'Funky not feminine' - can anyone help dd dress for prom . . .?

She has decided that she does want to go - so now needs an outfit Grin Criteria as above - she says no dresses, no jumpsuits, colours fine but needs to be wearable with oxblood DMs. She's 5 foot, and very slim - size 6 or 8 at a stretch I guess.

Suggestions would be very, very welcome (can you guess she also hates shopping . . .)

How about this steam punk black Victorian lace sleeveless top with some skinny black trousers - would look great with the oxblood DMs and can wear a jacket over or not (probably won't keep a jacket on anyway)

Would she consider something a little goth?

Sadik · 26/04/2018 21:44

Rave-y rather that steampunk/goth probably more her end of the scale (possibly because I'm rather partial to a bit of steampunk myself Blush) - her usual 'dressed up' outfit is a Cyberdog hoodie / cropped fitted t-shirt / levis

There's this jacket, but I don't know if it's too long?

Skinny tartan looks ace with DMs. Could go full suit or just trousers with a block colour top.

There's often some good Vivienne Westwood bargains to be found on Ebay that might appeal.

IJustNeedAUserName · 27/04/2018 14:19

Off topic but thanks to Salsamad for the katesclothing links... I just bought the victorian bouse and a frock coat :-)

Frankiewears · 27/04/2018 18:31

Would she go for a velvet dress worn like a long top with skinnies and docs? This sort of thing?

Sorry not up to date with what’s fashionable in the shops but just offering style inspiration - has your DD seen the BBC programme A Stitch In Time? The Historian/presenter Amber Butchart has amazing style and iirc she often wore slim fitting suits/trousers waistcoat combo. Or has she thought about tailored shorts with tights, shirt and tux jacket?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/04/2018 18:50

DD2 wore a tux suit with a plain white shirt and a bow tie. Looked bloody brilliant, if I may say so myself. She got it in Oasis, iirc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/04/2018 18:53

I think jumpsuits will probably be as 'girly' as a dress in the eyes of a dress-hating teen.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/04/2018 18:57

Black jacket
Very funky shirt

Sadik · 27/04/2018 20:26

You are exactly right re. the jumpsuit Remus. The swan shirt is fabulous, might be exactly the thing with the tux we found in Zara.

Try blue banana clothing or rag and bone although most of my dd's clothes are now my steam punk cast offs 🤔 failing that a trip to Camden will sort her out, that's where my prom tux was bought ( I was banned entry for not wearing a dress so went the pub )

Sadik · 27/04/2018 21:26

The swan shirt is getting a definite thumbs up (as is your username, Remus Grin )

A tux would look great, but she'll need a petite fitting one or alterations. I'm that height and suits of any type can be a bit of a bugger and look a bit tent-like. The fit is everything.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/04/2018 21:39

Excellent news on both counts, Sadik!
