Starting Curly Girl Method - join me in achieving shiny bouncy hair!

Have been researching this for ages (3 days Grin )
Anyway found a fab curly girl thread from 2009

However some of the products have been discontinued, not all the blog links work, so I thought I would star a new thread.

So here is what I have gleaned so far:
Sulphates (the stuff which makes your shampoo foam) is a Bad Thing as it strips all your hair of oils, so you need sulphate free shampoo.
Found this list from the original thread which lists all the banned products.

Silicon ( Frizz Ease type serum) is a Bad Thing as it seals up the cuticle, so that moisture cannot get back in.

So moisture is the holy grail, and that is why hair gets frizzy, as it is too dry.

So most curly girls seem to cowash, which is washing with conditioner, or a special runny conditioner type product.

So here are the steps I have figured out, ( I haven’t bought the book yet).

One last wash with a sulphate shampoo, to clear out build up.

On subsequent washes, you cowash, but only use your fingers or a shampoo brush ( a stubby ruby bristled brush) to loosen dirt.

It is recommended that shower not too hot, and also wash hair upside down, so you are not flattening your “ canopy” of curls.

Comb through a handful of conditioner with a wide toothe comb

Also add your styling product in the shower eg scrunch with gel.

DO NOT use a normal towel, dry with a tshirt, or a microfibre towel.

Then there is the “ plopping” method where you lie a dry t shirt on a flat surface. ( loo seat) and sort of lower your head upside down and let your curls gather then sort of gather up the t shirt & fasten gently round head.

either air dry or dry with a diffuser, not too hot.

Other stuff I found : curl type 2 a, b, c, 3 a, b, c 4 a, b, c it’s a whole new world

Also deep condition according to curl type. I am about a 2b and am sitting here with a mixture of coconut oil & olive oil slathered on my hair.

Right off to create some curls!

Good luck I persevered with CG for a couple of years. For some people it works brilliantly but sadly not for me my hair looked crap 80% of the time. I spent a fortune on products.

Ollivander84 · 01/05/2018 09:49

I follow CG Smile works great on my hair and has made a visible difference (I have before and after pics!)

Taytotots · 01/05/2018 10:35

If you are on Facebook there are some groups that have albums of products ('curly girls! conditioner washing group for women' and the less strict 'curly crew'). I've been doing it for over a year now but still trying to find the right product combo. Works really well on my daughter's hair though.

Aridane · 01/05/2018 10:40

Does anybody else find their hair / scalp starts to smell after a couple of weeks of co-washing?

CoteDAzur · 01/05/2018 10:51

"Silicon ( Frizz Ease type serum) is a Bad Thing as it seals up the cuticle, so that moisture cannot get back in."

I've never understood this one.

You wash your hair, it dries, then you put a bit of serum on it. Where is the hair supposed to get moisture from until the next wash?

Aridane · 01/05/2018 10:54

Is it the case that some types of silicone may not readily wash out at the next co-wash, and so the hair remains coated and not receiving moisture??

beyondthepaleandinteresting · 01/05/2018 11:04

Tempted to try this... my hair is 2b or c I think. The problem is that there is so much of it, if I wash it it takes hours and hours to dry (if I wash it at 6.30 am it will just about be dry by lunchtime). And I need to have presentable hair in the morning! So I generally wash and straighten it every couple of days, and it looks reasonable (needs straightened every morning whether or not it’s been washed). I also do quite a lot of exercise, and it’s easier to stick straightened hair in a pony tail and just run the straighteners through it again afterwards.

I do really like my wavy hair, but it’s become a holiday thing only for me.

How do others cope with the drying time? If I wash in the early evening using the curly girl method would it still look presentable the next day? (I doubt it...)

AllyMcBeagle · 01/05/2018 11:08

I'm thinking of giving CG another try. I did it years ago but I think the conditioners I was using were too rich for my 2b/2c hair and weighed it down without shampoo, so I had mixed results. I really liked Jessicurl Rockin' Ringlets styling product that I found out about through some hair forums.

I've been getting Japanese straightening done for years because it was easier than trying to get my hair to behave, but having to give that up because it involves too many chemicals (formaldeshyde etc) and I'm pregnant. I just need to get the old straightened lengths cut off first though before I do CG again.

PrettyWisdomous · 01/05/2018 11:12

Ooh I've never heard of the Curly Girl method, but it could be just what I need. I have type 2a/b hair which is just unruly! It can (sometimes) look nice when I wash, comb and leave it, but mainly I just look like Hagrid Sad

Ollivander would you be willing to share your before/after pics?

