Every foundation sticking to dry bits.

Hi everyone,

I exfoliate, moisturise and still my foundation is sticking to dry bits of my face. I don't know what else I can do. I've tried a few foundations L'Oréal, rimmel, maybelline and also bourjois cc cream. I've also been drinking 2L of water a day.

Have you thought about higher end makeup? I find Lancôme really good for avoiding this. Also are you using a primer before you put your foundation on?

IMissGin · 27/04/2018 11:36

Probably need to look at changing exfoliant/moisturiser- what are you using?

StayingAtTamaras · 27/04/2018 11:38

I had the same problem and discovered it wasn't the foundation but the skin care, I started using La Roche Posay toner and moisturiser and also cut out using a primer as I found that was actually drying out my skin and now I get a more dewy look and no more dry bits!

theunsure · 27/04/2018 11:40

I get this. It is so annoying!

I had to change my moisturiser - I now use Eucerin daily which I don't like as much as my previous product but it has sorted the dry bits. And then once a week I have to slather my face in pure shea butter when I go to bed. Which makes it greasy and then I get a couple of spots sometimes, but the flake goes.

No make up product will sort it sadly, I have tried absolutely everything. I still get an issue either side of my nose, it is a type of non itchy eczema apparently.

MsAtomicBomb · 27/04/2018 11:42

Agree with others, it sounds more like a problem with skincare than a problem with foundation. What products are you using?

shakenandangry · 27/04/2018 11:45

It doesn’t sound like a makeup problem, but a skincare one. You need to focus on moving your skin towards a normal skintype, so layering serums (eg hylauronic acid) and a more emollient moisturiser. Hydrating face masks, using a very gentle cleanser, removing all harsh products from your routine - especially your exfoliator! These products don’t have to be expensive either, you can try The Ordinary or use Aquaphor etc

I’m not sure how often you exfoliate, but regular exfoliation will actually just dry out your skin more. It isn’t removing your dead, dry skin as you think but increasing yoir sensitivity and irritating your dry patches. Your dry patches won’t just go away after being exfoliated off, they will just feel raw and your fresh skin that will grow in will just be dry too. You need a gentle cleanser...even just using water will help your skin more than anything harsh

It’s better to just try a routine for dry/sensitive for a month and recover your skin and your moisturiser barrier. This will help you much more than a new foundation. In terms of makeup, a primer can help the makeup stick to your face more. I enjoy: armani luminous silk, too faced born this way, mufe ultra hd, nars all day luminous etc etc. My point is, with a better skincare routine you can essentially use whatever foundation you want

Tp4mybung · 27/04/2018 11:46

I had this problem for years, every foundation I tried would look terrible to the point of being unwearable. I use a Clinique foundation & a blender sponge now with no issues - I went back and bought 5 bottles after I first used it. I also use Maybelline Baby Face primer - it's cheap and gives my dry face a really good base. Judging by the reviews it's not for everyone, and people find it greasy, but I'd tried more expensive ones to no avail at all.

This stuff, if you want to give it a try. It's life changing wearing foundation without a flaky face!
And here's the primer

SophieGiroux · 27/04/2018 11:48

Have you tried using a product with aha/bha in to get rid of the flakiness? Alpha H liquid gold or Pixi toner is really good

Tp4mybung · 27/04/2018 11:50

If you can find this stuff anywhere (I'm starting to think they've stopped making it) it's absolutely bloody brilliant. My skins never felt so good.

I've had a neurotic skin care routine for years, nothing has ever made a difference as much as the aforementioned products!

sweetiehuni · 27/04/2018 12:02

Thanks for all your replies.

I'm currently using Liz Earle cleanse and polish with a flannel.
Pixi glow tonic.
Kheils ultra facial cream.

Pregnant at the moment so have to be careful with what I'm using.
Tp4mybung thank you, I'm going to check out that water pack and the Clinique foundation sounds promising.

I could not get on with the PixiGlow. It dried my skin, to parchment. Maybe stop “overdoing” exfoliating? I think I was definitely overworking my skin and the simpler my skin care got, the better it felt and looked.

I now use a Foreo Luna for sensitive skin, a couple of times a week.

Aveeno Cream (the one with Colloidal Oats) at night, in my face, has helped enormously.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/04/2018 12:46

You are exfoliating quite a lot, so it’s not that.

Can you try a hyaluronic serum under the moustache?

Or change your application method. I use My fingers and I find the foundation applies better.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/04/2018 12:47

Or maybe it’s the exfoliating, you might be overdoing it.

Stop one of the two and see what happens.

goose1964 · 27/04/2018 12:52

If you're pregnant it could be messing with your skin. It could be with using a tinted moisturiser rather than a foundation

sweetiehuni · 27/04/2018 13:09

Can you try a hyaluronic serum under the moustache?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Moisturiser do you mean? I plucked my moustache this morning 😂😂😂😂 xx

sweetiehuni · 27/04/2018 13:10

Yeah I might lose the pixi glow tonic and see what happens.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 27/04/2018 13:11

Well, I suppose it won’t hurt....

I have the same issue! The Clinique "even better glow" foundation is good, the "super moisture" was even better - but they discontinued it 😫 I haven't gotten over that yet - it was perfect for me. Still on a quest to find an equal.

I find using Rosehip oil before a moisturising primer helps, I also spritz with a setting spray afterwards and through the day if my skin is feeling dry.

uberqueen · 27/04/2018 20:47

I have flaky skin too and as much as I'd love to save money on foundation , no amount of exfoliating and moisturising preps my skin well enough for drugstore foundations . The flakes will still show. I now use Lancôme foundation and find that very little prepping and ski care obsessing is needed . I don't even need to exfoliate before hand anymore . Lancôme and a beauty blender sponge make everything glide on really easily .

LoveInTokyo · 28/04/2018 09:12

Try some facial oil. I have used argan oil from Neal’s yard before, which definitely helped sort out dry patches.

I think it was about £20 for a bottle but I just massaged a few drops into my skin at night and a little went a long way.

BagelGoesWalking · 28/04/2018 10:22

Adding a hydrating toner - a good one - will help so much. It's such a simple thing to do but can make an amazing difference.

Popular ones are Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, Klairs Supple Preparation toner, Etude House Soon Jung toner. All on eBay from Korean sellers or from Uk stockists like Beauty and Seoul or Skinholic.

LtheWife · 28/04/2018 13:26

If a change in skincare doesn't help (it should though), try The Ordinary High Spreadability Fluid Primer. I don't normally get on with silicone based primers (and really dislike the high adherence version), but the tiniest amount of the high spreadability primer swiped over and flaky bits is the only thing that stops foundation from sticking to my dryer patches (my skin is trying to get used to prescription retinoids).
