The problem is OP that it's all so subjective.
Not just the colour, but formulation.
For example, I've got 7/8 CT lipsticks but the one I don't have is pillow talk. I do have the lip liner, which is a good universal colour for any lipstick, but if I use it in isolation to cover my lips it's really draining on me.
I think in my case, it's because my natural lip colour is quite a deep rose colour. In CT lipsticks the shade Bond Girl is closest to my natural colour.
So, my suggestion would be to look at your natural lip colour and find a shade that's perhaps a couple of shades deeper than that.
If you have thin lips then don't discount lip pencils.
It might work better for you to use a pencil to shape, define and then fill your lips and then just add a bit of balm on top - dispensing with a lip stick all together.
Frankly your best bet is to go to a dept store and try lots on starting with those closest to your natural lip colour and then trying deeper tones until you find what you like.
