L'Oreal Steampod vs GHD straighteners

Help!

I have a voucher for €50 off for a shop that stocks both. Which should I go for? Has anyone owned both and which do you prefer?

Is there a real difference between all the different GHDs?

I have thin, frizzy, damaged, coloured, curly hair. Will only be straightening it once a week (can't be arsed to get up earlier on a work morning to spend time that I could be asleep on other tasks...)

Price wise the Steampod is about €185 while the GHDs are about €149 for the max styler.

Leaning towards the GHD max styler but I think that is because the shop's website has generic descriptions for the Steampods they sell, and they've got specific descriptions for the different GHDs.

Am bumping my own thread as this voucher is burning a hole in my pocket!!

I would like to see responses to this as well, I have Cloud Nines which are great. Was tempted to order the Steampod but have never tried it. Did have GHDs up until last year but I don't think new GHDs are very good.

satsumasunrise · 30/04/2018 14:12

I have a steampod and wide and original GHDs.

I have extremely thick, long curly hair.

I've been impressed with the steampod it gives a lovely finish and it's quicker too. You say your hair is thin so I should imagine you could straighten your hair pretty quickly with it.

I have blonde curly hair that I straighten often with GHDs. I’ve only had the steam pod used on my hair once by the hairdresser and I love it. I’m def gonna buy it. It leaves my hair feeling so soft and as smooth like glass without any crunchy dried out feeling. The only thing is I don’t think it’s very travel friendly compared to ghds

Actually I had read on another thread or two that the GHDs have gone off the boil a bit, WakeUp you have just reminded me of that.

Cloud Nines are about the same price as the Steampod but the shop for which I have the voucher doesn't stock them - so would have to buy them full price. I think it's the SteamPod for me, I'll report back....

This has reminded me that I wanted the steam pod. I have extremely thick coarse hair. Is it as easy to create waves as the ghds?

ArialAnna · 30/04/2018 15:21

I have both - my very old but trusty ghds, and a new steampod.

Overall I prefer the steampod. I find I get better results on a lower heat (180) which I assume must be better for my hair. Also I find I can do much larger chunks of hair effectively, so it's quicker.

However it took me ages to find unsented distilled water to go in it (eventually I ordered a bottle from Amazon!) Also it would be a faff to travel with. I only use it at home and when I'm away I take my ghds.

Do you have a old pair of straighteners for travel? If so, I'd get a steampod. However if you have nothing and only want to buy one then ghds might be better.

littlewoollypervert · 30/04/2018 15:28

I have a pair of Babyliss straighteners so travel is sorted. I wonder is there an easy way to distil your own water? Must ask DD - she's doing science in college!

I’ve had a steam pod and GHDs in my time. I’ve just had to make the decision about what to buy next - steampod all the way. Doesn’t damage my hair and seems to ‘lock in’ products to give a great shine.

Alienspaceship · 30/04/2018 15:38

I use deionised water - 85p a bottle! Or boiled water from the kettle if I run out.

DuchyDuke · 30/04/2018 15:44

Distilled water is effectively purified / steamed water. You can make it yourself easily via either of the 3 ways below. I prefer the first way and use it for drinking water - I imagine in hard water areas it could ruin steampods.

I ditched my Ghds in favour of cloud 9 because the Ghds were wrecking my hair. Apparently they’ve now reduced the heat of the Ghds since I brought mine three years ago though.

lhastingsmua · 01/05/2018 01:01

My hair is similar to yours. In regards to GHDs, I used to have the original (GHD IV) until they completely failed. They are a great option; high end hair salons that I have visited still use them professionally - they are good, especially if you want to curl your hair too.

I replaced them with GHD Platinum which honestly is shite. The plates are quite thick where you can’t really straighten your roots, so useless for those of us with curly/wavy hair as you can’t easily sort out your kinks. The thick plates make them lacklustre when curling too. My pair broke within the first week (fuse failure) then the replacement pair within the first year! Genuinely the best part of these are the aesthetics - avoid!

I didn’t personally buy the ghd V range, but i have used my friend’s, and I like them over ghd IV personally. I have since bought the new GHD Gold which are thinner than the Platinums and are the new version of the V. Haven’t used them for long but highly recommend! I’m not sure how much better the Max version would be over a normal pair, depends on your curl/texture of course. I think as you have fine hair you’ll be okay with a normal sized pair though

Blanikbalm · 01/05/2018 01:20

I have cloud nines and a steam pod. The steam pod wins hands down for straightening but CNs for waves.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/05/2018 11:40

I have both - the steampod was great when I had long hair but it's quite large/bulky so doesn't work so well now that I've gone for a long bob, so I'm back to my GHDs. The GHDs are easier to curl with - both the regular and the max ones - compared to the steampod.

For long hair that you want to straighten then the steampod is faster and gentler

I have to admit I've never bothered using distilled water; our water is very soft and it seems to have caused no issues.

littlewoollypervert · 08/05/2018 18:22

I have soft water.
I got the steampod.
O.m.g. fab straight hair!

Isn't it great?!

I've owned both and still have a fairly new set of GHDs. I have thick, wavy/curly hair. The Steampod gives me amazingly soft, straight, smooth, FLAT hair. The GHDs get it straight but not always smooth and flat.

The only thing that annoys me about the Steampod is it can't get right to the roots of a really curly bit near my forehead, but I just use the GHDs for that.
