Funky prom dress for DD17 which you can then go clubbing in

DDs prom is after A levels. They will go as a big group of friends (as lots of boyfriends etc are from other schools and can't come).

DD normally dresses like a lot of the girls here, slimline joggers (with stripes), huge sweatshirts or jumpers and trainers - quite street. But she has a girly side and would like to look good for the prom - in a slimline sophisticated dress - no frills, not too many sparkles or flowers. But though she likes lots of long dresses she wants to go clubbing after so that wont work.

What shops would be best? She has a lovely figure - with a nipped in waist, not huge boobs, size 10 -12. She has a lot of auburn hair - when straightened is nearly waist length and unusually honey coloured skin for a red head. She doesn't mind clashy colours and looking funky (she's going to art school).

But we would prefer to try on rather than order online. Any tips for good shops - In London so there are a few to choose from? I'm wondering whether she might go in heels and change into trainers to go clubbing.

would something like this work?

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 29/04/2018 11:07

I'm not sure MN style and beauty is your best bet for getting advice on this, as it's more Boden, Hush, Joules stuff here!

I would say Topshop probably sounds a good bet, the big one in Oxford Circus has lots of independent brand concessions etc doesn't it? (It's so long since I have been 😭)

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 11:09

DD got a lovely short Lipsey dress from Next in the sales. Generally the girls don't wear long dresses for post A level prom.

NapQueen · 29/04/2018 11:09

Ellen presumably a large number of MNers have teen dds so will have some idea of shops/styles etc to suggest?

Bouledeneige · 29/04/2018 11:11

Napqueen - thats lovely. I will show her.

Ellen - I know, thats why I'm stuck! We will go into town later and check out Topshop. She wants to go to Selfridges as its huge but I think too expensive and grown up.

Lipsy!

Hobbes8 · 29/04/2018 11:30

I think house of Fraser would be better than Selfridges for young funky stuff. It's been a while, but the basement of the oxford st branch used to have lots of younger ranges. Closer to TopShop too.

Bouledeneige · 29/04/2018 11:42

Ah yes Lipsy. I might think about going to Westfield instead - they have a Lipsy there i think.

There seems to be a wide variety on this side, from long frou frou to ultra chic short.

If she wants a long dress and then to go on clubbing would she consider a two piece and then she could swap the skirt for short or a shorter skirt?

Bouledeneige · 29/04/2018 12:17

Oh thats a cute site thanks. 2 piece is a good idea!

Next sell Lipsy stuff

MrsSnitch · 29/04/2018 12:30

ASOS - so much choice and free returns means you can order a whole load and try them on at leisure

Groovee · 29/04/2018 12:31

Did got her prom dress from Lipsy.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/04/2018 19:32

DD is in Yr11 (so a couple of years younger) she insists that her year are all long dresses , strappy sandles (heeled) and sparkle Grin

She got her dress from 'Little Mistress' a lot of weddingy and bridesmaidy types but some nice evening dresses

BangingOn · 29/04/2018 19:36

Selfridges might not be a bad idea, I frequent the Birmingham store and they have a good mix of high street and designer. Maybe the All Saints concession would be worth checking out?

LoniceraJaponica · 29/04/2018 19:49

Yes, a lot of year 11s wear long dresses, but by year 13 they tend to be short. DD wore a short dress to her year 11 prom, and has worn it since. Most of the others will never wear their dresses again.

This is what DD is wearing this year.

Bouledeneige · 30/04/2018 00:30

Unsuccessful trip to Westfield. Tried Lipsy and quite a lot of other places. Only one thing she quite liked was at Karen Millen. An off the shoulder red dress... It would look better shortened though.

Its year 13 so she will go on to club in town - probably most of the night. A long dress will not work - and she wants to be clubby cool. I have no idea. Latest thought was a jumpsuit.

Has she looked at Chi Chi?

emmskie03 · 30/04/2018 15:52

I'd have a look in the Next Clearance section to see if there are any Lipsy dresses be she likes in there!

Bouledeneige · 02/05/2018 07:51

Thanks for your suggestions - we found something online in Metisu. The one she chose is made of stretchy material which should be good for the dance floor!
