Which lipstick?

TooMinty · 29/04/2018 21:42

Not a big make up wearer but like to make an effort sometimes! However I can never find a lipstick I like. I have naturally very dark brown hair but dyed red tones at the moment, very pale skin and grey/green eyes. My lips are quite thin and I don't like makeup that feels heavy on my skin. Can anyone recommend something? Would splash out for the right one. Thanks!

Benefits they’re real lipstick with built in liner

www.benefitcosmetics.com/uk/en-gb/product/Theyre-Real-double-the-lip?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI55uT6a3g2gIV7bftCh2Z8Q5ZEAAYASAAEgK2lfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Perfect for thinner lips and I suggest “lusty rose” as a lovely colour for your skin tone.

For the first time in my 39 years I have found a lipstick that I absolutely love!
I decided to do some serious research and it paid off...
Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk.
www.charlottetilbury.com/uk/matte-revolution-lipstick-pillowtalk.html
Have never before found a lipstick that doesn’t seem to be wearing me rather than the other way round. Makes me look done and healthy and pretty. Worth every penny.

DCITennison · 29/04/2018 22:00

Have a google, it’s got a big following and if you follow that link there are pictures of it on a range of models so you can get a fair idea of how it would look with your colouring.
I have fair, cool skin tone, green eyes, light brown hair. But I honestly think it’s universally flattering and the formulation is very wearable - first time I’ve been comfortable with a full on lipstick, usually go for a combo of something dabbed on, mostly blotted away then balm.

DarthArts · 29/04/2018 22:26

The problem is OP that it's all so subjective.

Not just the colour, but formulation.

For example, I've got 7/8 CT lipsticks but the one I don't have is pillow talk. I do have the lip liner, which is a good universal colour for any lipstick, but if I use it in isolation to cover my lips it's really draining on me.

I think in my case, it's because my natural lip colour is quite a deep rose colour. In CT lipsticks the shade Bond Girl is closest to my natural colour.

So, my suggestion would be to look at your natural lip colour and find a shade that's perhaps a couple of shades deeper than that.

If you have thin lips then don't discount lip pencils.

It might work better for you to use a pencil to shape, define and then fill your lips and then just add a bit of balm on top - dispensing with a lip stick all together.

Frankly your best bet is to go to a dept store and try lots on starting with those closest to your natural lip colour and then trying deeper tones until you find what you like.

tangledzebra · 29/04/2018 22:28

It depends on what colour you are after? I wear either reds or nudes. I agree pillow talk is a good nude so is bobbi brown blondi pink and mac faux. All quite similar. I did a 15 minute free make up session at bobbi brown - they do lots of different themes but i did the perfect nude and perfect red and basically they apply lots and lots of colours while you sit there. Most counters do something similar. So its def worth booking yourself in.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 29/04/2018 22:29

MAC Everytime. X

Flaskfan · 29/04/2018 22:32

When I came out of my goth eye makeup no lipstick phase, I stsrted with bourjois sheer ones.colour, but not heavy. I like no 17 colour match. I wear lots of red lippie now, but the 17 ones don't make them.stand out. I think you can be braver with thin lips. I have puffy lips (titty lip bottom lip) and can feel like my lips take over.

DavetheCat2001 · 29/04/2018 22:40

MAC here too

CocoaGin · 29/04/2018 22:46

I'd be very careful with anything from Charlotte Tilbury.... no offence to the PP who recommended it. I ordered a job lot of new make up following lots of posts on here and it's Rimmel quality at an extortionate price. The matt lipsticks are hideous on, they are dry and make your mouth feel horrid.... it's a very odd wax. As for the mascara, I looked like my 2 yr old granddaughter had done my eyes.... it was horridly oily and gloopy. I spent well over £150, my young adult DDs both had a go and declared it crap too.... so it went in the bin. I think she has people posting on here recommending it myself, it's so bad I can't believe it has any repeat business Hmm

I like Dior lipsticks, they last well and have a good texture. Or Clinique.

