My hair is the BANE of my life

I have ridiculously thick hair. I know people say they have really thick hair, but then they are able to put it up or go to the gym and wash it afterwards (without it taking over an hour) so clearly they don't have hair as shit as mine.

I'm mid 40s, have had children etc and it just hasn't gotten any thinner so I think I'm stuck with it. It really does control my life. The only style (if I can call it that) I can wear it is just past my shoulders otherwise it puffs out and I look like someone from Dynasty. With layers I end up with a bad 90s "Rachel" look. I have to straighten it otherwise I look like Tina Turner - none of these looks are what I'm after Hmm It has a real curl/frizz to it, but I can't put product in and leave it to dry naturally because there's so bloody much of it, it would still be wet 10 hours later. I work full time in a professional environment so I want to look good and right now the only way I can do that is to wear it straight. This means that things like doing a workout or going for a swim has to have an hour and half added onto it. Even when I do go through the palaver of washing/drying/straightening it still doesn't look ok until the next day - there's absolutely no way I could do that and go out that night for example, I'd always have to do my hair the day before any event.

Sorry this is so long (and I know it's not important in the great scheme of things and other people have real problems to deal with) but it just gets me so down and I've yet to meet a hairdresser who knows how to handle my hair. In fact most of them have a go and then realise just how thick it is and want to run a mile. Is there anyone else who genuinely has hair as thick as mine and has been able to get it to look good without having to devote so much time and mental energy to it??

I know what you mean but I kind of like that my hair isn't the same as everyone else's . People always comment on it and it kind of makes me feel special . Give it a try you may like it 🤗

MrsPatmore · 25/04/2018 18:31

Are you in or near a main city? Sometimes, hairdressers with experience of Afro hair can style thick, curly European hair well. I think it's crucial to have the right cut too and for that, you'd need to pay a lot. I feel your pain re; gym/swim type activities / it takes me an hour afterwards to do mine too (although I wear a very tight swim cap now!

Mulberrysilk · 25/04/2018 18:34

Do the highlights not make it worse? I'd have thought that from a texture point of view you'd be better off sticking with a semi.

HuckfromScandal · 25/04/2018 18:37

I’d get an undercut -
My hair is super super thick but straight -
So an undercut means it hangs better,
Dries quicker.
I wash it less often and,
I only tie it up for the gym or running.

pigpoglet · 25/04/2018 18:52

My freind has an undercut once but it doesn't look very professional when it's up 😬😬

Youcantflosstomonkeywrench · 25/04/2018 19:12

I also came on to suggest an under cut. It had made a huge difference to my hair, it cuts the washing and drying time and feels much cooler in summer.

I nearly never wear it up anyway.

FuturePerfect · 25/04/2018 19:26

My hair is similar. Naturally twists into curls/ringlets/dreadlocks if I leave it wet, and would take all day to dry and would then be ENORMOUS and fluffy on top.

I straighten it each time I wash (only 1-2 times a week, which is a plus).

My hairdresser recently used a Dyson hairdryer on it, and it was amazing. No need for straighteners, it dried much more quickly, and was left with none of that static volume I usually get when I blow-dry it.

Perhaps get yourself to a hairdresser who has a Dyson and try it out before you shell out ££££ to buy one though!

GinandGingerBeer · 25/04/2018 19:59

You can buy the Brazilian Hair kits on amazon op. It's a bit of a faff to do, and you might need a friend to help but it's much cheaper.
The new Babyliss styling brush might be good for you for the days you've not washed it. It's basically a big barrelled brush which rotates But gets as hot as GHDs.
(It's different to the babyliss big Hair which would take you about 3 years to dry your hair Grin)

I have thick wavy hair, takes 12 hrs to dry, frizzy in any humidity. I usually blow dry straight to about 80% dry, put more oil and frizz ease through it, coil it up in messy big bunches, sleep. If I'm lucky it's wavy without frizz when I wake up.

And like you op I plan my life around hair washing!
I spent years looking for something to tame it. Nothing has worked except having a hairdresser straighten it or put it in super big rollers. For me it's the not knowing and inconsistent way in which it behaves.

My hair is the BANE of my life
MiniTheMinx · 25/04/2018 20:27

Oh, and no I haven't been to Swansea 😀

macnab · 25/04/2018 20:43

Thanks everyone. I definitely don't want an undercut. I can't give up my highlights, I live being blonde! Basically I want my hair to look like how I imagine it in my head, regardless of my hair type and face shape - I'm completely reasonable and realistic Grin

I did wonder about the dyson hairdryer, must put that on my Christmas list!

