I’ve just bought a home ombré kit

And I don’t know if I dare try it. Good idea or bad idea? I have a bob that I usually wear pretty messy, so could hide any dodgy lines, but also means I can’t chop the ends off. Has anyone used one? Is there a reason why it’s so pricey at the salon Grin

And I’m aware they might not be the height of fashion anymore

Oh I want to know how it goes! My hair is really long from mat leave and I was thinking of doing something with the ends before eventually chopping.

formerbabe · 26/04/2018 20:32

I'm tempted by these kits...but too scared to try. Let us know if it works out if you do try it!

Floopbloop · 26/04/2018 20:33

The reason it's so expensive in the salon is it takes ages to place the colout and blend it nicely, not something you can do at home on your own hair really.

IHateToCashew · 26/04/2018 20:34

Awful idea.

My mum tried one on hers and managed to turn the whole thing orange. She summoned me to help her fix it.

I made it oranger somehow Blush

Loving that the people who want me to do it have an ulterior motive! Mumsnet’s home ombré guinea pig Grin

Iv done it on my own hair before and it worked out good! I have a bob too. There's YouTube videos on how to do it, just give a couple a watch for the tricks on how to get it looking natural and buy some of that silver shampoo Smile

samewitches · 26/04/2018 21:06

No, don't! If you can't cut it you could end up with a disaster you need to dye over. Do you have someone to do it for you? You need the line to be blended and not straight. And do a patch test to see how the colour will come out all the way down. In short, yes, there is a very good reason it costs so much at a salon, it's a very difficult colour to pull off!

CreativeMumma · 26/04/2018 21:15

i've done it loads, like someone else said watch some youtube vids on how to do it. its only hair, it will grow if you hate it or you can dye over it.

you will need to tone it so it goes a nice colour rather than brassy and wash with purple shampoo.

Ds didn’t fall asleep until stupidly late, then I was too tired to try. I think I might take it back and save up for a proper one. Do you think someone at a college salon would do it ok as they’d be supervised?

Hairdressers model nights/local college/groupon offer. Home dye is the devil's own invention.
