HELP! What to wear in Dubai.

DaisyFayBuchanan · 29/04/2018 16:15

I’m off to Dubai at the end of June for two weeks and I am clueless on what to wear. In regards to what is acceptable and what isn’t.

I dress for my figure (true hourglass) and I definitely don’t want to look frumpy.

Can anyone give guidance on what is acceptable and what isn’t?

Generally anything goes unless you’re going to a government building? In which case it’s best to cover shoulders and knees, other than that no different to anywhere else

Madbengalmum · 29/04/2018 16:19

You are fine as you would be in europe in the tourist areas. Just cover arms and shoulders, knees if you visiting religious sites or more business oriented areas.

BalloonFlowers · 29/04/2018 16:30

You will see people in shorts and tank tops.
Personally, I cover knees and shoulders - as much to lessen sunscreen requirements as anything.
Are you there before about 17 June? I'd be more careful during Ramadan and Eid. And more covered if you are in government offices or a mosque.

PetulantPolecat · 29/04/2018 16:31

Layers. It will be boiling outside and freezing air con blasting everywhere indoors.

Mercurial123 · 29/04/2018 17:04

I always cover shoulders and knees to be respectful. You might not notice disapproval from the locals but you will be judged.

expatmigrant · 29/04/2018 17:15

It will be high 40s outside so lots of cotton stuff for outside, bearing in mind shoulders and knees should be covered. It will be much cooler inside buildings so pashminas, cardigans or long sleeved tops.

Bratsandtwats · 29/04/2018 17:35

Make sure your armpits are covered too.

VileyRose · 29/04/2018 18:12

Maxi dress + pashmina

DaisyFayBuchanan · 29/04/2018 18:18

I wear midi length dresses normally so knees isn’t a problem. What about chest?

Cover up chest too. Which area will you be in? If it's an expat heavy area don't worry too much; they follow different rules to everywhere else....

Ginorchoc · 29/04/2018 18:21

As others have said Pashminas are useful

DaisyFayBuchanan · 29/04/2018 18:28

We are staying at the Atlantis?

I have put pashmina on my list.

So no low cut dress/tops at all? I’m not saying I will have my boobs out but I wear lower necked clothes as they’re more flattering as my boobs are on the big side.

When I was in Dubai on holiday visiting a friend anything went, to be honest. I think if you were going for work you might need to be more careful but i wore what I would on a European break.

JoandMax · 29/04/2018 18:37

Low cut tops are fine! At somewhere like the Atlantis it’s all for tourists so honestly you’ll be fine. Take a pashmina incase you go out anywhere and want to cover your shoulders but for in the hotel nothing is needed

Scabetty · 29/04/2018 18:37

I was there at Christmas. Low cut tops are fine. I wore jeans and cami tops with a kimono to cover shoulders but some people were less covered and some more. I just treated it like I would any City.

OCSockOrphanage · 29/04/2018 18:51

Dubai is an international city, and people wear normal city clothes. If you are in a mall, dress for shopping, not the beach. At the hotel pool, any normal swimwear is fine. At restaurants, dress for the temperature and have an extra layer handy because the AC is fierce; your DP should know that shorts/flipflops are not acceptable in many restaurants, especially smart ones. For sightseeing, thin trousers, a loose skirt and long sleeves will not offend anyone. Mosques will usually provide an abaya.

loveulotslikejellytots · 29/04/2018 18:56

We've stayed at the Atlantis before and going again in June. It's the same as any other hotel, (so the water park and pools you are fine in usual swimwear) the only difference is that you cannot wear swimwear only around the hotel. So no walking around inside with just a swimsuit, this goes for men too. Tops on indoors. Around the hotels and tourist areas (including the malls) shorts, dresses etc are all fine. Shoulders should be covered and probably knees. If you are going to any religious sites or the old town I'd go more conservative, linen trousers maybe with arms covered too.