CakeNinja · 29/04/2018 23:06

DCI is that CT lipstick moisturising? I’ve got so many matte lipsticks and they all just suck all the moisture out of my lips like a sponge Sad
I end up patting a tiny bit of lip balm over the top slightly taking the dry edge off a bit but ruining the gorgeous matte look!
I really want to fall in love with a matte lipstick but I don’t want to buy anymore as I’m fed up with the dry prune lips!

CakeNinja · 29/04/2018 23:07

Dammit, just properly read the last post!;

DarthArts · 30/04/2018 12:57

I personally don't find CT lipstick drying. I like them a lot.

I do agree however that the mascaras are awful. They look good when first applied but smudge really badly and have no staying power.

I use L'Oréal paradise mascara at half the price and much better quality in every respect.

Pidlan · 30/04/2018 12:59

My absolute best bargain buy is MUA's Luxe lippy- I have a matte brownish colour and it is far and away the best lipstick I've ever had (I used to buy MAC.) And it's £3.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 30/04/2018 15:53

I would not recommend the benefit lipstick - I had a mini version of it and it was so strongly scented that it gave me a headache and I could taste and smell it for ages, even after I took it off. I'm not one to bin lipsticks after wearing them just once, but I had to get rid of this one.

Some Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks are nice, others are not.
I've found that some really enhance dryness, others wear off very quickly, and that some are decent enough. But they are expensive for what they are.
I have a handful of them and have worn them loads, and I have just ordered another (they are on offer in HoF) so I don't hate them.
I have been really happy with Pillow Talk and The Queen.
I've found Kim KW really patchy and enhances dry bits, Miranda May doesn't last and enhances dry bits and Shanghai Nights is patchy too. Valentine has been okay, but it also doesn't last very well.

Mac are good and the staff working there always seem to have good advice on colours IME. Not too expensive either.
I really like Velvet Teddy (deep tone beige), Faux (mauve pink), Lady Danger (orange red), Patisserie (neutral pink with shimmer) and Relentlessly Red (bright pink).

rightknockered · 30/04/2018 15:56

I like Chanel and Urban Decay for lipsticks. Nars are also good. The best I've ever used are Tom Ford, but £££££, so can't justify the spend.

TooMinty · 30/04/2018 20:49

Thanks everyone! I think I'm looking for a nude tone - I'd love to wear red but don't have the confidence, might work my way up to it. The Pillow Talk shade looks nice but I can tell from the photos on their website that I won't like the texture.

A combination of lip liner and gloss sounds like a possibility and I'll check out MAC/Bobbi Brown/Chanel. I don't like going to make up counters though, always feel under pressure to buy and they always seem to give me a more "made up" look than I want!

No7 Cameo is good for thin lips. Also, L’Oréal Julianne. Just my (thin lipped) opinion 😊

notmypropername · 30/04/2018 21:38

Look at nara dolce vita. It's the most natural looking gorgeous shade I've ever had.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 01/05/2018 18:05

Have you managed to try any of the above, OP?

TooMinty · 01/05/2018 19:54

Not yet, been working. Will maybe pop to the shops on Thursday if my 3 year old is cooperative.

Just another thought but options like the Clinique chubby sticks might be good for you.

Which lipstick?
TooMinty · 02/05/2018 20:55

They look good Darth, thanks. Nice colours but hopefully not too lipsticky texture. Hopefully my local Boots or Debenhams will have them in stock.

wasnotwasweregood · 02/05/2018 23:11

I really like Boots No 7 nude lip liner with Nivea's touch of red lip salve over the top. It gives subtle colour. Otherwise the Bourjois lip glosses last well and don't feel too tacky on the lips.

HistoriaTrixie · 02/05/2018 23:13

NARS Tanganyka is great. It's a sheer, doesn't dry my lips at all. It's on the terra-cotta spectrum but it's not overly bold.

ThreeJoeys · 02/05/2018 23:16

Shiseido has lovely moisturising formula.