Once I get it cut I will treat myself to the brazilian treatment and hopefully it will be easier to manage.

I know I've a lot to be grateful for, my hair looks lovely most of the time, it's just the amount of time/effort/planning that goes into getting it that way that bothers me. I'd love to be low maintenance!

My hair used to be the bain of my life it was frizzy, thick, wavy and just out of control but I got a Keratin treatment done and it's changed my life!
I now have shiny, sleek, manageable hair.
It pretty pricey, mine was £190 and it lasts about 3-4 months depending on how often you wash it, but its so so worth it I promise

specialsubject · 25/04/2018 22:11

no cutting, no thinning. wella straight or loreal xtenso. lasts a year if properly done. five mins to straighten if needed.

(swish...) ex frizzball here.

TheLastNigel · 26/04/2018 08:12

My hair is similar to yours op...the only solution for me has been Braziliana keratin treatments. Spendy but worth it.

TheLastNigel · 26/04/2018 08:13

I was a bit disappointed with my Dyson dryer tbh. It does dry my hair a bit quicker but not worth it for the money I don't think...

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 26/04/2018 08:28

I sympathise. My hair is very thick and quite curly and takes a good couple of hours to wash, dry and straighten. The problem being that it does look good after all that.

I tried the curly look once. Unfortunately it was a windy walk to work. When I got there, a colleague asked If everything was alright? in a very concerned tone. Sad

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 26/04/2018 08:32

..she clearly thought I'd slept under a bush all night after being evicted or something Grin

It sounds as though a Brazilian blow dry is the only answer to having straight hair without the hard work. I have heard it is quite damaging for the hair though so maybe a once or twice yearly treat?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 26/04/2018 08:46

mini that sounds like hard work but your hair does look beautiful in that picture.

schnubbins · 26/04/2018 08:49

Please do not let anyone near you with a razor or any of this thinning carry on.My hairdresser thought it was a good idea last year and 'thinned' my hair out.All it has been since is a frizzy mess even though I used bottles and bottles of conditioner.I have got thick wavy hair and have also started hating having to wash it as the styling takes so long since the thinning out episode.

MiniTheMinx · 26/04/2018 09:02

Slept under a bush earlynineties Grin

My hairdresser recommended the Brazilian blow-dry. I'm too nervous to try it. I might have a look at the Dyson hairdryer. Please let us know how you get on with the Brazilian treatment macnab

I don't think I'd risk thinning it out. I can imagine being left with a lot of more wispy frizz, which I think can look worse. But every hairdresser has recommended this.

Aridane · 26/04/2018 09:07

Brazilian blow dry - plenty of places have cheap promotional offers

cakeandteajustforme · 26/04/2018 10:12

Another one recommending trying a brazilian blow dry. I don't have hick hair but I do have frizz/curls and it is AMAZING. It just dries... straight! Whether air or blowdried it is so much easier and more consistent. I'm in a corporate environment and it saves me HOURS each week, as I don't need to even get the straighteners out, a quick blow dry is enough.
You can get midweek deals on groupon/treatwell etc so it'll cost around £100 for 3/4 months effectiveness, but I'd get someone to do it the first time so you can see how it's done then get the amazon kits if you like it to spread the cost.
Honestly, just go try it before you do anything drastic.

DuchyDuke · 26/04/2018 10:39

Try an Indian beautician / hair dresser. They’ll be used to thick Euro hair (which is basically what most Indian hair is). There are some amazing hot oil treatments etc that can be done.

macnab · 26/04/2018 11:53

Well it seems like I'll have to get another mortgage shell out for the proper brazilian treatment if I want to keep a 'sleek' look. Or else be brave and try to go natural. I'm leaning towards the fake/sleek look because I'm just not good with change in general and I dread the reaction if I suddenly showed my frizz to the world!!

a colleague asked If everything was alright? in a very concerned tone Grin Grin yes, that is the sort of reaction I'm worried about!

Ollivander84 your hair is beautiful but I'm not certain my hair would look like that and as I understand it the CG method takes a while to settle into and that's what puts me off - I want instant results!!

I'm starting to realise that actually my problem lies more in my expectations than my hair. Clearly I'm a bit too vain for my own good Hmm