I'm off to do some reading!

womanhuman · 01/05/2018 11:20

If you use silicones you need to use sulfates to wash them out. Which means you can’t be sulfate free.

If you use oils or waxes you need soap to wash them out, so you can’t just co-wash.

So really, it’s all about not putting shit on your head you can’t get rid of with just conditioner.

I’ve been doing this for a few years now - my curls are excellent! I kind of cba with leave ins or plopping or anything like that though, so really, all I’m doing is co washing and styling with approved products. No need to spend a fortune. The fb groups are good for checking products. (FWIW, I use yes to carrots conditioner, cantu curl creme and vo5 gel.)

I pretty much follow the CG method these days, although I do use a deep cleansing shampoo once a month or so just to get rid of build up. I know that's a no-no but I find that it really helps and gives my hair more bounce.

TK Maxx is a good place to look for CG-friendly products. I bought a silicone-free serum there a few months ago that is excellent, but I'm coming to the end of it and I've never seen it again in there since! So basically if you find something in there that works for you, stock up!

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/05/2018 11:42

Oh yeah, I use a cleansing conditioner by the Abnormal Beauty Company (who own The Ordinary) that's pretty good. Another TK Maxx purchase, but after it worked so well for me I went out and bought about 10 bottles! So I'm good for a while...

ILoveToLaugh · 01/05/2018 11:48

I'm trying this too. Have found fantastic help on YouTube "real life curly girl" channel) here: m.youtube.com/watch?v=OYtWMBxRf6w
(Hope link works)

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 01/05/2018 11:50

Well I’m sitting here with a t shirt wrapped round my head. I am assuming that the plopping method is to allow the curls time to form, instead of being weighed down & stretched.

I moved the shower head down to shoulder height & washed upside down. Basically everything was done upside down. One sulphate shampoo wash, cowash with silicon free conditioner, tried to rinse with tepid water so as not to open up the cuticles. Then squeezed out water. Scrunched in a bit of leave in conditioner, and then diluted a bit of ds’s Hair gel to maintain the curl. ( theoretically)

My head feels a bit cold though. I think it would definitely be easier on holiday with some actual sun.

I have discovered this delightful bonnet hairdryer on Amazon. ( sorry cannot link as it keeps opening app and have no idea how to copy link). They are between about 4 quid and 15 and attach to normal hairdryer. Think hood for a shampoo & set. I think that could definitely speed things up. There are also some giant diffuser things.

Curly girl method fan here, I love it and it has made a huge difference to my hair

The one thing i don't do is the towel thing - is there really a big difference not drying with a regular terrycloth towel ?

PrettyWisdomous · 01/05/2018 11:56

Wow ollivander your hair is beautiful!

I might need to wait a few weeks to buy some new products before I can really get started...

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 01/05/2018 11:59

I have been aching this girl @spisha on YouTube

Her hair is divine, but she is really evangelical about it

Curly, those bonnet things (with the hairdryer attached?) blow right off your head when you turn the hairdryer on.

I cheat and diffuse dry.

MinnieMinchkin · 01/05/2018 12:48

I have fine hair with 2b waves, and being silicone free really stops my hair getting weighed down. But I can't get away with being SLS free as my scalp gets itchy and greasy so quickly.

zippyswife · 01/05/2018 12:53

I’ve half heartedly been attempting this. But I’ve struggled to understand/find all the info. So thanks for putting it all together OP.

Olliv your curls are beautiful.

AllyMcBeagle · 01/05/2018 13:44

Curly, those bonnet things (with the hairdryer attached?) blow right off your head when you turn the hairdryer on.

Mine's great. I've been using it with curlers because I still have my straightened ends, but it stays firmly on my head. It's this one:
www.amazon.co.uk/Curlformers-Softhood-Black-Accessories/dp/B00VTI24GK?tag=mumsnetforum-21
It's got a string type thing that you tighten around the edge and a chin strap so no risk of flying off! The only thing is to make sure you have a hair dryer with a proper cool setting, as my old hairdryer on the lowest heat still felt too hot when using this. Oh and it looks ridiculous, but who cares right?

AllyMcBeagle · 01/05/2018 13:49

This link looks quite helpful for UK CG compliant products btw. It is fairly up-to-date:
beautyblogwales.com/2017/08/21/best-supermarket-drugstore-products-for-curly-hair-uk-2017/

I'm getting quite excited to try this again with some new products Smile I'm also wondering if pregnancy might make my hair curlier (it was stick straight until puberty hormones kicked in, so maybe pregnancy might kick it up a notch!). Now just have to wait for the morning sickness to pass enough to be able to go out and get a haircut...
