick the other day, and these were def the best of the bunch in terms of look - however the one I tried in the shop was lilac canvas, but I really wanted the leather, so they ordered them in for me. But now I have them on, really not sure. Starting to feel a little despondent after my high hopes :(. FitFlop don't seem to do a decent sandal - it must have a functional ankle strap, and I can't stand a toe post. I went to a wolky store and after a lot of tutting at md this is what they recommended. I nearly cried :(

How about these?

I do have these Keens in bright pink, which were all I could manage with last summer, but I've a) improved since then, although I was very happy to have them at the time and b), they look more like trainers with cut outs rather than a proper sandal.

Considering everything you have said, I think they are lovely, and how exciting.

I would want a half size bigger.

Katy

QueenDandelion · 02/05/2018 11:34

I kind of like wolky, but I can't quite see myself in them, but they do look comfortable!

But as a comfy sandal lover, paradoxically I have found that it's better to buy online as shops have such small ranges and limited sizes. I'd have a good browse online, check out recommendations and look at lots of options, and look for special offers and free p&p/returns, then order several to try on.

Even if you just browse tevas on Amazon, you'll find a much bigger range, and amazon will recommend you more suggestions on each page. Then when you find things you like the look of, you can also search for them elsewhere to look for offers.

ilovecherries · 02/05/2018 11:35

Oh, pavers is one place I haven't been, will look there, thanks Torvi.

They are too small - you already have some cliffhangers, and feet tend to swell a bit in the heat/during the day, so I suspect it'll become even more noticeable later on.
It's likely to also become uncomfortable to wear.

I've always found Ecco sandals very comfortable.

Joinourclub · 02/05/2018 12:29

I think that your feet would slip forward and over the edge as you walk.

I think these look comfy: www.schuh.co.uk/womens/red-or-dead-viscount-tan-sandals/1770596220/

GottaFindTchange · 02/05/2018 13:31

Fitflop have 52 styles of sandal with a back strap. ( tho i only like about 4 of them) They are comfortable and have a more elegant look than some of the outdoors type sandals.

Try sketchers sandals maybe - they have all sorts of shapes/styles/sizes.

DiplomaticDecorum · 02/05/2018 17:39

Is it a teva with adjustable heel straps? Maybe loosen the heel, tighten the ankle (front) and your foot will fit further back in the shoe. If there's no space at the back, you need to go up a size.

Pythonesque · 02/05/2018 17:53

If you can't return the ones you've just got, try making sure you push your feet right back in the heel before you tighten the ankle strap, to hold your foot well back in the footbed. That might help your toes a little.
