Anyone else HATE summer dressing?

When the weather turns warmer I always feel like I totally loose my stride outfit wise. I think the crux of the problem is that I have GIANT thighs so shorts just look absolutely hideous on me - I have tried a million pairs and never found any that I am 100% happy with.

So all those pair shaped ladies out there - what are your summer staples?

I'm good with a dress but skirts / dresses just aren't always practical.

When it warmed up the other week I noticed that more or less every man was wearing below knee cargo shorts and loose fitting t shirts or cotton shirts. Shoes were trainers/flip flops/deck shoes.
All different body types and they all looked covered and comfortable. I’ve decide to take a leaf out of their books this year and am going to wear slightly cropped above ankle thin trousers, loose thin tees in plain colours, loose thin shirts with vest underneath and birkies or Toms.

Whitesea · 29/04/2018 09:32

I think jeans look a bit silly when the weather is hot, sort of like wearing a knit jumper in summer or having a coat on when everyone else is wearing a tshirt.

LunaTheCat · 29/04/2018 09:34

I love summer dressing! By no means small but I feel so much lighter in lighter clothes. I find dresses more flattering than separates which tend to cut you in half. Bring on summer, - sand let’s, cotton scarves, cotton cardigans....

Floisme · 29/04/2018 09:56

Ankle length cotton trousers and a l/s shirt for me. I like to cover up when it's hot - it feels far more comfortable.

MockneyReject · 29/04/2018 09:59

I was going to start this thread.
Nothing fits me, nothing I like suits me. Not that I like much, anyway.

I also own nor like any footwear other than boots and trainers.

I've sweltered through every summer of my adult life in jeans and trainers. Until last year when I lost lots of weight through stress. I could wear anything. Of course, I looked old and haggard. So, now I'm back to 'normal for me' and the prospect of another miserable summer looms.

What do people mean by well fitting t-shirts? I'm pretty sure I've never had one! I have a long torso and the muffin top pushes down my jeans as it is.

Would clogs be an admission of having given up caring? (I absolutely can't have my toes out)

endthefarts · 29/04/2018 10:50

I hate summer clothes. I’m a pale skinned, size 12-14 hourglass. Not huge but big enough that nothing drapes nicely and anything floaty makes me look a lot bigger than I am. My pale legs (with sore skin) look terrible exposed and I loathe all summer shoes. I also dislike having my arms out.

ladymarian · 29/04/2018 10:54

Me too! I feel your pain. I'm short with awful legs (short fat and ugly) so that means that nothing looks good in me in summer. I also don't tan and fake tan simply does not work on me unless I fancy looking like an oompa loompa! (I don't)
I tend to stick to leggings (occasionally cropped ones) and tunic tops. I'm actually going abroad this summer for the first time in years so I'm having to embrace summer clothes. I bought some shorts from Primark which don't look too hideous so there is hope. They're navy blue and knee length. They're called city shorts. Roll on autumn....

IJustLostTheGame · 29/04/2018 11:01

Shoes are the one thing I don't find difficult; 3 pairs of flat espadrilles from Primark later and I'm done.

Appuskidu · 29/04/2018 11:10

I don’t even own a pair of shorts-I think they look awful on me (and most people over a size 14).

I love summer though!

I wear knee length denim/combat/A-line skirts and sleeveless t-shirts or A-line knee length dresses. I have several of the linen blend ones from next. I find them v cool and comfortable and wear them with Birkenstocks, Fly sandals or flip flops.

Whitesea · 29/04/2018 11:45

Ladymarian your post made me shake my head. Please please don’t call yourself those names. My little daughter already calls herself ugly and it makes me want to cry.

I am short and could do with losing weight and find wide leg trousers/midi skirt/v neck tops work best.

Re fake tan if you want to use it (I stopped a few years ago), St Tropez lotion, although pricey, is really good foll naturally paler skin. You will have to wash your bedsheets after using though.

Ouch456 · 29/04/2018 11:52

My thighs and bum are also my biggest part, I’m a size 14 on the bottom and a 10/12 on top. I absolutely love fatface flippy shorts they sit on my waist nicely but are baggy around the bum and thighs and also aren’t ridiculously short. I have probably explained them badly but I encourage any fellow pear shapes to go try a pair on (then buy last years patterns on eBay for half the price)

Elbow length cotton tops and knee length skirts (I like tube skirt in bamboo/jersey) flatter most. Find some flat sandals that are comfy and youre set

ppeatfruit · 29/04/2018 14:10

I feel lucky in that I don't have problems with my figure but it's the blee din' ironing! If I went posh like Dairy and wore long linen dresses, I'd have to spend hot hours ironing them!

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 29/04/2018 14:44

I hate it too. I always feel I’ve nithing to wear and should have gone on a diet. It’s the same, every year.

@Dairyisclosed... Where do you get your linen dresses from?

Fintress · 29/04/2018 14:56

I live in Scotland. What is “summer”?!

I concur. It's honestly something I don't have to worry about as we rarely get the weather to go out in shorts. The only people you see regularly in shorts where I live is the postie! It is positively Baltic here today.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/04/2018 15:28

I, too, dislike summer. As I age, I can't stand feeling hot, bothered and sweaty (not even into menopause yet although over 50 so I'm dreading that). I'm also fairly tall, broad shouldered and so I don't suit girly, floaty things and usually live in jeans.

I like the look of some of the clothes on the website www.forgottentribes.com/ Nice harem pants, some jumpsuits and culottes type things. Have never ordered from there before but most of the models pictured seem to be approx 5' 4" so might suit a lot of you (but will probably be cropped on me!)

DairyisClosed · 29/04/2018 15:32

@auntyjacks they are actually really hard to find if you don't want to look like a sack. I have one really nice one from fenn Wright Mason. My favourite one I got in an op so in oasis as a teenager but sadly it had no label.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 29/04/2018 15:35

I hate it too. I have a massive birth mark on the back of my leg that people always point out and also varicose veins. And this year, after having lost two stones, I now have wrinkly and crepey upper arms too [cries]

Branleuse · 29/04/2018 15:49

I'm pear shaped/hourglass with hefty thighs.
All summer I wear dresses just above the knees or short summer dresses with cropped leggings and sandals.

Snog · 29/04/2018 16:17

I wear dresses and sandals, and use body glide so I don't get chub rub. So easy!
Linen cardigan if it's cooler.

ladymarian · 29/04/2018 18:44

Whitesea - I was meaning my legs are short fat and ugly! 😁

Dandellion · 29/04/2018 18:59

I'm a size 12 so not overweight but have big boobs and a c-section overhang, but have good legs and a trim bum. I cannot find flattering tops that don't make me look matronly, or that don't cling to my flabby tummy. I'd love to wear summer dresses, but for something to cover my boobs and hide my tummy just looks like a maternity smock

Whitesea · 29/04/2018 19:00

Lady Sorry! Mine are too. I have really desperate legs. I have a problem finding knee boots I can squash ‘me into without tearing the zips!

Whitesea · 29/04/2018 19:01

*them not me! Obv I would not try to squash my whole self into a pair of boots!
